A lightweight showdown between UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson and Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez is being targeted for the UFC’s seventh show on the Fox network. The bout will serve as the evening’s main event. MMAFighting first reported the story.
The bout will serve as the first bout for both men on their newly signed contracts.
Henderson last appeared at UFC on Fox 5, where he dominated Melendez’s teammate Nate Diaz for five rounds. The “2012 MMAFrenzy Fighter of the Year” has now won six straight bouts since dropping a fight to Anthony Pettis at the WEC’s final card in 2010.
Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez will come into April’s bout with a seven-fight win-streak of his own. “El Nino” was originally supposed to face Pat Healy at Strikeforce’s finale this past weekend but had to bow out due to a lingering shoulder issue that scrapped their first planned meeting last fall. The championship bout will mark a sizable challenge for the Caesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu product’s UFC debut.
The UFC will target the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California for their seventh foray on the Fox network. The card will take place Saturday April 20.

Bendo gonna whoop that as$!!!
I have never thought of Melendez as an elite fighter, his level of opponents have IMO never been that good other than barely beating Guida & a snore fest with Aoki.
Yup. I think Gil is game enough to hang around for most of the fight, if not go the distance, but I see him getting thoroughly dominated and never posing any threat to Benson.
Melendez has a nice run but he simply doesn’t have the resume to earn this fight. Bendo by decimation in every facet.
CEASAR GRACIE JIU JITSU!
