TUF 16 – Episode 11 Recap

“The Ultimate Fighter: Team Carwin vs. Team Nelson” returned to action tonight on FX. This week marked the final two quarterfinals of the season with Team Nelson’s Joey Rivera facing teammate Jon Manley and Team Carwin’s Mike Ricci facing Team Nelson’s Michael Hill “TUF 16″will air every Friday night until the live finale on December 15 as 16 welterweights vie to become “The Ultimate Fighter.” SPOILERS BELOW

Very little introduction this week as we are quickly to the fight fight between Team Nelson teammates Joey Rivera and Jon Manley.

Joey Rivera vs. Jon Manley

  • R1 – Herb Dean is ref. Manley playing outside and looking for spots. Manley with a takedown attempt from too far away. Rivera is blocking and controlling wrists. Knees by Manley as he switches to a single. Rivera looks for a front choke but Manley defends. Manley sweeps Riveras legs and he’s down. Manley with a nice pass to side control. Rivera locks the body and sits up along the cage but has nothing. Rivera locks up an odd choke but first doesn’t have it. Manley recovers but ends up in a triangle briefly but passes to side control. More punches by Manley. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Manley.
  • R2- Good combo by Manley. Slow kicks by Rivera. Manley tries a takedown and expends a lot of energy. Rivera just blocking here. Manley finally gets him down and passes to side control. Rivera trying an inverted triangle but Manley works out and gets mount. Manley now has riveras backs and just starts throwing punches. MMAFrenzy has it 20-18 Manley.
  • Jon Manley def. Joey Rivera by majority decision (20-18,20-18,19-19)

UFC President Dana White and Nelson are disappointed by performances of both fighters. Manley says he is disappointed too but said it was because Rivera outstruck him in practice.

Back at the house, Hill and Ricci’s tension keeps growing, Ricci says he’s worried about Hill messing with his food food. Hill is angry with Ricci because he still believes Ricci betrayed him. Short training montage with Ricci talking about avoiding Hill’s power. Hill, who shockingly has a shirt on in training, talks about being the dirtier fighter in order to get the win.

Michael Hill vs. Mike Ricci

  • R1 – Rosenthal in the cage. Ricci is more aggressive early and landing cleaner early. Hill looking for power shots here and lands a solid leg kick. Combo by Hill. Kick by Ricci. Hill storms but Ricci ties him up before he lands. Punches in clinch by Ricci before he lands a driving double. Punches by Ricci in half guard. Ricci looks for side control but Hill recovers guard. Hard shots by Ricci. Ricci backs out briefly trying to trick hill and ends up in back mout off a scramble. Ricci grabs a gable grip RNC briefly but goes back to hard ground and pound. MMAFrenzy scores it a domination 10-9 Ricci.
  • R2 – Ricci with a nice double off Hill storming and Hill escapes and grabs an ugly guillotine before Ricci plants him again. Ricci takes his back with one hook. Ricci has both hooks in and is landing GNP. Hill stands up with Ricci on his back. more punches by Ricci and Hill drops back to the floor and pins an arm. Ricci loses the hooks but keeps his back. Hill keeps grabbing Ricci’s gloves. Ricci has the hooks in again and drops more punches.Ricci again with a gable grip RNC but cannot finish and goes back to strikes. Hill escapes with 10 left but does nothing. 10-8 Ricci based on positional dominance (20-17).
  • Mike Ricci def. Michael Hill via unanimous decision (20-18, 20-18, 20-18)

White is disappointed in the fight as well. Ricci says he’s trying to prove the people who said he was too small to be there wrong. Ricci’s victory wraps up the quarterfinals match-ups.

With the quarterfinals in the books, a surly Dana White tersely announces the semifinals, pitting Team Nelson’s Jon Manley vs. teammate Colton Smith, along with Team Carwin’s Mike Ricci and  Neil Magny keeping with Dana’s theme of making teammates fight this year, Dana says congratulations and walks off angrily.
