An explosive light heavyweight matchup between Mike Kyle and Gegard Mousasi is heading to Oklahoma City. The fighters have been scheduled to meet three times prior but the bout has been canceled each time due to injury. Kyle announced the pairing earlier this week.
Mousasi will be returning to the cage for the first time in over a year due to a torn ACL. Mousasi last defeated Ovince St-Preux via decision at last year’s “Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal.”
Kyle was last in action this past May at “Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier.” While Kyle lost the bout in devastating fashion, his opponent – Rafael “Feijao” Calvacante – tested positive for a banned substance following the fight and the result of the bout was turned to a “no contest.”
The January event will take place at the home of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Chesapeake Energy Arena. The arena was the original site for “Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir” before the event was canceled. The announced bout will join the previously announced bouts with Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold facing Lorenz Larkin, welterweight champion Nate Marquardt facing Tarec Saffiedine, Strikeforce Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier taking on Dion Staring, and a possible bout between lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez taking on Pat Healy. The Melendez-Healy pairing is rumored to be off however. Other bout announcements for the card will likely be made in the coming weeks.
