Diego Sanchez vs. Thiago Alves Will Not Take Place At UFC 89
A rumored welterweight bout between 170-pound contenders Thiago Alves and Diego Sanchez tentatively scheduled for UFC 89 on October 18th in Birmingham, England will not take place on the card according to Dave Meltzer at F4WOnline.com:
The Thiago Alves vs. Diego Sanchez match earmarked for 10/18 in Birmingham, England will not be taking place on the show. The Thiago Silva vs. Lyoto Machida match announced yesterday was to take its place. We don’t have an update yet on the status of Alves-Sanchez, other than the match has not been signed.
Middleweight contenders Michael Bisping and Chris Leben will clash in the UFC 89 main event and undefeated light heavyweights Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva will meet in the co-main event.

Who cares about Kimbo? After that Thompson fight, I don’t believe I’ll ever watch ELiteXC again. Alright I might watch Smith/Lawler because it’s free, but that’s it.
Sanchez/Alves is a fight that shouldn’t happen. I think Alves should be getting ready for his fight with GSP or Fitch. Sanchez is back, but he still needs a few more wins before he gets a title shot. Kos is probably more deserving of a title fight than Sanchez, even if he lost to GSP a few fights ago.

Yeah that might be true. Give Alves and easier tune up fight just to keep him sharp to fight the GSP/Fitch winner and have Sanchez and Koschek rematch to see who is next in line after Alves.
I DON’T CARE ABOUT ELITEXC EITHER I JUST WANT TO SEE KIMBO GET KNOCKED OUT… BUT WHY WOULD YOU GIVE ALVES AN EASY FIGHT WHEN HES FIGHTING TO BE A CONTENDER. TO BE ON THE TOP YOU NEED TO FIGHT TOUGH FIGHTERS. I DON’T THINK KOS DESERVES ANOTHER SHOT. HE HAS INPROVED HIS GAME ALOT. Ya its kind of sad Alves finishes Karo then Hughes with knees and everyone whats to give him a can for the number one contender shot at GSP/Fitch?? If he loses to Diego then he really shouldn’t be the number one contender? This is a good fight that UK got screwed out of here this was one of the main reasons for me to buy this event. If Diego beats Alves then give him a shot or make him fight Hazelett or Swick or Karo or Koscheck or Hughes or even Serra. Even tho I think Hughes Vs. Serra comes first. Plus If Alves beats Sanchez then he has Karo/Hughes/Sanchez under his belt.. Thats definitely a title plus some good experience.

Definitely a fight I want to see. Hope it happens…. By rankings, Diego should win but I’d give the upper hand to fat ass Alves. I know Diego is badass but I want to see him win another 2-3 fights in a row before I get excited about him as the new contender.
