Kickboxing legend Tyrone Spong made his MMA debut this past weekend, decimating Travis Bartlett in the first round of their light heavyweight bout. The outcome of the fight, although predictable, has left fans wondering why Bartlett, a 37-year-old with a serviceable but young MMA record of 7-3, was in the cage with a man that has had over 100 kickboxing bouts. According to WSOF Vice President and matchmaker Ali Abdel-Aziz, seven different opponents turned down the opportunity to welcome “The King of The Ring” to the cage.
One name on the list that stuck out, however, was UFC veteran Houston Alexander. “The Assassin” is coming off of back-to-back losses against Gilbert Yvel and Jan Blachowicz.
Tyrone Spong came into MMA as a very dangerous opponent for any fighter, being a high-risk, low-reward situation for those who ventured to take the bout. The kickboxer finds himself in a similar situation to Glover Teixeira a few months back, where although he is very experienced in combat, he has virtually no cache in the MMA community, making it hard to find established opponents for the Dutch-Surinamese kick-fighter.
