Bellator 76 Main Card Results – Alvarez Victorious; Martinez, Fabiano and Richmond Advance

At Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, Canada, Bellator 76 took place with what may very well be the last promotional bout for former champion Eddie Alvarez as he defeated lightweight mainstay Patricky “Pitbull” in an instant classic. Also on the bill was the start of the season’s featherweight tournament.

It was an instant round of the year contender when former Bellator lightweight champion met the perennial contender Patricky Freire. While it was a short fight, Alvarez and “Pitbull” put each other to the test early on; a tremendous right hand from the Brazilian put Alvarez, on Queer Street, but the former champion was there to stay. After grabbing the clinch, Alvarez was able to take control and regain his senses. Both men immediately started trading once it was broken up. In true Eddie Alvarez fashion, the former champion returned the favor. The two traded punches and circled one another. The most recent high-profile Blackilian then landed a brutal head kick, dropping his foe with the vicious kick to the skull, finishing him off with punches at 4:54 of the first frame.

Alvarez is now expected to be at the center of a bidding war between Bellator and Zuffa upon the completion of his contract with tonight’s fight.

It was a fifteen-minute battle when Rad Martinez and Nazareno Malegarie faced off in the cage. Both men gave it all they had with the final tournament slot on the line, with the wrestler and jiu jitsu player unloading on each other for three rounds. While the American clearly held the advantage in the power department, Malegarie was never disheartened. Both men battled about the cage, but the strength of Martinez’s punches seemed to be too much to overcome for “El Tigre”, who was dropped multiple times. At the sound of the final bell, the Utah native earned a unanimous 30-27 decision from the judges.

WEC veteran Waggney Fabiano made his return to action a successful one when he met Akop Stepanyan. The Brazilian jiu jitsu expert was clearly head and shoulders above his opponent in the grappling realm as a leg trip led to his moving to mount and sticking an armbar in the first period.  While Stepanyan tried to tough it out, it was inevitable. The Russ0-Armenian tapped at 3:24 of the opening frame.

Bellator’s main card opened up with a featherweight tournament bout between Mike Richman and Jeremy Spoon. The fight ended early as “The Marine” landed a big head kick early on, following his opponent to the mat and putting Spoon to sleep in just 23 seconds.
