Bellator 76 Preliminary Results – Shamhalaev Advances, Khasbulaev Earns Alternate Slot

Bellator 76 takes place live at the at Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada. The evening is home to a lightweight super fight between former champion Eddie Alvarez and perennial contender Patricky “Pitbull” Freire as well as a the start of the featherweight tournament bout for the promotion’s seventh season.

In the evening’s first featherweight tournament bout, Russian debutant Shahbulat Shamhalaev advanced to the Bellator Season 7 Featherweight Tournament Semifinals. The kickboxer was able to maintain distance and work his striking game, but it was on the ground where he would put an end to the night of Cody Bollinger, who would turtle up under pressure. The Russian earned a TKO stoppage after beating him senseless with a slew of unanswered punches at 4:49 of the opening stanza.

Ali Mokdad and Simon Marini went to war in their middleweight bout. After a rough first frame for “The Monster,” who was badly hurt, he came back. Mokdad would control the pace of the next two rounds, using superior boxing and grappling, and earn a unanimous 29-28 decision.

Magomedrasul Khasbulaev blasted Nayeb Hezma in a mere 24 seconds in their featherweight tournament reserve bout.  A leg kick from the Frenchman was met with an overhand right, which the Russian followed up with four heavy ground strikes, bringing an end to the bout early on.

Dan O’Grady defeated A.J Matthews in a hotly contested welterweight bout; both men battled back-and-forth for 15 minutes. While it was far from tepid, neither was able to gain a clear advantage in any aspect of the game. In the end, the H8 squad product, O’Grady, earned a split decision (29-28,29-28,28-29).

Chad Laprise beat Ainsley Robinson from pillar to post for 15 minutes. The 1996 Canadian Olympian had nothing for Laprise, who just simply nullified his offense and battered him from the opening bell. While Robinson had the wherewithal to make it to the final bell, the welterweight found himself on the short end of a lopsided unanimous 30-27 decision.

Jason Fischer posted a dominant performance against Kyle Prepolec in the evening’s curtain jerker. Over two rounds, “The Finisher” dictated the pace of the bout on all fronts. It was in the third stanza where the Detroit native took advantage of Prepolec attempting a sweep, which brought the bout to a halt.  Fischer sat down on his arm and used it pass guard more easily, finally cinching an arm triangle and forcing a tap at 3:19 of the period.
