After a wild 24 hours for the promotion, UFC on FX 5 took place after a few bumps in the road. On a night with a few upsets, as well as a wide array of submissions and knockouts to choose from, Michael Johnson, Justin Edwards, Diego Nunes, and Bart Palaszewski take home the evening’s post-fight bonuses, earning $40,000 each.
Johnson posted a stunning come-from-behind “Knockout of The Night” victory over Danny Castillo. The Blackzilian found himself rocked early in the first round, spending the duration fending off submissions and absorbing punishment. In the second frame, “The Menace” countered a leg kick from Castillo with a short left that had the Alpha Male product reeling. The Missouri native then came crashing down on Castillo, beating him into unconsciousness at 1:06 of the middle stanza.
Edwards notched an upset victory against longtime veteran Josh Neer. Both men came out swinging, “The Dentist” then shot in for a takedown and fell right into an arm-in guillotine. Neer’s attempts to defend were for naught as he would find himself asleep at the 45-second mark, allowing Edwards to live up to his “Fast Eddy” moniker and take home the “Submission of The Night”.
Diego Nunes came into the cage looking like a new man at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. “The Gun” who largely looks to keep distance with his kicks and counter, rarely punching, came at Bart Palaszewski like a man possessed. For the first ten minutes, the Brazilian battered his opponent about the cage. “Bartimus” would have his moment in the third, as Nunes would revert back to his passive style, but it didn’t last long. Nearing the end of the bout, the former Nova Uniao member dropped Palaszewski one last time, and beat him until the final bell. In the end, Nunes would have his hand raised with a unanimous decision. Both he and the Team Curran product would take home a “Fight of the Night” bonus.
