It has been nearly six years since Clay Guida first arrived in the UFC lightweight division. In that time, “The Carpenter” has put on some true classics with the likes of Tyson Griffin, Roger Huerta, Diego Sanchez, and Ben Henderson. Unfortunately for the Illinois native, all the aforementioned bouts were losses on his end. Although Guida has had a very solid run during his UFC tenure, he finally recognized the writing on the wall.
The undersized lightweight will now look to find a new life at featherweight behind back-to-back losses to current UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson and former title challenger Gray Maynard. Guida’s high-energy, fan-friendly style will serve as a welcomed addition to the 145 lb. division, especially given the current lack of marketable contenders that have not been trounced by Jose Aldo. While no official date nor opponent has been announced, Clay’s representatives at VFD Sports Marketing have said that he will likely be returning to action in early 2013.
