Magalhaes Submits Pokrajac
Vinny Magalhaes marked a successful UFC return by doing what he does best in submitting Igor Pokrajac. Magalhaes controlled the first round with his strong grappling but was unable to finish the Croatian fighter. In the second round however, Pokrajac made a fatal mistake by taking Magalhaes to the ground. The “TUF 8″ finalist quickly attacked with a triangle attempted that he morphed into an armbar attempt, then a kimura attempt, before reversing back to a straight arm bar finish.
Grant Outlasts Dunham
Evan Dunham and T.J. Grant put on a fantastic display of MMA tonight at the Air Canada Centre. Grant bloodied and battered Dunham for the first two rounds of the fight but Dunham would not relent. With the bout extremely close in the third, Dunham appeared to get the better of Grant in the third but it was not enough to steal the fight from Grant.
Pierson Survives Against Benoist
Sean Pierson picked up his first victory in his home province of Ontario but nearly lost it early. Pierson controlled the first two rounds by exploiting Lance Benoist’s porous striking defense and by securing timely takedowns. Pierson had to survive a strong surge from Benoist in the third that saw him severely rocked and close to defeat. While Pierson survived to get the unanimous decision, a draw would have made perfect sense with the way the bout ended.
Brimage Edges Hettes
Marcus Brimage and Jimy Hettes was one of our two “sleeper” fights to watch at UFC 152 and the two fighters did not disappoint. The first two rounds resulted in clear victories for each fighter. Brimage’s power and boxing skills dominated round 1 as he dropped Hettes multiple times but played it safe and did not over pursue on the ground. In the second, Hettes was finally able to get the fight to the ground where he constantly attacked Brimage with submission attempts. While Hettes was able to get him down twice in the round, Brimage did a great job of defending the submission attempts of the Pennsylvania kid.
It all came down to the third round, with Brimage imposing his will in the striking game once again early and often. Hettes pressed hard but he did not score with many strikes nor could he get the fight to the ground as both fighters were clearly fatigued. In the end, Brimage did enough to sway the judges in his favor, earning a hard fought unanimous decision victory.
