It would seem that behind back-to-back losses to Benson Henderson for the UFC Lightweight Title, Frankie Edgar’s window for an immediate title shot against UFC Featherweight Kingpin Jose Aldo has closed. Dana White, who reportedly tried to talk “The Answer” into a move to featherweight said at yesterday’s post-fight press conference that if Edgar were to drop down to to the lighter division, he would need to notch a victory in the division first.
“I think Frankie would have to fight somebody at 145. We’ve got that thing backed up. We’ve got all these backed up titles right now and if I know Frankie like I do, I’m sure he’s gonna want to go down there and fight right way,” said White. “Again, I’m not telling Frankie to go to 145 or anything like that. I’ll talk to him later and see what he wants to do.”
White has been very public in his desire for the Renzo Gracie student to 145 lb., but given the strength of Edgar’s performances at lightweight, those requests have been quelled. While the former champion’s future remains unclear for the time being, many do feel that his future is at featherweight, given that he will not be challenging Benson Henderson for a title again any time soon.

While Edgar could still remain competitive in the lw division, if he wants a title again the quickest route may be through fw.
Unless he was interested in the Strikeforce LW title!
True, although if he goes to SF and wins the belt he’ll be staying there until either 1) SF folds; or 2) he loses the belt. There aren’t too many fighters who would be willing to do it, people already talk about Melendez having no real contenders, what would happen to Frankie if he jumped ship, he’d have to beat up all the same guys GIl already has?
Agreed. Give him Mendez and if he wins that then he will get Aldo
That would be interesting Frankie and Gilbert
very close fight.
guys this good and so durable the 5 minute rounds aren’t enough. it never gets in deep. they really need the 10 minute rounds.. of pride – those were epic and strangely it’s less ‘boring’ simply because into that 7th minute something just had to give way….
Also not that I blame guys like jones or bendo for using it – but the INTENTIONAL GRATUITOUS HAND ON THE MATT RULE SUCKS
- it’s so incongruous with the other rules and the flow of the fight..
there are ways around it like when frankie punched bendo, or the big knee that Anderson caved in sonnen’s sternum with (whether it grazed the chin is irrelevant because the damage was to the body- myself i didn’t even see the graze)
I agree Frankie vs Gilbert is a good fight but i think Edgar would kill Gilbert.
