In The Scrum: UFC 150

UFC President Dana WhiteAfter an extravagant night of fights in the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, UFC President Dana White stuck around after the UFC 150 post-fight press conference to answer questions from various media outlets. White would go on to discuss a litany of issues after the controversial main event which saw Ben Henderson outpoint Frankie Edgar to retain the UFC Lightweight Championship. On the docket were various topics, which included what’s next for Ben Henderson and Donald Cerrone, the disappointing live gate for the event, Anderson Silva’s future, Overeem’s suspension, Barao’s future, his rocky relationship with Roy Nelson, and a very public twitter feud with former UFC fighter Jason “Mayhem” Miller which took place yesterday.

  • During the post-fight press conference, a ruckus broke out outside of the media room and was clearly audible. According to White, it was “managers going at it,” which Ariel Helwani later confirmed that Ben Henderson and Frankie Edgar’s management had a bit of a tiff backstage.
  • UFC 150 was the worst Live gate since 2007.  White blames “bad summer” in Colorado (shootings and fires). Dana also informed the media that Direct TV was down during the event, eliminating a percentage of PPV buys as well.
  • “Henderson-Diaz is a VERY fun fight, we’ve got some fun s**t planned,” hopefully the fun includes Fox.
  • Penn vs. MacDonald is just a rumor, not a done deal.
  • Cerrone and Pettis will not be on the December Fox card.
  • “Anderson (Silva) can be as vocal as he wants to be, whatever the fight is, it is. … Anderson is not fighting until the end of the year.”
  • With a coy smile, Dana White mentioned that GSP and Anderson Silva are both open to super fight.
  • “I like Ronda Rousey so much, but women’s MMA isn’t deep enough to make a division right now. … she’s pretty popular.” Dana goes on to refer to her as “the one female fighter I could see in the UFC”
  • Pending the outcome of Rousey’s bout this coming saturday with Sarah Kaufman, Rousey vs. Cyborg is a strong possibility.
  • Diaz vs Silva is not happening: “It’s not that it doesn’t interest me, it just doesn’t make sense.”
  • Overeem is not getting off suspension early. Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez is happening and will not be on Fox.
  • White on his relationship with Roy Nelson: “There are so many things I’d love to say about the stupid shit that comes out of his mouth. … I used to have to deal with him once in a while. Now that we’re filming, I see him three days per-week. … He’s annoying.”
  • White on twitter feud with Jason “Mayhem” Miller: “Mayhem sent that tweet, he has some issues. He started talking like a jackass, I blasted him back. He’s not going through a good time, no matter what he says. I actually feel bad about it. Jason is a nutty guy, he’s never been my favorite fighter, but I don’t hate or wish any ill-will to the kid. It bummed me out all day, it sucked”
  • Leonard Garcia’s announcement that he will be on the Macau card is news to the UFC President.
  • “The Jones-Nike Deal is huge. The Pacquiao line is being shut down, the Jon Jones line is starting.”
  • After a brutal loss to Michael Kuiper, it was revealed Jared Hamman’s hamstring detached from the bone. Dana says “he’s tough as nails. He’ll get a bonus.”
  • On the “grudge weight fight” Chael announced over twitter: “Chael is nuts. I haven’t even talked to Chael at all. He comes out and says how it is, then I have to come and tell you that it’s not true.”
  • Wanderlei Silva and Dana have an understanding, Silva will fight again.
  • Nate Diaz felt Frankie Edgar won the fight.
  • On the Henderson-Edgar decision: “No matter what I think, this guy’s (Bendo) won two fights by the judges.”
  • “Lightweight is so stacked and it needs to be unclogged” that Dana doesn’t know where Edgar stands.
  • “Guillard stepped up and took this (emotional) fight on short notice, … I thought Melvin should have stayed on him.”
  • There are no plans for newly crowned interim UFC Bantamweight Champion Renan Barao as of yet.
  • Hendo is “not even close” to an easy fight for Jon Jones, says the president, who is then quick to make a reference to his knocking out Fedor.
