UFC on Fox 5 Update: MacDonald vs. Penn Expected to Co-Headline December Card

Rory MacDonaldAfter Rory MacDonald suffered a massive cut and had to back out of his scheduled bout with BJ Penn, both fighters had requested specific cards for the bout to be moved. Neither fighter will apparently get their wish however as the bout will apparently co-headline this year’s final Fox event. The bout was first reported by Nate Quarry on last night’s episode of “MMA Uncensored.”

The extended time off will allow MacDonald the time for his cut to heal fully before he enters into a full camp. In addition, the move should help accomodate the rescheduling of the fighters participation in VADA style testing.

No main event or city has been named for the final show of the year on Fox but news on those particulars are expected in the coming weeks. UFC on Fox 5 is scheduled for December 8.

I was hoping the fight was going to be in Montreal, but this news is great. As vjpenn and will have pointed out, awesome fight for Fox and the fans.

Am I the only one who is NOT excited about this fight. I honestly don’t see how anybody can be. Sure BJ Penn may be a legend but he is way over matched at the WW division. He has not done anything lately and I do not believe he truly even cares about the sport only about fame and money. He is what 3-4-1 in his last 8 fights and really should be 3-5. He was completely dominated by GSP, got whooped by Diaz, and outpointed by Edgar twice. Fitch should have been the winner of that fight and this win over Hughes meant nothing as Hughes is past his prime. The wins of Sanchez and Florian were nice but Florian while he is a very good fighter seems to choke in big fights especially title fights and Sanchez is at a conundrum where he is too big for 155 and too little for 170. The weight cutting affects him and he isn’t the same fighter that he is at 170 but he is overpowered at 170. He should be fighting at like 162.5. If MacDonald wins and I think he will it doesn’t do anything for his career. Sure he has a win over a big name fellow in Penn but had the win came 5 years ago and at 155 it would have been a big deal but instead it comes at a time where Penn was beaten into retirement and only is coming out for the money. Penn’s heart isn’t into MMA anymore and I don’t think it ever has been. He leaves when times get tough and comes back when times as in financial times get tough. I don’t blame him for doing so but by doing so he has lost all respect that I had for him. If he wanted to come back he should have done it against someone who is not in contention for a title shot. He is delaying the division and possibly hurting it. Should MacDonald win it does nothing for him; it doesn’t propel him farther up the ladder. A win against Penn is no more impressive, no matter in what fashion it comes, then Hendricks over Fitch or Koscheck or even Erick Silva’s win over Brenneman. However, a loss to Penn throws MacDonald down the stairs. Penn may come out and completely dominate MacDonald or he may squeeze out a decision both of those would hurt MacDonald but what happens if a judge makes a bad decision or the referee makes a bad call those hurt MacDonald even more. He would not only have a loss on his record but a loss that probably shouldn’t have been. MacDonald should be fight Hendricks or Silva not Penn. Penn should have done the proper and mature thing had he wanted to fight and fought someone in the same boat as him such as Koscheck or Fitch. MacDonald is also at fault for this because it was him who also agreed to the fight. He called out Penn and shouldn’t had. He is wasting his time and risking his name with this fight. I’d much rather have seen Penn vs Fitch and MacDonald vs Hendricks.
