There is no single hot button issue in the sport of mixed martial arts these days that stands above Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) in its ability to raise controversy. With, currently, five fighters on the UFC roster granted a testosterone use exemption (TUE), many have lashed out in opposition of TRT, saying it’s just another way of doping or cheating. UFC Tonight host Ariel Helwani posed the question to a panel of UFC stars last night, giving way to what Fuel TV has called “The Great TRT Debate”.
The panel which included lightweight turned analyst Kenny Florian, former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans, middleweight contender Michael Bisping, and UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz were largely split on the matter. Cruz seemed to take an “all or nothing” stance, where everyone should be allowed TRT use, while Evans simply doesn’t think any restrictions should be put in place. Opposing them, Florian and Bisping cite ability to train more and recover quicker when using testosterone, giving the fighter an unfair edge.
