[UPDATE] It was originally reported the bout would co-headline “Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy” but it appears the bout will actually take place later in the fall according to original reporter John Morgan‘s twitter account.
“No sooner than it breaks, there’s already a little change. Cormier-Mir will now take place at a soon-to-be-announced event in Oct. or Nov. It’s still a Strikeforce card, and further details are expected soon as to whether or not it is the main event, a title fight, etc.” [UPDATE]
It appears that Frank Mir will be the first fighter to cross from the UFC to Strikeforce when he faces Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier this fall. The reports nix original reports that Cormier would face former UFC champion Tim Sylvia in his final UFC fight. USA Today reported the match up citing sources from both the UFC and Strikeforce.
UFC President Dana White had this to say about the matchup:
“The reality is, Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world. He just won the grand prix and beat Josh Barnett. He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy.”
Frank Mir last fought at UFC 146, where he lost to UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos. The loss stopped a three-fight win-streak for the former UFC champion.
While this may seem odd while lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez cannot find a UFC opponent, it is important to remember that Strikeforce had already decided to scrap the heavyweight division. So while Mir could win and immediately rejoin the UFC, any lightweight who defeated Melendez for the title would have to remain with Strikeforce.
The Mir vs. Cormier fight will take place this fall.

Wonder how much they paid Mir to jump ship?
Mir by 2nd rd sub.
Under contract by Zuffa, I bet he gets the same contract price but possibly a spiff or something to sweeten the pot-if he wins a crack at UFC heavyweight gold. Since he lost his last fight to JDS, this makes sense for a lateral (not completely lateral) move to Strikeforce where he could beat Cormier and Zuffa possibly could dissolve the Strikeforce heavyweight division thus giving Mir (if he wins) another crack at the UFC HW champ and thus unifying the belts. Just my speculation and late night ramblings…Thoughts?
*Correction, I just read this is the last HW Strikeforce fight and it’s a non title bout. Possibly for number one contender?
i wonder if Mir is going to be sporting his UFC sponcered apperal in the SF cage?
Wow Mir gets basically two title holders in a row. Wondering if he’ll actually attempt a take down in this go around… But seriously, I love Mir, but if Barnett couldn’t take down Cormier then how in the world will Mir? Idk but this is usually right about the time Mir shocks us. Maybe he’s got a sub lesson for Cormier….if he can get him on the ground. Very excited about this, and wondering why they don’t do the same at lw.
No UFC fighter will go to Strikeforce to fight for a title because should they win, they’re stuck over there until they lose.

This only applies to other weight classes not heavyweight because as stated in the article SF has already decided to scrap the HW div. So either way Mir will be right back in the UFC afterwards as long as he doesn’t retire.
That’s why he did it. If you click the link, Malki explains why no one will go fight Melendez. What I said was in response to Devin’s question about the lightweights.
This has the potential of being a huge SF card. Props, I like it.
better than timbo
Yeah I saw that finally, thanks Bsbiz. I think guida should seriously consider it. It’s either that or move down, for him. He can beat Melendez imo and then he could get some fat pay day fights for a while. Then Melendez could be free to come over, albeit coming off a loss…
Mir ko like kongo fight but follow up with punches instead of a sub
