UFC 148: Silva vs. Sonnen II Payouts, Breaks Live Gate Record

It would appear that all the hoopla about UFC 148: Silva vs Sonnen II being the biggest fight in UFC history may have turned out to be true.

UFC 148 shattered all prior records in Sin City. The record which was previously held by UFC 66, where Chuck Liddel defended his Light Heavyweight Championship against Tito Ortiz, stood for nearly 6 years after drawing a $5.3 million gate. The epic rematch between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen left that number in the dust, drawing a live gate of $6.5 million

MMA Junkie has also reported the payouts for the evening’s headlining bouts, with Forrest Griffin being the top earner after taking home a $150k win bonus in his victory over Tito Ortiz, who took home $250k in the final bout of his illustrious career.

The numbers listed below do not include discretionary bonuses and Pay Per-View bonuses, which both Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen earn a percentage of.

  • Forrest Griffin: $275,000 ($125,000 + $150,000 win bonus)
  • Tito Ortiz: $250,000
  • Anderson Silva: $200,000 (no win bonus)
  • Chael Sonnen: $50,000
  • Cung Le: $150,000 (no win bonus)
  • Patrick Cote: $21,000

I saw the fight, and I was a Chael Sonnen fan when the fight started. I now feel that Sonnen is full of shit. He striaght up quit. He’s got no back bone. As for Forest, that guy is loved by everybody. It would probebly help the UFC, if they had more fighters like him. If you don’t come to fight, why come at all???

When someone knees you (with full power with his weight into the knee) in the abdomen area and you get winded, you will not be able to defend much. MMA fighters who have done some real training will tell you the same. You become very weak.. your arms become just as weak as it would be if you were gased!

im confused, silva gets 200,000 as pound for pound best fighter, and is destroying everyone, (i dont add in sponsor, and ppv%) and jon jones bones stone took away 400,000 plus sponsors plus ppv% in atlanta beating rashad evens who earned 300,000 …. correct me if im wrong and maybe i just dont know, but should silva be getting the highest payout of any mma fighter, silva go talk to your boss.

    • Aaron Diesel says:

The pay is per the fighter’s contract, and managerial negotiation. Silva’s purse is via the rules of those agreements. Down here, RFC and XFC both do a per fight purse agreement. Of course, these organizations are a fraction of the size of the UFC.

He is making what he and his management negotiated for him to make. He will continue to make that until the end of his current contract.

Forest is cry baby poor sport loser that has zero respect for mma. He ran out crying when Anderson knocked him out and then he pulls that shit. Cut his ass

I am glad cung le got good $$$. He deserves it! I have never seen him put on a boring fight! In my opinion, Le v. Cote was fight of the night… but they were all good fights all together!

  • HARC says:

Yep, I don’t understand it either!
He fucked Forrest up, beat every fighter in the Octagon and beadly too and he doesn’t earn shit.
Pound for Pound King, you should receive more.
I guess he didn’t negociate a good contract.
Once his contract is up, he should be the highest paid fighter.

This doesnt show what they all made behind the scenes. The main card shows it cost less than 1 million to pay the fighters, but with 6.5 mil at the gate, and who knows how much in PPV money. The fighters are getting hooked up back stage.

Just an example of what could have been made…
    $50 for PPV times 750,000 buys = $37.5 million
I don’t know what it cost to put something on PPV, but even if the cable companies charge 50% thats still almost 19 mil. You add the 6.5 mil from the gate and the UFC made 25 mil. Even with all the advertising, renting the venues, everyones salaries, there is still plenty left over to hook up the fighters.

ANDERSON SILVA IS THE BEST P4P FIGHTER……
