Former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Ronaldo Souza will step back into the cage on August 18 when he takes on Derek Brunson. The two were originally slated to meet on Strikeforce’s March offering, but licensing issues kept the Wilmington native off the card.
After Brunson was denied a license, Jacare (15-3) instead faced Bristol Marunde in a lopsided affair. The Brazilian outstruck his opponent over three rounds en route to a third round arm triangle submission.
Brunson (9-1), is coming off of a contentious decision loss to Kendall Grove at SHOfight 20, where he stepped in as a short-notice replacement for Terry Martin. The Jackson’s MMA product is currently undefeated inside the Strikeforce cage, owning two decisions and a rear-naked choke victory in his favor.
Strikeforce: Rousey vs Kaufman is slated to take place at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego. The card is anchored by the eponymous women’s bantamweight title bout and has had several fights added thus far.
- Ronda Rousey (c) vs. Sarah Kaufman (for Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Championship)
- Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Derek Brunson
- Roger Bowling vs. Tarec Saffiedine
- T.J. Cook vs. Ovince St. Preux
