Now without an opponent, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (20-6) has been offered a bout with promotional newcomer Glover Teixeira (18-2).
There is, however, one slight issue, according to UFC President Dana White, Shogun’s management are “adamantly refusing” to take the fight. “They want nothing to do with Glover,” White told MMA Junkie.
Teixeira, a Chuck Liddell protege, was long considered the best light heavyweight outside the Zuffa banner. Recently having the Visa issues which kept him out of the promotion sorted out, the hard-hitting Brazilian made his UFC debut at last weekend’s UFC 146 event. Glover’s debut say him absolutely obliterate Kyle Kingsbury on the event’s undercard.
Rua’s lack of enthusiasm should come as no shock, a bout with Teixeira is ostensibly a no-win situation for the former champion. While a match-up with his countryman promises excitement in spades, the newcomer lacks the name recognition to further the Brazilian’s trek back to the top. Having fought on the facebook portion of this passed weekend’s event, Texeira’s exposure may seem limited to Shogun’s camp.
While no timeline has been set for the announcement of a new bout, it is likely the clash of Brazilian won’t take place despite Zuffa’s best efforts.
