According to a report published by Globo’s SporTV, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has injured his knee while preparing to face Chael Sonnen in a rematch.
Apparently, while discussing fellow Brazilian Vitor Belfort’s recent hand injury, the champ pointed out that injuries are frequent in their sport. As an example, Silva revealed that he’s already hurt his knee during this training camp but that he’s confident it will be healed in time for the fight.
Shortly after the report started making the internet rounds, Silva took to Twitter to assure MMA fans that his knee is doing fine and that he’s on target to appear in the cage against Sonnen at UFC 148 as scheduled – he even included a picture of himself throwing a flying knee during training to back up his claim.
People my knee is doing very well thank you! Stay calm day on July 7 will be doing my job. Osss (translated from Portuguese)
Silva and Sonnen are scheduled to revisit their 2010 fight, which saw Sonnen dominate for the majority of the fight before succumbing to a late submission locked in by the champion. It was revealed after that fight that Silva had broken his rib in the weeks leading up to the bout and had been advised by doctors not to compete.
UFC 148 is scheduled to take place on July 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
