Anthony “Rumble” Johnson has become notorious for missing weight, as he was released from his longtime promotional home, the UFC, earlier this year after showing up to fight Vitor Belfort eleven pounds heavy. Johnson was making his middleweight debut against Belfort, with the aim to correct the weight-cutting issues which had caused him to show up overweight for two prior welterweight contests.
Apparently, Rumble has not overcome his weight issues.
The 28-year-old is scheduled to face Dave Branch today at Titan FC 22 in what has been billed as a middleweight fight since it was announced this past March. However, Johnson apparently came in almost ten pounds heavy for the bout, weighing in at 194.2lbs, and now the bout has been quietly changed to a 195lbs catchweight – even though Branch weighed in at 189.2lbs.
The promoter, Joe Kelly, appeared on Bloody Elbow Radio recently and maintains that there was no issue with the weight and that the bout is being contested at the weight it was contracted to be. Branch’s camp also told MMAFighting that there was no issue with the weight, though there appears to be significant evidence that the weight for the fight was changed very recently.
Regardless, Johnson and Branch will fight tonight at Titan FC 22, which will take place at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas.
