Cung Le Likely To Fight Again In 2008; Misaki A “Possible” Opponent

Cung LeStrikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le, who is actively pursuing an acting career, will likely fight again in 2008, according to MMA Weekly. Le first-revealed his intentions to wait until late-2008 or early-2009 to fight again in a recent interview with MMAFrenzy.com.

Le won the middleweight title with a third-round TKO victory over then-champion Frank Shamrock in March after fracturing a bone in Shamrock’s arm with a kick.

“He’ll be back in the gym. He’s still training, and he’ll be back at it… You know, it’s a possibility he might wind up fighting (Kazuo) Misaki, who we were hoping he’d fight last November, but there was scheduling conflicts on Misaki’s side, so it didn’t happen,” Strikeforce Vice President Mike Afromowitz told MMA Weekly Radio. “Misaki’s a fighter that we recently signed, so Cung may wind up fighting him or he may just go back and fight Frank (Shamrock) again for his next fight, but he’ll be back… I think he’ll fight one more fight before the end of this year.”

Strikeforce’s next event is scheduled for September 20th at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, California.

you know i dont much care for this guy he has no real dedication to fighting he is always leaveing one sport or another. now he is off to acting!!!! what a sell out. i dont care to watch his fights.

  • JAI says:

I like watching him fight. I like his cool unorthadox kicks.

  • JOEL B says:

yea that is probably the only thing he has going for him is his quick kicks

  • FixXeR says:

I like him…I hope to see him fight again. Would like to see him fight some real cometition in the UFC though.

  • Sean says:

Go ahead and call me crazy but from what I saw in his fight with shamrock, if shamrock had of just fought instead of playing to the crowd and such I think he would have destroyed Le.. He played with him until they hard leg sweep take down. after that shamrock had him hurt bad.. unfortunately showboating and a broken arm ended all of that for shamrock

  • KOuch says:

    JOEL,

I am bias because I have met Cung several times over the last 9 years. He is a great person. He has dominated his other opponents before making the transition to MMA. There are a lot of guys who would destroy him but do not doubt his skills. He is very talented and unfortunately underrated. Maybe with time he can change some minds. Shamrock lost because he sucks now. What is a sell out anyway? Is it someone who succeeds and then ventures into other areas of life?

  • Dietrich says:

    KOuch,
Just curious…Do you think Cung Le would have the rep he has if he didn’t have the unusual Kickboxing background?

  • puma says:

Now Cung Le and Lyoto Machida-that would be an awesome fight-2 guys with an onothodox striking style going at it. That would something.

  • Dietrich says:

    Puma,
That is interesting…I think I would have to pick Machida in that one…

  • KOuch says:

    Dietrich,

As far as MMA goes, not at all. MMA definitely projected him into the public a lot more than he previously was with just kick boxing. Cung trained a friend of mine which is why I new who he was in the first place years ago. He did have a following before he jumped into MMA. Now he has a bigger following because of MMA. His unique style makes him fun to watch but he needs to hit the weights and work on some wrestlin/jitsu. Like I said, I’m bias.

  • puma says:

A long time ago I watched a bunch of his San Shou tournaments and was very impressed, and I still see come classic San Shou in his MMA. He’s also been in the Tiger Claw Martial Arts Supply Catalogs for years. I have been aware of him for a while and I like his style. I’d much rather a guy come from that kind of background and apply to MMA than a wrestler come in and apply it to MMA(unless the wrestler can adapt-like Randy Couture or others like him)

  • KOuch says:

    Puma,

Good point. I’m not diggin’ some of these wrestlers in MMA. The takedowns are nice but so many wrestlers seem to have forgotten the great art of G&P. I’m not saying it’s easy to take someone down and beat the **** out of them. I’m just saying I hate seeing guys win by takedowns and manipulating their opponent on the ground by pushing their body weight on him. Much more exciting when people get taken down and pounded.

  • Dietrich says:

    Kouch,
    Thanks for the follow up.
