Light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is set to take on former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson on September 1 in Las Vegas. UFC President Dana White announced the matchup via twitter.
While there is currently no event scheduled for September 1, the bout will likely headline UFC 151 with UFC 150 and UFC 152 already scheduled.
The matchup was originally planned for UFC 149 but the bout was scrapped after Jones needed more time to rest after his UFC 145 victory over Rashad Evans.

I remember when champions would fight 3-4 times a year. Jones needs to rest? In other words 6 months before defending his title. *sigh* Yeah he’s so old, and got hurt so badly in that last fight… He might as well wait till 2013 before taking on Dan just to be cautious and make sure he is well rested enough.
Pfftt. I’m starting to see why so many of you dislike this kid.
Only 5 champions in the history of the UFC have fought 3x in one year: Frank Shamrock, Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell, Tim Sylvia, and Jon Jones. Jones and Sylvia also fought 4x that year.
Must be new to the sport………….
The dude has fought 17 times in 4 years, so he’s averaging just over 4 fights a year.
Just because the kids young doesn’t mean he doesn’t need rest. It’s easy for people that don’t fight to talk smack about a guy cause he wants more then 3 months off after defending his title 3 times.
He deserves a little extra time to recharge before fighting his next 4 fights in about 14 months.
BTW if his last against Evans didn’t go 5 rounds, he probably would be fighting sooner. Going 4 with Quinton will catch up to him too. It’s not him dodging anyone or backing down, he just simply wants a couple months to relax, rest and then get back out there.
Cid,
Really. Here is a recap on Jones fights. I think you are only remember Chuck’s Career. Since Chuck KO’d his opponents he can fight 3, 4, 6 times a year. He could still fight in Dec, but doubt it. Since Hendo is no slappy.

I think he can use the rest like everybody else is saying, but I also think it is an unfair advantage. While other fighters fight 3-4 times a year, they are getting less rest between their last fight and championship fight. I agree that, champion or not, they should only be aloud so much time to rest.
I know in this case, Hendo took a good long break too. Possibly too long.
yea cid way to phish for people to agree with you lol.
Unfortunately champs don’t fight more than twice or three times. I don’t love bones, but the kid has fought a bunch of times in the last few years. I’m ok with the break.
Excited for the miracle of hendo taking out bones and then spider at cowboy stadium and go out legend ;)
The longer he waits the older hendo gets and the worse his cardio gets. Hopefully this will be a good fight but if hendo’s cardio in the 4th and 5th is like the the 4th and 5 th of the shogun fight he has no chance.
Yes because as we all know once a person hits 40, they start to age in dog years. Yeesh!
Jones by pure demolition.
I hope he makes a statement of Hendo. Then he can go on the shelf and come back once DW hands him another shot.
Just like when he came back from Pride.
People are underestimating Hendo in this fight. First of all, the dude has one of the best chins in mma and can take a punch and KEEP coming. Second of all, he’s a greco roman wrestler which means he’s not too shabby in the clinch which plays into jon jones’s clinch style of takedowns. Jones doesn’t shoot in like a free style wrestler he clinches you up and takes you down. Then you have hendo’s ko power. Hendo seems to ALWAYS find a way to land that right hand. ALwAYS. Because of hendo’s chin, he WILL eat the punches necessary to get inside and position himself well to land the “h bomb” on Jones.
Age doesn’t mean $hit when you talk about Hendo. When was the last time you saw him look like a “40 year old” the dude is in there against way younger guys, bigger guys and going 5 rounds.
Jones is the favorite and should win this fight but it’s not going to be as easy as people think. I think Hendo will be the first person (like chael vs anderson) to really bring the fight to Jones and push the pace on him which is something Rampage and Rashad should have done but didnt.
I truly believe, that if Hendo has a solid shot of getting inside Jones’s reach and hurting him.
Jones has been untouchable i know, but hey, we’ll see!
*i truly believe hendo has a solid shot of getting inside jone’s reach and hurting him
PREACH ON BROTHA JAZZ!
One thing that we should all look at is that Hendo is an undersized light heavyweight and jones is on the large side of the weight class. I mean wasnt hendo’s last lost to Jake Sheilds who is prob 3 quarters the size of jones.
I hope Hendo wins but he has never had to greco roman wrestle a guy who is like 6″ taller than him, outweighs him and can elbow him in the face.
I am 100% tired of watching people fight jones that have to land one huge haymaker punch to beat jones, IMO I would much rather see him move up to heavyweight where there are much better matchups for him or watch him fight Gustaffson over Hendo, even though hendo deserves it more.
@Jazz
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Hendo has a great shot, and absolutely deserves the fight. And when he does land, he will pounce, something Rashad probably wishes he had done during the one time he had Bones dazed. But Hendo won’t let any opportunity go to waste.
Um except when hendo beat fedor and nog. And Jake was actually a decent size 185, who just had his night against hendo. Hendo has laid down a hall of fame career with his solid greco and quintessential one punch ko style, so its not like this is a new technique that he is left using with old age. Bones may be the best ever, but hendo is a game opponent and there are a couple more guys who can and hopefully will earn their shot before he’s done with his lhw career.
Bones is prob as big as fedor, def. taller and longer but most of all bones stays out of range the whole fight until he knows he has already won , and then he just pulls guard or something.
Im not talking about weight he is just a much larger fighter than prob anyone hendo has ever fought that is worth a shit.
You have to remember that he has already completely dominated a lot of fighters with hall of fame careers, Shogun, Machida, Rampage, Rashad.Although I wont say its the only reason but his height and length are def. the biggest reasons he has won any of these fights. Everyone of these matchups his opponent looks like a midget in there. Every single one of those fighters has beaten nearly everybody they have ever faced and yet Jon “Bones” Jones beats them easily I wonder why.(Cuz he is friggin huge)
I hope hendo just eats a couple punches to get in there and drop a bomb on Jones” chin and puts him out too, but this is what we have to hope for every fight its ridiculous.
You have to realize that Jones knows that is what hendo wants to do too, he is just going to constantly move away.
@Kobe: you do know that Henderson had a horrible time cutting weight for that title fight and Shields still had a tough time with him. With doesn’t say much for Shields…
In any case, I believe Henderson will have just as tough a time getting inside with Jones as Evans did….
point taken but he still says he can drop down to fight silva so he can’t be that big
When is the last time hendo wasn’t gassed in a fight that went the distance? This ‘strategy’ of charging in with his ‘iron’ chin and fighting jones inside/with the clinch/landing the right hand is great except Greg Jackson may realize that this is his gameplan. We will see jones using his footwork and not allow hendo inside(See condit Diaz). Hendo will get tired and hold his hands at his waist and it will be another notch in the belt for jones. I hope I’m wrong and it’s a great war but…
