Strikeforce “Melendez vs. Thomson”: Stewart Left Without An Opponent After Riggs Fails To Be Cleared

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jun 27, 2008 at 11:00 am ET8 Comments

Luke StewartJoe Riggs has been removed from tonight’s Strikeforce “Melendez vs. Thomson” card after he failed to be cleared for the bout by the California State Athletic Commission.

UFC veteran Drew Fickett had agreed on short notice to fight in place of Riggs against middleweight prospect Luke Stewart but Maximum Fighting Championships officials have vetoed the bout according to MMAJunkie.com. Fickett is scheduled to fight Ryan Ford at MFC 17 on July 25th and, as part of the agreement for the main event bout, Fickett can not fight within 45-days of the event without permission from the promotion.

MMARated.com is reporting that Riggs was not cleared for the bout because he had taken Percocet three days ago and informed the CSAC of his use of the prescribed drug during pre-fight medicals.

Stewart has been scratched from the card after the promotion was unable to secure another opponent for the bout.

So then..is Fickett out against Ryan Ford? I wanted to see that fight!

  • Dannyboy says:

Doesn’t Percocet leave your system in 3 days? Perhaps if it had been 4 he would have been able to fight. Too bad for Riggs.

  • rutdog says:

I’m looking forward to Ryan Ford and Fickett if it ever happens. I’m not sure what’s goin on with fickett. He has rumors of fights every week, but 9 out of 10 get canned.

  • KOuch says:

1 of 2 things needs to happen here. Either the fighters have to start using their brains a little more and planning ahead or the fighters need more severe punishment holding them accountable for screwing up the fight card. When a replacement fighter cannot be found, the fans are let down and even worse, a fighter who trained his ass of cannot show his hard work to the fans and opponent. Sucks that Riggs blew it…..He should have known better. This is happening more and more.

  • zac says:

I totally agree KO, and I think the latter suggestion would force the fighters to be smarter.

I really dont understand how people like Dana White allow Franca, Sherk, Sylvia, etc…all these people that test positive for roids or whatever random medication to fight after being suspended for such a short time. He talks smack about Kimbo being a “freakshow” and the UFC will never go “freakshow” but then he has fighters test postivie for roids! There has to be severe punishment for cheating the fans out of an honorable fight.

Wtf percocets a pain killer not steroids. That’s just whack

  • Dietrich says:

Sounds like Riggs is on the back end of a career if hes hitting the pills that close.

  • JAI says:

Yeah sounds like Riggs is on his way out! Besides, everytime I see him fight, he always gets handled easily. He may need to go ahead and hang’em up.
