Just days after Super Fight League 2, Super Fight League has announced the main event for their next event, as Super Fight League 3 will be headlined by a heavyweight battle between Bobby Lashley and James Thompson. The event takes place at the Indra Gandhi Indoor Complex in New Delhi, India on May 6th.
Last weekend’s Super Fight League 2 event saw Todd Duffee earn his first victory in over two years, as he defeated Neil Grove in just over 30 seconds. The event also included notable matchups such as Alexander Shlemenko defeating Ikuhisa “Minowaman” Minowa, and Ryan Healy defeating Paul Kelly in a lightweight showdown.
Lashley (7-1) last fought in November, defeating Karl Knothe to earn the Shark Fights heavyweight title. The Strikeforce veteran won his first fight with the organization, defeating Wes Sims. He was then upset by Chad Griggs in his second fight. Lashley went into the fight a big favorite, but Griggs was much faster than the former WWE wrestler. Exhausted after two rounds, Lashley was unable to fight on into the third round. He was released from the organization after the fight, as he wanted to maintain splitting his time between pro wrestling and mixed martial arts. He has won his last two MMA fights since that release.
He will take on Thompson (17-14-1NC), who fought in the main event at Super Fight League 1 in March. At the event, which took place in Mumbai, Thompson defeated fellow Pride veteran Bob Sapp. After taking down Sapp in the first round, Sapp tapped out due to an apparent leg injury. This gave Thompson his second victory in his last three fights. This followed a run where he lost 12 of his previous 15 fights.
Other matchups announced for the show include:
Light heavyweight: Trevor Prangley vs. Baga Agaev
Middleweight: Doug Marshall vs. Zelg Galesic
Women’s Featherweight: Lena Ovchynnikova vs. Joanne Calderwood
The event will air live on SFL’s YouTube channel, which has also aired the previous two events.
