Report: Diaz, Noons Will Not Fight At July 26th EliteXC CBS Event

Nick DiazNick Diaz, who was recently pulled from a DREAM welterweight title bout in anticipation of an EliteXC lightweight championship rematch against KJ Noons, will not fight Noons on the July 26th EliteXC CBS card according to MMAMania.com. Diaz, however, is still expected to fight at the event ,which will reportedly take place in his hometown of Stockton, California, though his opponent for the fight is not yet known.

Diaz (17-7), a WEC, PRIDE, and UFC veteran, has won six of his last eight bouts including a gogoplata submission victory over ranked lightweight Takanori Gomi that was later ruled a no contest due to a failed drug test. His recent wins include an EliteXC debut victory over Mike Aina, a DREAM debut TKO win over Katsuya Inoue, and, most recently, a third-round TKO of Mushin Corbbrey at a June 14th EliteXC event. His only loss over the eight-bout span came against Noons.

Noons (7-2) defeated Diaz via first-round technical knockout due to cuts in their first meeting last-November to claim the EliteXC lightweight title. A winner of his last three straight bouts, Noons last fought on June 14th defending his title with a 48-second TKO of Yves Edwards. After the bout Diaz enterered the cage and confronted Noons in hopes of receiving a rematch for the lightweight championship.

It appeared Diaz was going to get his wish in the headline bout of the July CBS card, but it now appears he will now face another opponent in July and, barring a loss, fight Noons later in the year, possibly on EliteXC’s third CBS card.

anyone know why he was pulled from the main event against noons. it sucks but maybe they are just giving noons a break he just had a fight. the rematch should be very good.

    makes a lot of sense…..

  • Dietrich says:

Nick gets hosed again…Two title fights lost in one week…

  • Dannyboy says:

Yeah wouldn’t be fair for a champion to be forced to fight that soon after an incredible win over an extremely talented fighter. I hope Noons trains a lot in standup and submission defense. Diaz may be “The Dick” but he can fight.

  • Mike says:

My guess is that Noons wouldn’t take the fight. He’s been living off his “victory” over Diaz, which was actually just a b.s. stoppage. I’m sure he feels that he needs more time to prepare Diaz but it’s garbage if he’s not willing to take the fight & Diaz is…they both just fought with Diaz going into the 3rd round and not being able to make weight while Noons’ fight only lasted 48 seconds with no injuries…I seriously doubt that Diaz would be 100% for the fight & Noons would have an advantage but Nick still wants the fight…I have a lot of respect for Diaz & his willingness to fight anyone @ any date. If they’re not going to match him with Noons, EliteXC should leave Diaz off this card & allow him to fight for the Dream title.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

OUCH DIAZ…. HE WITHDREW AND NOW THIS ONE ISN’T GONNA HAPPEN.

  • Kris Karkoski says:

I have a few theories on all of this. The first is that Noons declined the bout because he’s injured, needs more time to prepare, or something of that nature. The second is that EliteXC wants Diaz to fight on primetime once so casual fans know him then he will fight Noons for the title.

That said, if it’s the latter I’m expecting a weak opponent to be picked so Diaz will look good on TV and I also feel that, if this does end up in Stockton, we could see Noons enter the cage and accept a fall title bout much like Nick confronted Noons in his home arena.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

    KRIS THAT SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT….

BUT THE MORE THIS ORGANIZATION PUTS TOGETHER EVENTS THE MORE IT ALL LOOKS PLANNED.

  • KOuch says:

    Kris,

It’s probably a little of both with a little more to it…..if that makes any sense. I think you are absoulutely right about getting Diaz better known to the general public by putting him on the next televised card. Without a doubt the guy is a character. Diaz’s personality and vocabulary are perfect for Elite XC to use as one of the faces of their promotion.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

AS ANYONE HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT TITO AND WHAT HES GONNA DO YET…

    IS HE GOING TO ELITEXC?

  • Kris Karkoski says:

KOuch – Definitely. There’s a handful of reasons that likely all played a part in this fight not happening next month and I listed two I feel could be the largest contributing factors with getting Diaz exposure at the top of my list.

  • Kris Karkoski says:

YZFOXRACING – I haven’t heard much about Tito at all. Last I heard he was talking with EliteXC and Affliction as well as looking into starting his own promotion.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

    OH WOW STARTING HIS OWN?

    THANKS MAN

  • KOuch says:

Tito needs to stick to fighting. I know he is an idiot from reading some of his letters, opinions, articles…..whatever I should call them. He is not a smart person and his attempt at starting his own promotion is a terrible idea. If he could somehow jump on board Elite or Affliction an do more than fight, I think he could serve a better purpose and help himself oppose to running his own promotion.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

I THINK HE JUST NEEDS TO JUST STRAIT UP FIGHT. AND NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE BUT THAT.HE’LL PROBABLY END UP COMMENTATING WITH GOLDBERG…

  • Dannyboy says:

Agreed KOuch… Tito did quite a bit back in the day bringing his name into the forefront of the UFC…however the spout with Liddell left him weak and he continues to be so he should try for a non fight spot on EliteXC or (most likely) Affliction…but he better not act like the spoiled sport he tends to be.
