After being unable to attend UFC on Fox 2 in January, WWE wrestler CM Punk is hoping he will be able to corner Chael Sonnen at UFC 147 in Brazil in June. The wrestler expressed interest in cornering the UFC middleweight and friend in Sonnen, who will face UFC champion Anderson Silva at the event on June 23rd in Rio de Janeiro.
CM Punk, a Chicago native, was unable to corner Sonnen during Sonnen’s last fight due to unannounced circumstances. While he admits the chances are slim, CM Punk does state that he is still very interested in helping out his friend. He spoke with ESPN, and discussed his intentions.
“I would love to be down there in Brazil, literally, in Chael’s corner,” said Punk. “Because that just seems like my kind of environment, you know. I’d love to start a riot with my homeboy [Sonnen].”
Sonnen has yet to discuss the situation, but he did state his support for the decision prior to UFC on Fox 2, where he defeated Michael Bisping to earn the title shot.
With CM Punk being unable to participate in an event taking place in his hometown, it seems unlikely that he will be able to attend an event that is over 4000 miles away. But for now, the possibility does remain just that, a possibility.
