I heard the UFC could not run Pride as a business the way they originally intended to, because of some illegal business practices that the former Pride owner were into....something about being tied to the Japanese Mob or something like that which made it impossible for the UFC to run Pride as Pride so that started trying to individually sign fighters to UFC and WEC contracts.
