Longtime middleweight contenders are set to square off at UFC on FOX 3, as Alan Belcher will take on Rousimar Palhares when they enter the Octagon on May 5th at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The matchup was announced by Dana White today on twitter.
Belcher (17-5) will be returning to the cage for the second time since an eye injury kept him out of action for over sixteen months. Due to a detatched retina, Belcher underwent multiple surgeries during the time off. He returned to action in September 2011, defeating Jason MacDonald at UFC Fight Night 25. He holds an 8-4 record in the UFC, which includes victories over Ed Herman, Jorge Santiago, and Patrick Cote.
Palhares (14-3) returns to action following his second career “Submission of the Night” performance. A Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Palhares is becoming well known for his arsenal of heel hook submissions. “Toquinho” will enter the cage sporting a three fight win streak. His only two losses in the UFC are to former title contenders Dan Henderson and Nate Marquardt.
This will be Palhares’ first fight in New Jersey since being suspended for 90 days for failing to release a submission in his win over Tomasz Drwal at UFC 111 in March 2010.
The card will be headlined by lightweight contenders Nate Diaz and Jim Miller. Also featured on the card will be a welterweight showdown between Johny Hendricks and Josh Koscheck, and a heavyweight battle between Pat Barry and Lavar Johnson.
