Report: UFC Planning July 19th Event; Wanderlei Silva vs. Brandon Vera May Headline
Not to be outdone by an upstart promotion’s inaugural fight card, the UFC is rapidly planning a July 19th event that would air on Spike TV opposite of Affliction “Banned”. Sherdog.com broke news of the event late Sunday.
Here’s a snip from the report:
The proposed event would take place the same evening that popular clothing line entrepreneurs Affliction will make their foray into the pay-per-view market with “Banned,” its first MMA event at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Zuffa’s impromptu event, which is being pulled together on five weeks’ notice, is tentatively scheduled to be held in Las Vegas.
Studied strikers Wanderlei Silva and Brandon Vera have been approached to clash in a light heavyweight main event, though other combinations of one or both of these fighters are also being considered.
Wanderlei Silva (32-8-1) snapped a three-fight losing streak with a 36-second knockout of Keith Jardine at UFC 84 in May.
Brandon Vera (8-2), who would be making his UFC light heavyweight debut in the bout, is coming off of back-to-back losses including a controversial first-round TKO loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 85 earlier this month.
Affliction “Banned” will be headlined by a WAMMA heavyweight championship bout between top heavyweights Fedor Emelianenko and Tim Sylvia. Several of the events bouts will be broadcast live on FSN while the main card, which also features Andrei Arlovski vs. Ben Rothwell, Josh Barnett vs. Pedro Rizzo, Mike Whitehead vs. Renato “Babalu†Sobral, and Matt Lindland vs. Fabio Negao, will be broadcast on pay-per-view.

How much is affliction going to cost? I might have to tape UFC this time. I’ve never seen Fedor live, kinda want to check him out. From what i’ve seen on video he doesn’t impress me that much.

Maybe the big announcement is more fight nights and this will be the first one to start them off. Sounds badass and Silva vs Vera is definitely out of left field.

Don’t really get this fight. If Vera wins is he going to get a title shot……… I doubt it, i’d say he’d still be behind Chuck, Machida, Evans & Thiago Silva in the pecking order but I suppose a win would put him in the mix whereas as if he loses where does he go then…..Afflication perhaps? Whereas when Wand knocks him out, so what, he ’s beat a guy who then lost his last 3 fights. This fight presents oppotunity for Vera & some punching practise for Wand

This card being thrown together on short notice is the EXACT reason we need competition in MMA. We’re going to have 2 fights instead of one now! Not to mention one is free! Those of you “UFC ONLY” kitties should start seeing the light now.

Vera will have the advantage against Wand at 205. You would think he will be stronger than most 205ers which could spell trouble all LHWs. My only concern is, will the weight loss leave him startched and drained? If so, Wand KO’s him visciously.
Sounds like it would be a free card, but what other fights are going to be on the card? There would have to be so more quality fights in order for it really compete with the Affliction card. In my opinion, Fedor-vs- Sylvia is bigger than Silva-vs-Vera. Now, the fact that Silva-Vera will be free does make a lot of difference, but I just really want to know what other fights they have lined up for the card.

I was married the day of the Lidell-Jackson fight so my reception was going on during the fight…
LUCKILY! The place we reserved for our reservation was 1/2 reception hall and 1/2 bar and the bar had ordered the PPV!!! Just my luck right! I did make my wife wait about 2 minutes to “enter” our reception which was just enough time to see the KO.

Dana White does not give a **** about The Donald. Donald and money do not mean Affliction knows how to successfully run a MMA promtion. Donald is in it for the money not the love of the sport. Don’t be surprised when he rides off into the sunset within the next few years after he makes a quick buck. The UFC turned MMA mainstream and is nearing UFC 100.
Tell me what there is to be insecure about with Affliction when you are the UFC a now billion dollar company? How is the UFC going to lose money by putting on a free fight night with Silva and Vera? We don’t even know the other fighters on the card yet! Short notice doesn’t mean ****! These guys are constantly training and anyone who wants to prove they are the best will step in and be ready. Affliction’s near monopoly of the HW division does not leave me curious. Personally, it leaves me in fear of buying a PPV because I might fall asleep watching slow paced matches. If Sylvia has his way that weekend you know what you are paying $40+ for? I’ll tell you:

Sounds exciting. I stand by this: The UFC has the vast majority of talent in the world of MMA. I’m not paying $40 for a Sylvia PPV when I can see the talents of Silva for free.

KOuch i totally agree with u that silvia is the worlds most boaring fighter, the only reason i can stand 2 watch his fights is because i hang on 2 the glimmer of hope his fat @$$ will get knocked out, but fedor will really take it to him and i dont think tim can make this a boaring fight fedor is way stronger and he will have his way with silvia, but i will be excited to see wanderlei fight he puts on a good show no matter what and ive always like brandon vera (except when he failed to deliver on my dream of seeing silvia get KO’d by a high kick lol) but jpm was right there really isnt much in this for wanderlei

I wish I did work for the UFC. Insecure is 100% the wrong word. The reason for the fight card on short notice is to send a clear message to Affliction. “Don’t F with the powers that be.” Affliction got itself banned from selling merchandise and advertising at UFC and Elite XC events for their shady antics. Regardless of how many people were getting the PPV, this is going to hurt the overall PPV sales Affliction was planning on seeing. It’s about payback not insecurity. Why see one? Well, one costs $40 and has herpes. The other is a beautiful and free thing. If the sport, country, and world last long enough, Dana will go down in history for being the leading force who put MMA on the map. He is a saviour to the sport. I don’t recall the Donald being any part of MMA except investing to make money. Sounds like boxing……So in conclusion I love burritos and the UFC is rather GODLY.(thank you Dana) Just take a look at how the UFC handles little puppies like Affliction while they are trying to get a start in life. Insecure? NO! Punishing like a true GOD? YES! Hell, the UFC didn’t have to do a thing to the IFL and look what’s happening to those poor guys…..it’s scary. Don’t mess wth the UFC, it’s like playing with haunted firey herpes.

Why see one when you can see them both? Oh I don’t know, maybe $40 to watch an unproven organization. I think it would change the game a little. Odds are if there was nothing else going on July 19th I would try to get some people to go in on ordering Affliction. But if the fighters I actually want to see are fighting…….

pff this ufc card is not worth missing Affliction’s first ppv. the ufc and dana had this coming when they could not land fador. now they toss a rather small card for free on spike, its cool that Wanderlei Silva is on the card but that does not make it worth missing the Real Heavy Weight Champ FADOR of the world till proven otherwise! and after this fight it will just add hype for the randy fight whenever or ever that fight happens. this is a good this for the sport i hope this ppv is going to be huge because it will make the ufc work hard to stay number 1 just like the good old days when the ufc was the under dog and pride was on top and the ufc worked hard to become the best! its good for the fan i say watch Affliction and tell the ufc give us the fights we want to see!

I’d love to see Vera vs Silva. How can you call the card small when they have not even announced more fights? The UFC always delivers. Even the last fight card in England turned out dandy when everyone was bashing it. I thought the spelling was Fedor not Fador. Maybe I am wrong but just thought I’d throw that out there since he is the reason you will be spending $40 on a PPV. You do know his opponent is Tim Sylvia right? I can just see Tim in an epic battle. Enjoy.

It saddens me deeply to hear anyone say they’d rather watch ufc over the greatest fight card in history at banned. and how are people so ignorant against some of the best fighters in the world on that card, fedors practicall unbeaten, barnett beat couture, arlovskis on it, silvia, rizzo, both emlienko’s!! this is the most stacked heavy weight card ever, then u got belfort, sobral, rogerio, lindland! .for those who say i dunno who these people are. u should seruiosly spend some time finding out cause if u keepletting ur ignorance control ur decisions, ufc will eventually dominate and stop many many great fights froim ever happenieng. like couture vs fedor, or silva vs roy jones
Sylvia’s gonna get beat so bad. Vera too, UFC just want to pave the way for a Wandi v Rampage title match.
The Affliction card does look sweet though, can’t wait to see Barnett, Lindland and Bobalou back in action, all 3 of them are sorely underrated. We’ll have to see what UFC can rustle up but it’s definately good that there’s more competition in the MMA market. None makes a very good point – we don’t want to end up with the UFC a bloated monopoly
