Ahead of the second UFC on Fox event this Saturday, UFC President Dana White announced today that UFC on Fox 3 will take place on May 5 in New Jersey and will feature a showdown between top lightweights Nate Diaz and Jim Miller.
White confirmed that UFC on Fox 3 will take place at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey on May 5th, the same night as a major boxing match featuring Flory Mayweather much like the UFC’s Fox debut in November, which preceded Pacquiao/Marquez III.
Miller (21-3) just posted his eighth win in his last nine matches after submitting Melvin Guillard in the first round of the UFC on FX 1 main event last Friday. A native of New Jersey, Miller also fought on the two most recent cards held in the state, with wins over Kamal Shalorus at UFC 128 last year and Mark Bocek at UFC 111 in 2010.
Diaz (15-7) is coming off of arguably the most impressive victory of his career, as he defeated Donald Cerrone at UFC 141 in December. Diaz, who returned to the lightweight division in September, is now sporting a two fight win streak after a 2-2 record at welterweight.
With Frankie Edgar defending the lightweight title against Ben Henderson at UFC 144 on February 25th in Japan, this matchup could possibly determine the number one contender. No other matchups were announced for the event, but Diaz vs. Miller is unlikely to be the headliner.
This will be the third straight year the UFC has held an event just outside New York City following UFC 111 and UFC 128 at the nearby Prudential Center in Newark. As the UFC continues to push for legalizing MMA in the state of New York, the organization routinely returns to New Jersey in hopes of demonstrating the money an event in New York City could bring.
