Dana White Talks Next Fights for UFC Champs St-Pierre, Silva, and Jones

Posted by on Jan 21, 2012 at 10:38 pm ET19 Comments

UFC President Dana White discussed the next fights for UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, middleweight champ Anderson Silva and light heavyweight champion Jon Jones with Fuel TV following Friday’s UFC on FX 1 event.

Jones is expected to headline April’s UFC 145 event in Atlanta with his challenger decided by next Saturday’s UFC on Fox 2 main event between Rashad Evans and Phil Davis. If Evans beats Davis and isn’t injured he’ll earn a long awaited matchup with his former teammate Jones, while Dan Henderson would likely challenge Jones for the belt if Davis wins.

The next shot at Anderson Silva will be on the line when Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping square off at UFC on Fox 2, but Sonnen has expressed doubts that Silva will rematch him after nearly dethroning him in their first meeting in 2010. However, White “guaranteed” that Silva would fight Sonnen again this summer should he beat Bisping next Saturday and that the matchup would likely take place at a soccer stadium in Silva’s home country of Brazil.

Finally, Georges St-Pierre’s recovery from knee surgery is well ahead of schedule and the welterweight champion could return as early as this summer, especially if Nick Diaz claims the interim title over Carlos Condit at UFC 143 early next month.

And I know it is Chael talking but if Silva were to actually say no to fighting him… I hope Dana would strip a champion for saying no to a fight period. But I only imagine that he will just pay him more to take it. ughh politics.

  • MMAgoonie says:

LOL @ “Clown.” Sonnen doesn’t bother me at all – I take what he says with a grain of salt. But what does irritate me is the people that are stupid enough to listen to Sonnen & take him seriously. What abunch of morons. Silva will beat Sonnen again, deal with it. And LOL @ people saying Miller deserves a shot at the winner of Edgar vs Bendo. LMFAO!!! Nobody in the LW division deserves a shot more than Nate Diaz – it’s a fact. And why is Melvin always getting choked out? From now on – when somebody locks in a choke – it should officially be called “getting Melvin’d.” As in, on Feb 4th: “Ohhhh **** son!!! Nick Diaz just Melvin’d Carlos Condit!!!”

    • Clown says:

      @mmagoonie

he doesn’t bother me either. I can accept that the world of entertainment needs “bad guys”

I’m all for the rematch of the 2 and think Chael has a better chance than most seeing that he got sloppy for the last 30 seconds of a fight and got caught.

And what is your reasoning besides your Diaz bandwagon that says he deserves the next shot. I’d go ahead and let Diaz and Miller fight it out for number 1 spot. Diaz doesn’t even know what weight class he wants to fight at.

And yes when he isn’t winning KOoTN Melvin is always getting choked out :) he is one of my all time fav fighters to watch and has overcome a lot of personal issues to put up great fights. His time will come but I was hoping he would stay at Greg Jackson’s camp. I heard he left them before the fight.

    • Mikemac says:

Diaz is probably top 3 LW? Jim miller is also “in the mix”. Now both have subbed Melvin. Both need another solid win before getting a title shot. So these two fighting makes sense to me. But maybe Nate will get to avenge his loss to Maynard. (I haven’t heard much about gray other than his training with Aldo so not sure if he has another fight booked). Edson Barboza is also climbing the ladder.

    • DROCK says:

Really. Did you watch UFC 129? Rory Macdonald whippin the snot out of Diaz.

      • Mikemac says:

I did watch rory slam him like a rag doll. But that was at 170,he is too small to handle the big welterweights. At 155 nate diaz has looked very good, his boxing continues to improve and he is dominating guys. Personally I think Nate is maturing and leaving his thug image behind him(as much as he can anyway). In the past I have sh!t on both diazs’, but I was wrong(at least for nate anyway)

    • Advent says:

Jim Miller has lost two decisions to Ben Henderson and Gray maynard in his last 10 fights, whereas Nate Diaz has lost 5 of his last 10. How is that more deserving? Cause he outboxed Gomi and Cerrone?? No. Not even a little bit. He should fight Edson Barboza nextm then start talking about title hunts.

Oh, and LOL @ you for thinking your post was sharp-witted, funny and snarky.

  • j1ufc says:

i would be more concerned with chael saying no to drugs than silva saying no to the fight. ps what a contender match. 1 dimensional bisping(who isnt even that good at striking) against dry hump sonnen. munoz would have outwrestled and probably won making for a new match-up. now we get to see a rematch with cheat. oops i mean chael. i will be in the 3rd row to catch his head when silva kicks that fat mouth off his shoulder

    • Rex says:

Brian Stann knows Sonnen doesn’t dry hump.

      • Advent says:

        @Rex,

Its just someone who’s never done or accomplished anything in life trying their hardest to bring another person down. A person that beat the $hit out of their idol for 22 minutes. They get nervous. We should let them drown in a pool of their own loneliness and sorrow.

  • Devin says:

Ha ha ha oh mmagoonie…with that kind of mind blowing insight I can only imagine you in your mansion in Vegas…that is, if you actually put your money where your mouth is. Oh wow nate diaz gets chased out of 170, wins 2 fights and is contender? I love how you call that a fact…That you just made up. Don’t let your crush on Nick carry over on to nate. I love how you guys sleep on condit…he’s been in the ufc dominating top talent while Nick has been in the sf. Nuff said. He could easily win, but you are smoking crack if you think he’s just gonna waltz in and choke out condit (although I love your melvin’d name for all future choke outs).

Anyway, miller, nate, guida, pettis, jlau and anyone else you could name are all at least one to two fights away from title fight. Which is why I think the ufc will do the perfect thing and let them work out next contender, and bring over melendez for winner of Edgar/Bendo.

And lastly, there is no sure guarantee that spider beats Sonnen. Everyone deserves an opinion, period. But going around declaring others stupid and all your own opinions god, is silliness.

  • Devin says:

P.s. as much as I love rashad, and think he’s going to crush Davis, and FINALLY get his much deserted title shot, I feel bad for hendo. I so badly wanna see hendo/bones while hendo is still below age 45.

  • Clown says:

I’m confused as to why Davis won’t get a shot if he wins. Is it just because Hendo is a bigger pull at this time? I bet if Davis comes in and destroys Evans (which I don’t see happening quickly) Dana bites his tongue and gives it to him.

  • Aussie Fan says:

I think Jones next fight should be against Hendo as they will have almost had the same time off between fights. Not that i think Evans dosnt deserve the shot if he beats Davis i just think its a matter of timing so each fighter has the same amount of time to prepare, after all it is for a title.I think Jones and Hendo could have fought maybe a couple of weeks after Evans and Davis and the winner of that fight could fight the winner of Hendo and Jones. And i think if Davis does beat Evans he should get the title shot. Why not, they gave Jones the shot at Shogun with little experience and wins over not the highest ranked opponents. And why not give Hendo the shot now, after all Overeem and Diaz both get title shots after only one win in the UFC (not including Diaz’s wins when preiously in the UFC).

  • Devin says:

Aussie you make a great point about Davis, if he miraculously somehow beat rashad you could argue he deserves it. But rashad has been waiting for this title shot since he beat rampage. And as far as hendo, his recent record is so nasty I think he clearly still would stand out above Davis in terms of being more deserving.

Diaz beat an old gomi and cowboy, I don’t think he just gets #1 contender fight just like that. Same with miller, he’s 2 fights removed from losing to Bendo. Miller is a freaking stud and has only 3 losses. The only problem is those 3 are against the top 155ers of the planet. He simply needs to move down. I’d love to see diaz/guida or diaz/maynard rematch. Either of those propel him imo

  • Avatar of RussoC13 RussoC13 says:

I love how everyone is sleeping on my boy Phil Davis.. he has the wrestling and submissions to beat Rashad on the ground, the only thing we haven’t really seen is his standup.. there is no way rashad is gonna just go in there and blow by Davis.. I cant wait for the fight

  • Devin says:

Russo you do make a point that he’s slightly overlooked by us, as even Vegas has him as just a slight underdog +150, but its true, his standup hasn’t been shown, and the sample with old ass lil nog did not look good. Either way I’m so excited for that fight!

  • Devin says:

Different weight class now drock. And I love Macdonald.

Kris I keep hearing guida/maynard, you got anything on that?
