Chuck Liddell vs. Rashad Evans In September At UFC 88

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Jun 13, 2008 at 2:30 pm ET113 Comments

Chuck LiddellTop UFC light heavyweights Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans, who were originally set to clash in the main event of UFC 85 earlier this month, will now square off at UFC 88 on September 6th in Atlanta according to ESPN The Magazine.

“According to a UFC source, he will be Chuck Liddell’s mystery opponent in the organization’s debut in Atlanta. The fight has been agreed to in principle—the only thing left is the paperwork,” said the report.

Their scheduled UFC 85 bout was scratched after Liddell was forced to withdraw due to a torn hamstring. Despite being rescheduled against a new opponent, Evans was eventually pulled from the fight card following an injury to substitute James Irvin, setting up the fall bout against Liddell.

Liddell (21-5), a former UFC light heavyweight champion, defeated Wanderlei Silva via unanimous decision at UFC 79 in December after dropping his 205-pound title to Quinton Jackson and losing to Keith Jardine in back-to-back bouts. He has won eight of his last ten fights.

Evans (11-0-1) appeared on the Ultimate Fighter 2, winning the heavyweight tournament with a finale win over Brad Imes before dropping down to 205-pounds. He next won bouts over Sam Hoger, Stephan Bonnar, Jason Lambert, and Sean Salmon to set up a bout against popular former UFC champion Tito Ortiz. Evans was able to keep his undefeated record intact despite losing the bout on the scorecards after a point deducted from Ortiz for grabbing the fence resulted in the bout being ruled a draw. In his last fight Evans defeated The Ultimate Fighter 3 winner Michael Bisping by unanimous decision at UFC 78 last November.

  • RLT says:

Good, I personally am looking forward to Rashad’s first loss.

  • Gsquat says:

Little typo in previous post. I’m sure by “first loss” you mean “first win over top ten opponent”. It’s ok, it happens to all of us.

  • mman says:

I agree with ‘RLT’ on this one…Chuck will destroy Rashad! Evans may be able to take Chuck down at some point but it wont stay on the canvas for long. Chuck will pick him apart and will secure a TKO victory late in the 2nd or the 3rd. My bet is that it wont go the distance.

YOU ARE FULL OF **** HA HA HA HA…. THAT WAS A GOOD JOKE. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW IN THIS SPORT BUT DON’T PUT MONEY ON IT. RASHAD COULDN’T EVEN BEAT TITO WHO WOULD HAVE WON IF THEY DIDN’T TAKE THE POINT AWAY. THAT WAS NOTHING TO BRAG ABOUT

  • Dannyboy says:

FINALLY… It’s about time that Rashad Evans will be shown for the poor fighter he is. I’m not a huge Chuck fan…but in this fight it’s a no brainer who I will be rooting for. The Iceman has cometh! GET HIM CHUCK!

I have disliked Evans since TUF episode where he was taunting his opponent. Very unclassy and he hasn’t changed much since. He walks around thinking he’s God’s gift to MMA and even the world. Well it’s time for ‘God’s gift’ to be returned the the Wal-Mart from which it came.

  • cvkid says:

Man this is gonna be a good one. I think chuck will pick him apart. Chucks takedown defense is some of the best. Well hopfully chuck will pull this one out 2nd round Tko. But Evans has a chance with the way he’s been fighting.

  • rut says:

rashad is finally going down. how can anyone like this guy. hes probably the most boring fighter in the ufc. beside machida anyways. war iceman

  • Dave says:

I’m convinced most MMA fans and a lot of people in general, just plain don’t like black people

  • YZFOXRACING says:

    CVKID

WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE HAS A CHANE WITH THE WAY HE’S BEEN FIGHTING? HE HASN’T FOUGHT SINCE TITO AND HE FOUGHT LIKE ****. AND THE BISBING FIGHT WASNOT ALL THAT GOOD EITHER… COME ONE MAN

  • JustJoe says:

Personally, I like both these guys. Everyone is hatingon Rashad because of tuf, but he’s grown up since then. I think he would have beat Tito easilyif he would have pressed the action instead of try not to lose. Hopefully he’s learned from that fight. I think this will be a good fight.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

RASHAD IS OK BUT IM FROM NM AND RASHAD FIGHTS OUT OF JACKSONS BUT I JUST DON’T LIKE HIS ATTITUDE. HE THINKS HE CAN’T BE BEAT. CHUCK NEEDS TO BRING HIM DOWN TO EARTH

  • VvV says:

Rashad is a good wrestler. He will not do well against near perfect takedown defense and near perfect MMA kickboxing. think this fight will not boil down to what Rashad does, but what Liddel does. If liddel is on, no matter what Rashad does, he is going to have a bad night.

  • Big Rapper says:

Thats Dana Big Anouncement! Man that sucka is crazy! Announce that Kimbo is joinging ufc punk biotches! Holla!

  • YZFOXRACING says:

BIG RAPPER IS THAT FOR REAL??????????

  • JOHNBOY says:

miss match like i said before chuck will win within the first 3 min anyone who thinks otherwise must be high,

chuck will be champ this time next year!!!!

  • Dirty says:

Chucks beaten the best in the world, i don’t see Rashad posing any serious threats that Chuck hasn’t already handled from other fighters…….

Interesting but at the same time….not.

  • VvV says:

Rashad is a good wrestler. He will not do well against near perfect takedown defense and near perfect MMA kickboxing. think this fight will not boil down to what Rashad does, but what Liddel does. If liddel is on, no matter what Rashad does, he is going to have a bad night.

  • belly says:

i think this is a good fight. we will see where rashad really is. i think he is a good fighter and may pose a few problems for chuck. chuck is favourite but im not too sure it will be an easy night for him.

  • Champagne says:

kimbo would get his ass kicked by clay guida…

  • Nick says:

oh ****. im scared. chuck better step it up. i hope he wins

  • JAI says:

DON’T SLEEP ON RASHARD in the fight! Every time he was expected to loose while on TUF, he surprised everybody and won each and every fight. Alot of people thought he would loose to Tito and to Bisping, but again, he surprised people. Rahard will SHOCK THE WORLD the same way Jardine did last year and win this fight and earn a title shot by doing so. Liddell will go have a rematch with Vanderlei.

  • Flakes says:

so what happens if chuck wins this one? who does he fight next? winner of Rampage and Griffin? Predicting that Rampage wins this fight, who’s next in line for a shot? Thiago Silva? That man is an animal!

  • JustJoe says:

Silva vs Silva with Wandy whooping up on Thiago, i’d like that or Thiago vs Machida, hopefully Machida finally loses.

I’ll predict this right now, Evans and Iceman goes to a decision.

  • Dave5555 says:

Obviously if they stay on their feet, Chuck wins, no issue.
However, it be great to see if Chuck has a ground game. So, if Rashad can make many attempts to take him down, we might actually see a fight.

    That’s his only change.

  • Mike says:

wasn’t the bisping fight a split decision

  • RLT says:

I don’t see a decision in this fight. Considering the past couple of fights for both of these fighters it’s possible, I just think Chuck is going to get the TKO.

  • Hut says:

BTW Evans beat Bisping by split decision..

  • brandon says:

Rashad is a PERFECT match up for Chuck to KO somebody.

Chuck does his best against top grapplers (aside from Rampage)

Chuck KO Tito x2, Rand x2, Bobalu x2, Horn, all top grapplers. His stance is perfect for stuffing the shot and Rashad is very timid to box with people. He looked on the defence against Tito in their whole fight when it was standing (he looked the best from the guard) and with Bisping he never stayed standing much at all. Against Chuck he wont have the reach advantage and so he’ll look to take the fight to the ground and that is exactly what chuck wants him to do. Chuck has fantastic reach and loves to deliver really damaging downward straight punches to a person after he stuffs the shot.

    Rashad gets KO’d round 1

  • cincy says:

chuck will walk thru evans. predicting knockout of the night. evans wont be able to take chuck down, chuck has one of the best takedown defences and will just pick at him til he starts landing those bombs. evans is pretty good but this is chuck’s springboard to fight for the title again. could be rampage again but he’ll have to beat griffin and maybe silva before taking on chuck again.

  • JustJoe says:

That’s what i’m saying. Rashad’s fight vs Tito, he wasn’t pressing the action, but I have to believe he has been working on his stand up since then.

There’s no way he loses in round 1. 5 of his 7 ufc fights have gone the distance, and all 7 have gone to round 2 atleast. I don’t see how I can call him getting ko’d when he’s never been ko’d before, even if it is the Iceman he is fighting. Chuck couldn’t even knockout Keith “Glassjaw” Jardine. I know Rashad has a stronger chin than him.

I still think Chuck will win by decision

  • KOuch says:

As far as history goes, Chuck is the better fighter. Rashad may have a chance because Chuck is older and has had a longer career taking a toll on his body. Skill wise, I got Chuck. I think Chuck is going to be on fire and work his way right back into title contention. It seems more like Rashad is a stepping stone to put Chuck back where he was but at the same time Rashad should not be under estimated. Matt Hughes did not like him at first and then took it back saying, “Rashad is a GOOD fighter.” I take Hughe’s comment to heart being he knows way more than I do. Rashad may be “good” but I think Chuck is “great.” It would be pretty cool to see Chuck and Forrest win so they could have a title match. First TUF winner vs First TUF coach. Go Chuck! I’d hate to see Rashad work his way towards title contention and being ranked by beating Chuck.

  • Mr. Green says:

Rashad is going to get his ass whooped,,,,and that will be fun to watch

  • Mr. Green says:

if chuck fights like he did against Wendal,,there is no 205 out there now that can beat him,,,,,there again if he fights like he did against Keith,,Chuck will get his ass whooped..

  • nev-o says:

all i have to say is everyone will be shocked to see rashad win….so im going to pull for him. just cause i mean liddell is a legend but i think its time the new guys move in beside cote or almeda will get FORRREST cause he will win!!! and machida will fight for the number one contender against…probably thiago silva…ya go MACHIDA

  • nev-o says:

flakes…does listen to anything about the ufc!!!!!! COTE OR ALMAIDA!! O AND JUST JOE LIKE I HAVE SAID HE WAS SICK SICK SICK WHEN HE FAUGHT TITO!!! HE TRAINS WITH NOGERIA AND ANDERSON SILVA!!! THIS GUY IS THE REAL DEAL YOU WILL SEEEEE!!!! HE HAS BEAT TITO HE USE TO BE THE TOP 205 AND HE BEAT THE AFRICAN ASSISAN WHO IS RANKED IN THE TOP TEN!!! GIVE THIS GUY SOMME CREDIT!!! F$ck

  • nev-o says:

    “doesnt” listen

  • Dave, Md says:

Chuck KO’s Evans in 1:29 of the 1st rd.

  • KOuch says:

    nev-o,

Either I am tired and need rest or you need to retype your post. I am confused You said, “cote or almeda will get FORRESST.” Do you mean Cote or Almeida get to fight Forrest Griffin? Maybe I’m wrong but I thought Cote was a MW. Besides, where do Cote and Almeida come into the picture of Rashad and Chuck? Please re-explain your point of view because I am as lost as a 450lbs crippled blind man fighting a 72lbs dwarf.

  • JAI says:

If Liddell beats Evans, I think the UFC willgive him a title shot. Now, personally, I don’t think he should get one, at least not if Rampage is still the champ at that time. If Rampage beats Griffin next month and Liddell beats Evans, then they should put Liddell against Machida with the winner getting the title shot…..Now, if Griffin beats Rampage and Liddell beats Evans, then DEFINITELY get the title shot!….If Evans beats Chuck, then I think he deserves the title shot no matter who wins between Rampage-Griffin in July.

    We will see what happens!

  • JustJoe says:

I think the need a 2nd LHW title. There are so many good guys , that some will wait years to get a chance lol.

  • JustJoe says:

Ok, i’m watching the replay of elite xc on showtime, and I have to say unfortunetly Brett Rogers is going to get ko’d by Kimbo in 2:50 or less in the first round. Murphy nearly ko’d him with that first punch, and Rogers likes to stand up lol.

  • moose says:

second round KO win for chuck!

  • natedogg77 says:

Chuck is my favorite figher and Im not very excited about this match up because I don’t think Evans is a top 10 LHW.

I would much rather see Chuck fight Shogun or Thiago Silva.

  • joe says:

Rashad is one of the most overrated boring fighter in UFC. How can anyone like this guy. He lsot to Tito and Bisping but since he is black they will bend over backwards to give him a chance. I wish they would match ghim agianst Tito and Bisping agian and he would get his ass kicked as he sucks.

  • jeff says:

I have to say that I really like both of these fighters. Why does everybody hate Rashad? I think his attitude has changed since that episode on tuf. I really don’t want him fighting chuck at this point but it is what it is. I think Chuck is washed up. I mean come on he lost to Keith ‘Nobody’ Jardine. I hope he fairs well in the rest of his career but he won’t be the champ again.

  • KOuch says:

Chuck lost to Keith because Keith had a game plan that threw Chuck off bad. Keith is a very good fighter but he has a tender, fragile jaw. Then again, the average human jaw should not be able to take hits from Silva or Houston Alexander the way Keith did and stay concious. I don’t think everyone hates Rashad either. I think the problem is, Rashad gets to face an aging Liddell and if he wins he is in title contention. Rashad should have to fight Liddell and then another top 10 guy to get into contention.

  • JOHNBOY says:

KOuch u dont have to worry bout that chuck will not lose this match

  • lawrence says:

Rashad is a good fighter but he is about to get knocked the f*** out muahahah

  • Dave, Md says:

Liddell will fight for the LHW title in Dec 27 at UFC 91 against Rampage… only thing is the results will be differnt this time Liddell in 2 by TKO

  • nev-o says:

just joe your mental who cares about KIMBO!!!! no one does its staged he will win all his fights against losers!!! its all about the $$$$$$

  • nev-o says:

and no everyone COTE!!!! OR ALMEDA GET THE FIRST TITLE SHOT ITS CALLED NUMBER ON CONTENDER!!!! LISTEN TO THE TV WHEN THEY SAY COTE ALMEDA WILL BE FIGHTING FOR THE CHANCE TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FIGHT THE WINNER OF RAMPAGE FORREST!!! AND LIDDELL LOST TO THE DEAN OF MEAN HAHAHA!! WHO KNOWS MAYBE LIDDELLS IS BECOMING HUGHES THEY BOTH ROCK BUT THEY CANT BANG WITH THE YOUNG GUNS ANYMORE!!!

  • Krav138 says:

Chuck is gonna knock Evans the hell out!

  • Spud says:

    Cote is 185, not 205.

  • buddy says:

nevo dont you read others posts kouch already told you cote and almeida are in a different weight division.

  • Dave, Md says:

I bet Dana white tells everyone on thrusday that a TV deal, Affliction vs. UFC

  • D P says:

i think they will have a super bowl type of ppv at the end of the year with the top champions from each organization to fight one another

  • Dietrich says:

Evans finds a way to win and I think it will continue….

  • Byu Boi says:

From what I have read in everyone elses comments, Evans does not have a chance in hell! Well, it’s not going to be a easy night for Chuck! You can bet that! This match can go either way. Evans imposes his will on Liddell and make Chuck grapple which he can not with Evans or Chuck will go for the quick and early knock out, which will not happen! This match goes to the finally horn and Chuck will win by decision!

  • Rod says:

You guys are talking so much Bull**** about Rashad Evans…Well personally i see NOTHING wrong with his ATTITUDE..He seems like a really nice guy to me…and personally i’ve been waiting along time to see this fight…Rashad Evans is alot like Rampage…but a SMARTER, STRONGER AND FASTER VERSION OF RAMPAGE….Chuck Liddell has proven that he has a very weak chin and Evans has a huge advantage with his age and having a man whose beaten Liddell in his camp (Jardine)…People are on here talking about Liddell’s power..well let me tell you this..Evans has KO power as well…Just ask Brad Imes and Salmon what a punch or kick from Evans will do to you…I’m gonna say Rashad will Knockout chuck in the second round…Liddell has a tendancy to throw a few punches and get tired…Rashad is a much much better boxer than Rampage and Rampage made Chuck look like his ****…I’m gonna say Rashad by a very brutal Knockout in the second…Evans in my opinion is the best Light Heavy weight in the world.

  • Rod says:

When you’ve been KOed before it effects you both physically and mentally…Everyone on here seems to overlook the fact that Liddell has been knocked out or down in his LAST 3 FIGHTS….Rampage KNOCKED HIM OUT, Jardine Dropped him and Silva also Dropped him…Wandy let chuck get up because he wanted to punish chuck…If silva would have jumped all over chuck when he knocked Liddell down…that fight would have turned out different…I see Rashad catching Chuck and believe me when i tell you this…Rashad will catch Liddell and knock him down…Once Liddell is down on the ground…Evans will be all over him…Rashad is gonna beat Chuck…Liddell has NEVER Been a technically sound boxer…He fights with his hands at his waist and Rashad is Technically the fastest and best boxer he’s faced in his career…Evans power is also underrated…Chuck’s chin has been proven to be garbage….Watch….EVANS BY KNOCKOUT.

  • JOHNBOY says:

hey rod did u see the evens tito fight? i respect ur opinion but holy sh*T the best LHW in the world i think not, i cant see evens wanting to bang with chuck if he does hes guna be wakeing up an asking the ref what happend, the best way for evens to win is do what jardine did but i cant see nothing but a chuck win in this fight.

  • Dave, Md says:

    I agree with you Johnboy

I have to say Chuck in 2 (TKO 1:21)

  • Rod says:

It’s hard to go with Chuck especially since he’s been knocked down or out in his last 3 fights….Chuck almost lost his last fight to silva…Like i said if Wand would have jump on Chuck when he hurt him…Wand would have probably won that fight….Rashad will surprise alot of people..

  • mrnice says:

i am shocked that anybody on this thread even gives Rashad a tiny little chance at winning this… what in the world does Evans have over chuck?? striking power? NO, wrestling ability? NO, ground game? neither one has that. lol…. Evans has absolutely a zero chance of winning this fight..
and i am not even a Chuck fan..

  • Rod says:

mrnice….if you weren’t so bias you would see Evans has plenty of advantages over Chuck…So where do you get the feeling that Chuck is a better Wrestler than Rashad? No freaking way is chuck a better wrestler…Rashad is the better Wrestler, Boxer and his Ground and pound game is better…Chuck is an outdated fighter whose never changed his game. His plan is to throw a few punches and hopes he knocks you out….When he’s taken down Liddell doesn’t have a clue what to do… Rampage in the first fight….took him down at will….Couture in the first fight took him down at will….Rashad is much better wrestler than anyone is giving him credit for…Also Evans has very fast and heavy hands…When he connects on Chucks china chin…It’s all over..

  • YZFOXRACING says:

DAM I WOULDN’T BE SURPRISED IF ROD IS RASHAD IN DISCIZE. OR HE JUST WANTS HIS NUTS. BUT COME ON MAN. HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY SAY THAT CHUCK ALMOST LOST THAT FIGHT AGAINST WANDY. DUDE HE DOMINATED. “EVANS” HAS NO SHOT. IM FROM NEW MEXICO AND I SUPPPORT EVERY SINGLE FIGHTER THAT COMES OUT OF JACKSONS. BUT I DON’T SEE ANY POSSIBLE WAY. I WAS NERVOUS FOR THE JARDINE AND CHUCK FIGHT. I KNEW CHUCK WAS GONNA LOSE. BUT IM SORRY DUDE YOUR THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THAT…

  • Rod says:

Yzfoxracing…Dude learn how to spell first and then talk.

  • Monu says:

DONE DEAL… oh man u guys dunno how long i have waited to see this come along… CHUCK IS THE MAN!!!… THE ABSOLUTE POWER OF MMA… He’z GON KNOCK THIS GUY OUTTA HIS SHOES… go Chuck… YOU’Z THE MAN!!!….

  • Fry22 says:

Rod i dont no u but i think that u should follow a sport like gulf buddy because mma is really not youre thing u actually think that Rashad will dominate Chuck wow bro u need counciling. Youre going on about how good of a wrestler Rashad is please the guy lays on people when hes on the ground and trust me Chuck is the better wrestler if u would have seen him in collage when he wrestled D-1 at Cal Poly you would have a hole new perspective on the mans wrestling ability but why wrestle when u have the ability to drop any fighter in the world with one good write hand. Chuck will KO/TKO Reshad yah Reshad is a tuff dude but he dont even belong in the Octagon with a fighter like Chuck The Icemna Liddell.

  • Fry22 says:

Chuck Will beat Rashad take the tital from Forrest and then defend it against a couple of guys and then probably retire but he will leave in style as the true champion that he is.

When all said and Done Chuck Liddell 26-5 Champion

  • Fry22 says:

mrnice and i are on the same page but im a huge Chuck fan chuck is just flat out better then Rashad and im telling u chuck is hungry again he has those loses out of his systen he beat the hell out of Wanderlia Silva he will tear threw Evans and anyone else they put in front of him on his way back to that belt and i hope we see Chuck and Thigo Silva fight so once he beats him their will be no doubt in anyones minds about who the best 205 in the world is.

Liddell Wins By TKO in the seacond

  • Rod says:

It’s funny how everyone is jumping back on the Chuck Bandwagon…Liddell has been on the down slide for quite awhile. Everyone of his opponents were carefully selected for him by Dana while and staff…As soon as they put him in there with a guy who had a decent stand up, could wrestle and hungry…Liddell dropped quicker than a blonde on prom night…Anyone who says Evans doesn’t have chance to beat Liddell surely doesn’t know **** about MMA…ANYONE ON ANY DAY CAN BE KNOCKED OUT…Rashad is faster, stronger and hungrier…Liddell fans are stupid much like the old Mike Tyson fans…Holding on to something that is no longer there. Evans training partner Keith Jardine…put a whooping on Chuck and Jardine has no skills…I said this along time ago…Rashad will KO Liddell brutally in the first or second Round…

  • Rod says:

I wonder what these racist haters are gonna say when Liddell is on his back again looking up at another black man. Someone on here had the nerve to say Chuck as a near perfect stand up game…LOL…Yeah right…All chuck liddell does is hold his hands down protecting his nipples…Rashad Evans is the most underrated fighter in the game today…Underestimate him….I hope Chuck does the same….because when he does…he will get KTFO…same way a few others have…The Brad Imes fight should have ended in a knockout and i can see Liddell going down the same way Shawn Salmon did….with his toes curled up…lol…I can’t wait for this fight….Rashad all the ****ing way.

  • MMA_Metalhead says:

Rod, personally i think your just hoping on the MMA bandwagon. If u watched the wandy fight, chuck isnt on the slide. until he loss to rampage (which is slightly more than a year ago) he was considered one of the best pound for pound fighters. Yes i know anyone can be knocked out on anyday. And yes rashad is faster and maybe stronger. That doesnt mean much. Rich franklin is definatly stronger than a. silva. silva beat him. Rampage is definatly stronger than forrest. forrest beat him. Like YOU said, its MMA. Now lets look at THE FACTS. Rashad has i think 8 ufc fights. 2 were finished early by KO. 2 were finished by uni. decision. The others were ALL split decision, meaning he didnt win all the judges minds. Rashad lays on most of his opponents. If u think 5 ‘11 rahsad will head kick 6 ‘2 chuck like sean salmon (who btw had a seizure in his last fight after KO, not that an impressive of a win for rashad) your out of your mind. Now lets look at chuck. 13 of his 21 wins are by KO or TKO, more than all the fights in rashads record i think. Chucks sprawl prevented tito from taking him down completely.
It also frustrated corture. Saying chucks stand up isnt one of the bests is your opinion. Personally, with all the KO’s and TKO’s he has i think its pretty good. Chuck has traditionally dominated wrestlers. And u said jardine messed up chuck, no he didnt mess him up. he won by split decision. And if your going to play the “o jardine beat chuck, and jardine trains with rashad” game, well wandy ko’d jardine, and chuck beat wandy so i just countered that theory of yours. Rahsad couldnt beat tito standing. Hes not probably not going to beat chuck standing. Rahsad hasnt shown too much power in his hands, chuck has shown he can knock out the best with his hands. Rahsad is a wreslter. Chuck breaks wrestlers. Chucks sprawl is legendary, rahsad will have trouble with it. If he takes chuck down, chucks just as good at getting back up. Rahsad is young and chuck is getting older, i realize that. Rod, u saying chuck is going to get KTFO is just u jumping on the Rashad bandwagon. Rod, how about u learn more about the fighters, and MMA in general, before u call everyone a bunch of racists for saying chuck will win, when they are only sayikng the truth. And i love black people. All of my favorite musicians are/ wouldnt be where they are without black people.

  • Cal says:

When you look at the way this fight is going to match-up, it appears that Rashad doesnt have a chance. He won’t be able to take Chuck down, and he will get dominated on the feet. The only thing that gives Rashad a chance (albeit a small one)is his resilience; he always finds a way to win (or at least tie).

Rod I think you may be pointing your racist-happy fingers in the wrong direction. Truth is Dana White designed this fight to be a stepping stone for Chuck. Not because Rashad isnt good (because he is), but because it is just a terrible match-up. If Rashad were to fight for the championship now I think he would beat Griffin, or if he fought Chuck’s projected opponent (Hua) he would have won. This is just another one of Dana White’s ploys to propel his favorite fighter forward, and get him a title shot. I say put him up against Anderson, who would be a true challenge, and if he wins that then give him his title shot.

  • Rod says:

MMA metalhead….I will asnwer you first……Chuck Liddell is Dana Whites golden boy…He was put as the face of the UFC to help the company advance to the next level and it’s worked…But Chuck Liddell has never been a top 5 fighter in my opinion and i’ve been following and practicing MMA since the beggining. All of Liddells fights were against Wrestler who had very limited skills as a boxer…And for your information Randy Couture did take Chuck down and he finished Chuck on the ground…Rampage did the same thing to him in pride and the UFC…SO DON’T COME ON HERE SAYING IT’S TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR RASHAD TO GET CHUCK ON THE GROUND…Because it’s not…It’s happened before and it’s gonna happen again. I’m not going to argue back and forth with you guys about your little hero…Facts are simple…Jardine should have gotten a Unamimous against chuck…But one judge had a hard on for Liddell much like you do…As for Rashad…Evans has beaten everyman UFC Management put in front of him. Everyone one of his fights that went to a decison should have been a Unamimous…He totally dominated Bonnar, He totally Dominated Bisping…The fight with Brad Imes should have been stopped…If Liddell would have had a man hurt that bad i bet the ref would have stopped it…But as i say…Keep on doubting Rashad…He’s answered the call every time he’s been asked too…..And i don’t see him stopping now. In the Tito fight…Ortiz commented saying “he was holding the fence to keep from being taken down…He said if your not cheating your not trying to win.” You fellas might not respect Evans now…but you will after he whips chucks ass…

  • Rod says:

Cal….So your saying that Chuck has a better stand up than Rashad…lol dude do you know anything about boxing or Kick Boxing…Just because Chuck has more Knock out victories than Rashad doesn’t mean he has the better stand up…Dude I started training Kick Boxing under one of the greatest unknown kickboxers to ever live. World Champion Oliver Miller of Columbus Mississippi. So Kickboxing is in my blood and i’ve been doing this for more than 26 years…So i think i would know if a guy has a good stand up or not.. Chuck liddell leaves his hands down around his nipples and he leaves his whole face opens when he throws his punches…Rashad will catch him..Nuff said on that..

Now if you think Evans wrestling skills isn’t good enough to take Liddell down…Then shame on you…Both Couture, Matt Hughes, Tito and Rampage has went on record to say that Rashad Evans is one of the best wrestlers they have ever trained with..Everybody he’s fought he’s been able to take them down…And i don’t see an old chuck being able to keep him off him for 3 rounds…It’s not happening.

Rod I agree that Rashad has been able to take everyone down, but Couture and Ortiz took down almost everyone they fought besides Liddell(although I will give you the fact that Couture took him down first fight).

Since we’re quoting fighters, Couture said that Liddell’s unorthodox style is very effective and its hard to predict when and where the punches are coming from. He also said Chuck is able to generate a lot of power the way he fights. So the fact that he doesnt use your traditional boxing/kickboxing style has no bearing on whether his stand-up is effective. Other standup fighters such as vanderlei, vitor, vernon white etc. who have felt his power would probably agree with Couture and disagree with you.

But even if we pretended that Chuck’s standup wasnt good, are you saying that Rashad’s is great? He has knocked out some nobody on his feet, besides that all his fights have been on the ground.

Im not counting Rashad out. He is a better athlete than Chuck in every way, and as you say he is young and in his prime whereas Chuck is not.

In all honesty, I hope your right. I have been a fan of Rashad since TUF eventhough I hate the showboating (which appears to have stopped). If I were a betting man, I might bet on Rashad because the bookies know as most of us do that the odds are strongly in Chuck’s favor, and you will probably get like 4 to 1 on your money.

  • MMA MetalHead says:

Rod, for your info, Chuck did do kickboxing and i think he went undefeated in it. #2 so what if u do kickboxing. There are other styles of standup. Chuck has a unique on no one else does. Who are u to judge it? It may not be a good kick boxing style, but it seems to be effective. And i never said corture didnt take him down. And he didnt finish chuck on the ground either. He dropped chuck and the ref called it. Rashads standup isnt great. Hes a good wrestler, and saying a wrestlers standup has improved doesnt mean much. Rashad has knocked out no names. Guys who cannot compete in the ufc. Jason Lambert is the only name that i consider decent ofr guys hes knocked out. Chuck also is bigger than rashad, at least in height. Rashad could go MW, hes not the biggest LHW in the league by a stretch. Chuck will stop most of his takedowns, thats a fact. He might get a couple, ubt Chuck WILL make this a stand up war. And chuck just beat wandy pretty bdaly in a standup war. If you think the rashad’s stand up is anywhere near wany’s you clearly dont know MMA.

  • Jason says:

All skills possessed by the two fighters aside, why are they even being considered for a title shot? Chuck Liddell just beat Silva, who wasn’t exactly on a winning streak anyway. Before that, he lost two back-to-back fights. By beating Rashad Evans of all people he’s back in line for a title shot? And if Rashad Evans wins, he’s being considered for a title shot? Rashad Evans hasn’t demonstrated that much skill. He has the most boring record in the UFC I can imagine – 2 knockouts, 3 split decisions, 1 majority decision, and 1 draw. Chuck Liddell’s strong name is the only thing drawing attention here.

  • Rod says:

Jason..I understand what your saying to a certain extent….But look at it this way. Evans has beaten everyone they’ve put in front of him…And honestly…Every fight that he won by a decision should have been a “unanimous” He clearly won 2 of the 3 rounds of everyone of those fight. It should have been an Unanimous against Bonnar..He clearly won 2 of 3…Rogan himself displayed his outrage that it was considered a split when Evans clearly dominated 2 rounds. Same against Bisping…and the Brad Imes fight should have been stopped…If you think Rashad Evans doesn’t deserve a fight at the title…then ask your self this…Why should Griffin get a shot? He had already lost to Ortiz and Jardine…Evans beat Jardine and should have beat Ortiz…Tito had to cheat just to keep from getting out wrestled. So just because forrest beat an overrated Shogun…He got a title shot and Rashad by beating Chuck shouldn’t? Come on now. I do agree with you when you say Liddell shouldn’t get a shot…because Chuck beat Wand and Wand had just been Knocked out in his last 2 fights…I think the only reason Liddell is being pushed to the spotlight is because Dana White has a hard on for Chuck…But if Evans win…He should be given a title shot…Lastly…If you think Rashad is boring…you must not have seen Ryoto Machida…in my opinion he’s the most boring and overrated fighter in the world.

  • 1PunchKO says:

Liddell has the experience, size, reach and a veterine in the octogan. My biggest concern at first was he is starting to get up in age but he’s still looking hard! So now my concern is his torn leg muscle he got a few weeks ago which delayed the fight and at 38 **** don’t heal as quickly as they use to. This could slow down keep Liddell from doing his best with the kick boxing so he’ll have to rely on his wrestling skills and some good ground and pound.

All in all, after seeing the Tito fight, I believe Rashad needs more experience to take on someone like Liddell so at 1.36 over Rashads 2.87 which I’m tempted to take, I’m going with Liddel for five c-notes and we will just have to C what happens?

  • USMCsilva says:

Tsk Tsk Tsk. It sucks when your wrong. 2nd round KO by “Sugar” Rashad Evans. Wasn’t Chuck supposed to do that?

  • crockpot says:

    ya seriously owned

  • OliMMA says:

I hope you all Rashad haters eat all your stupid, silly and hateful words. Chuck got destroyed and the replay of him lying flat in the air before he lays on the mat will be played for generations to come. LONG LIVE THE 52 BLOCKS, RASHAD, LONG LIVE UR UNBEATEN RECORD, LONG LIVE THE JACKSON TEAM.

  • ufcmanz says:

Chuck still has all his skills as far as punching but now his chin is getting a little weak…

  • Collett says:

Rod you called it perfect Evans in the second round by a burtal knockout. It was the second round and damn was it burtal. You also said, “I wonder what these racist haters are gonna say when Liddell is on his back again looking up at another black man”. You missed this one, Chuck wasn’t on his back he was face down. HA HA HA. I tell you what they are saying stuff like he still has his punching ability but his chin is gone. First what chin, every time he gets hit he goes to sleep, and his power is gone. Face it he is 38 and the young guns are taken over.

  • klobber says:

May Chuck Liddell rest in pieces ,.

Seems the only thing chuck can beat these days is his dick.

    Rashad Evans WAR !!!!!

  • UFC fan says:

he hell still be even getting worse because since he keeps getting koed like rampgae and rashad did he just lose over and over again

  • carpenter says:

why is it that when a black man wins the word “RACIST” comes up, looking up at a black man hahaha!! all i got to say to those morons is ‘get a life you trailer trash fools’ because of dogs like you racism will never go away. so quit your whining and lets have mature comments like gentlemen,,,
lets leave it MMA and not racism,,,,

  • Rod says:

Yep people can say what they want about me…I called it and it happened…I said since 2005 that Evans would beat Liddell and he would knock him out…No one at 205 has the speed of Evans and his power is very underrated…Chuck Liddell made the mistake of talking **** to Rashad, just like Salmon and he paid the price just like Salmon.

  • Rhymeskill15 says:

    yea rod ur right!!!
we all need to give evans the respect he deserves…do u not remember he was a heavyweight on tuf…and he was always the smaller fighter in his matches…yet he beat every person in front of him including that wannabe cowboy brad imes who was like ten times his size…people do not understand how strong evans really is…

  • ALL_VICTIM says:

I hate Evans ,(because of the Tito fight) but now he has my respect.

lol he KTFO of the Ice man :) )

  • DolfanG says:

Rhymes… beating Brad Imes ain’t nothing to brag about… everybody does that…

  • Rhymeskill15 says:

    dolfanf…
hahaha ur right…but i just wanted to try in some extra extra sugar on top u know!?!? hhahaa

but that foo was a lot bigger than evans…
man these next couple months in the ufc are going to be exciting and full of great fights…
    can’t wait!!!!!!!!!

  • Rhymeskill15 says:

    *DOLFANG!
    my bad..

  • Rhymeskill15 says:

“hahaha ur right…but i just wanted to try in some extra extra sugar on top u know!?!? hhahaa”
    let me rephrase this lol..

i wanted to basically make evans look a lil more good!! haha

  • 1PunchKO says:

I still stand on what I said above and that’s Evans has a lot of work and experience ahead of him. The knock out wasn’t a total surprise for me although I did think prior to the fight that Liddel would win it.

Liddel is reaching that age (about 38) where it’s going to be the younger fighters to start taking possition. The same thing happened to Gracie, Tito, Shamrock and most of the top fighters. They faded with age.

You have to wonder if Liddel wasn’t injured just 3 months ago when they had to cancel the #85 card fight if this might have gone different? At Liddels age, you don’t heal that fast.

Liddel wanted this fight and I thought he would over come the odds because I still think age for age, Liddel is still a better fighter but he definitly made the same exact mistake which got the belt taken from him last time and that was going for the upper cut and not watching for an overhand blow.

I’ll give props up for Evans but it would be a crucifing mistake for it to get to his head that he’s at the top now and could relax. He needs to keep training hard and his skills will definitly get better.

For now, I’d suggest Liddel take up the offer Pepsi offered him to become a spokesperson and commintator. There’s nothing to be ashamed of here other than maybe (lol) a bit to much trash talking not being at his peak age or condition and injured!

Looking for more quality fights from Evans. Take care all!

  • Jeramy Bottoms says:

I am still an “iceman” fan and he get’s something going. it seems he has more on his mind than fighting. Go chuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Rod says:

Read what i said on september 20th about this fight…I called it to a freaking tee…Rashad Evans is the most underrated fighter in the sport today…He’s the Lennox Lewis of the MMA world…He does what he has to win, but when it comes down to the big fights and his back is against the wall…Evans delivers…No one at 205 right now has the tools to handle that man…I’ve been saying it for about 2 years now and i will say it again…He’s the future of this sport.

  • Rod says:

oh i ment to say june 20th…i called it to a tee.

  • Dietrich says:

Props to you…I talked myself away from it over the course of the summer…

  • YZFOXRACING says:

DAM ROD… ALL PROPS TO YOU MAN… IT ALMOST SEEMS LIKE YOU FOUND A WAY TO ADD A COMMENT EARLIER.. YOU NEED TO GO BUY A LOTTERY TICKET..

  • Rod says:

Collett…Yep i knew it was gonna happen that way…People were trying to compare Rashad to Kevin Randleman and other wrestlers that Liddell had faced…They failed to realize that Rashad is one of the most explosive and atheletic gifted fighters to ever compete in the UFC..This guy is on the same level as GSP as far as talent goes…He’s just now starting to put all his tools together…Once he gets down submissions. leg kicks and perfect his Ground and Pound…Watch the **** out.

  • Rod says:

YZFoxracing…Like i said earlier…I’m a fighter my self…I was trained by one of the best fighters to ever live…Oliver Miller..So i know a thing or two about boxing and kickboxing….Liddell has far to many holes in his game to be fighting someone like Rashad…Chuck keeps his hands down…He has no head movement and most importantly…He hasn’t evolved as a fighter…Look at what happened to the Gracie, Shamrock, Ortiz and Matt Hughes…They all trained in camps were they were the top dogs and no one challenged them…So they begin to become very limited with there skills…The world of MMA changes every single day…You either get with the times or you get knocked out…

The “sprawl and brawl technique is fine…as long as your a good boxer technically…But liddell just leave far to many gaps and he doesn’t mix up his attacks….

  • timcat says:

Tito Ortiz handled him except for a bull**** point deduction. Yes you did call it to a tee, yes Liddell holds his hand at his nipples, I bow down.

  • Collett says:

Rod… What’s your comments on a Anderson Silva,Rashad Evans 205 fight? Also how long do you thing Rich Franklin will last in 205?

  • 1PunchKO says:

Rod of YZFoxracing – You got it bro. I’m a MMA fighter and instructor myself but just hit 42 and even though you can still kick ass, you just loose that testosterone I guess. I sympethise with the leg injury because after a nationals fight I was in just 6 months ago, I’m still out of it from a ankle and lower back injury. Slipped two disks 6 and 7cm and a third in the L3 ruptured. Six months down and still hoping to recover. You just don’t heal like you use to when you were in your 20’s early 30’s.

Rashad looks good but reminds me of Slice. Tough but still needs to put it all together and yea, the fight does keep changing without a doubt!

    “Can’t keep the belt forever”

  • Rod says:

Collett…Well let me answer your questions about Rich first…Rich Franklin is a good fighter that doesn’t seem to have a very good chin to me. I remember him back in the day when he faced Machida and let me tell you bro…It was “UGLY” Franklin to me just isn’t fast and tough enough to compete at 205.. Even though he’s one of my favorite fighters in MMA i just don’t see Rich making an impact at 205 in the UFC…I honestly think he will end up in the WEC pretty soon…It’s just too many fighters at that weight who can give it and take it…Rich can give it, but he has a reputation for not being able to take it.

Anderson Silva vs Rashad Evans…Well Anderson has been destroying everyone he’s faced so far in the UFC…”BUT” He’s only had one fight with the big boys at 205….Now Silva has fought before at 205 in pride…and other competetions but my problem with Anderson is this….If he were to face someone like Rashad he would be taken down at will…Anderson has one major weakness in his game and that’s his ability to defend the take down…Several fighters have taken him down…BUT he’s very good on his back, so he manages to get up or submit them…

If he were to fight Rashad at 205…I would pick Rashad all the way…I would Say Evans by second round knockout…My reason for this is as follows…1. Rashad is alot stronger…So Anderson will not be able to put him in the Clinch…2. Rashad is alot faster and his punches has more snap to them than anderson.
    3. If Anderson tries to take away Rashads power with his leg kicks Evans takes him down…Don’t get me wrong…Anderson Silva is a beast…But he better stay at 185…Because Evans….and a few more fighters would be too much for him at that weight…

Forrest Griffin has that belt on LOAN…IT belongs to RASHAD.

  • Rod says:

1PunchKO…Yeah your right bro…I honestly think Chuck has a lot left…I think Liddell was just matched up against the wrong fighter at the wrong time…Liddell should have just waited and faced Shogun…Who i think is a bit overrated…Rashad is just to quick on his feet for Chuck…I knew this would be the outcome from the first time i saw Evans fight…I still say Chuck Liddell is one of the top 3 fighters at 205…

I only think Rashad and Rampage are the only two fighter who can beat Liddell at that weight…Only because there very explosive with there hands and feet and those types of fighters give Chuck all kinds of trouble.

Liddell needs to evolve or he’s in a lot of trouble…Dana white is a buisness man…and he’s not going to keep on letting the so called “Face of the company” end up “Face Down and Ass up”..Chuck had better get it together or he will be out of the UFC…I honestly feel that if he looses his next fight…Dana won’t re sign him.

  • YZFOXRACING says:

I ALSO AGREE… CHUCK WILL BE BACK IM SURE OF IT
