Cris Cyborg Blames Failed Drug Test on Dietary Supplement

Cris Cyborg has blamed a dietary supplement for her failed drug test that was positive for steroids, which resulted in her being stripped of Strikeforce’s women’s featherweight title and her 16-second knockout of Hiroko Yamanaka being overturned.

From Cyborg’s official website:

I would like to sincerely apologize to StrikeForce, the Zuffa organization, Hiroko Yamanaka and my fans for my failed drug test.

I am ultimately responsible for everything I put in my body, and at the end of the day, there is no excuse for having a prohibited substance in my system. I do not condone the use of any performance enhancing drugs by myself or any other professional athlete, and willingly accept the penalties and fines that have been handed down to me by the California State Athletic Commission and those of the StrikeForce/Zuffa organization.

While I was preparing myself for my last fight I was having a difficult time cutting weight and used a dietary supplement that I was assured was safe and not prohibited from use in sports competition. It was never my intention to obtain an unfair advantage over Hiroko, mislead StrikeForce, the Commission or my fans. I train harder than any fighter in MMA and do not need drugs to win in the cage, and I have proven this time and time again! My only mistake is not verifying the diet aid with my doctor beforehand, and understanding that it was not approved for use in the ring. Unfortunately in the end I suffer the consequences and must accept the responsibility for my actions.

I will do everything I can to show my fans that I can still compete at the professional level without the use of any prohibited substances, and ask God’s forgiveness for my mistake.

Wow her English got so great for this sincere apology. Man I’d love to find what food Is responsible for making my testosterone 4 to 10 times that of a normal man. She is a good guy though.

  • RAMDOC says:

Not sure how they do things in Brazil, but not a lot of docs in the US prescribe horse steroids (Stanazolol) as a “diet aid”. Nice apology and I agree she probably trains harder than many female MMA athletes, but unless she has aids or is a serious burn victim, no excuses here.

    • Not exactly a horse steroid…in fact it is human approved as an anemia treatment.

Now, the fact that you didn’t know that says that 1. You don’t know as much about anabolic agents as you think you do, and 2. You can’t use the Google so good. I’m gonna tack on #3 for good measure: You can’t read. They did not find stanozolol in her system, they found the byproducts, the metabolites.

#1 there says that you don’t know what supplements contain what, or how they metabolize. Is there a chance her story is correct? Sure. It’s actually more likely than you being unable to plug that drug name into Google and read the first section of the wikipedia article that is the first result. What do we know about this particular metabolites that were found in her test? “The primary metabolites are unique to stanozolol and are detectable in the urine for up to 10 days after a single 5-10 mg oral dose.” That’s fairly consistent with something done while cutting weight. It actually lends some credence o her explanation.

Either way, she tested positive. So what? There is no logic to how people react to this. For example, so many people in the MMA community LOVE a thrice-caught, deadbeat never-was like Josh Barnett. Why then do they vilify others for being caught once? Get real, get consistent, get a clue. Things happen, they are punished. The real difference between Cyborg here and Barnett after he killed an entire promotion is that Cyborg will serve her suspension while Barnett ran off to Japan and kept competing to avoid the suspension and keep roiding out.

      • Drock says:

Why would you think people LOVE repeat offenders? They’re all scumbag cheats. That includes: Barnett, Sonnen, Carwin, Sherk, Cyborg.. all of them.

      • RAMDOC says:

Ahhh… home from work, so please allow me to retort. I hate having to pull out the ruler, but every once in a while you have to throw it down on the table and measure it…

I don’t get my knowledge from Google, rather my graduate DEGREES, yes that “degrees” plural.

Stanazolol is in fact an FDA approved hormone used in horses. It is absolutely NOT used in the treatment of anemia. You know how I know? I am physician licensed in 3 states and board certified in 2 specialties by the American Board of Medical Specialities. If I prescribed Stanazolol for anemia, it would be clear-cut malpractice and I would lose my medical license. Now, you may be confused about the anemia thing, because many androgens such as testosterone ethers have polycythemia (high blood cell counts) as a side effect but no doctor in their right mind would prescribe a PED to exploit it’s side effect profile when there are far superior treatment modalities available. I.e, iron pills. But, as you pointed out I don’t be reading so good so I may be wrong there.

What Stanazolol IS, is a very commoly used PED (yes, PED, as there are ZERO legit uses for it in American or better yet western medicine unlike testosterone in hypogonadal men) by female athletes, recreational bodybuilders and athletes that have to cut weight for competitions such as wrestlers, powerlifters, and mma fighters. Females particularly love it because it doesn’t cause as many if any of the virilization effects that testosterone ethers do nor the typical weight gain associated wth androgens, ergo, it’s popular use in weight cutting sports.

Now, cyborg may be right that she simply took a “diet aid” and this was in it as there is story after story available about supplement companies with “proprietary blends” that put illegal ingredients in their products. I.e. Army Soldiers that have pissed “hot” on a UA for taking popolar preworkout products sold right down the road at GNC. This happened less than a year ago. However, Stanazolol, its metabolites, horny goat weed or willow bark, it doesn’t matter. As she eloquently stated, she is ultimately responsible for what goes into her body and she owned up to it, perhaps not entirely honestly but you never know.

I think Cyborg testing positive deserves a little more than a “so what” also. I read here at the frenzy daily but post rarely and I often hold my tongue when others such as Chael Sonnen, Josh Barnett, Chris Leben, etc, have tested positive for PED’s (and make no mistake, Stanazolol is a PED, no ifs, ands, or but’s about it brother). Ped’s absolutely and unequivocally give these athletes an unfair advantage and they should be punished accordingly.

But, let me go check my facts real quick on… scoff.. webmd, like all those annoying patients I have that think they no more than me.

      • amped says:

So what you say? The difference with Cyborg is that she was the women’s champ and she absolutely demolished all of her competition in spectacular fashion.

Her whole career is now called into question and is tainted. Steroids have a far more profound efect on women; they make them more like men. Men who take steroids are already men.

      • Rex says:

RAMDOC… You obviously googled that!. hahaha.

      • griff griff says:

I think the RAMDOC got you on this one. If he’s not a real doctor, he probably slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

      • Jason says:

I’m not going to get into whether she’s guilty or not, personally I love to watch her fight, and seeing how much bigger she was for this fight versus the past, it makes me wonder why she would even go that right. Winny though isn’t a powerful steroid (it’s effective sure, but not a bulk builder, just wish it never happened).

As for the hating on her thing, easy. It’s because of how she looks. Instead of promoting the best fighters in women’s MMA they want to promote the most attractive. It’s why Gina keeps getting all of this hype as the face of women’s MMA, not because she’s the best, far from it, it’s because she’s attractive. Me, give me the best fighters and with Cyborg, I look forward to when she steps back in the octagon.

  • My friend says:

What people forget, so many atheletes use masking techniques to cover up the prohibited enhanments. Bj pen said it best” it’s rare to find an natural athlete. Even the great ones used, but won’t say there names”. But not suprised. Nor naive to the systemic problem.

  • RAMDOC says:

Let me add one caveat. I incorrectly stated Chael Sonnen used PED’s. Chael as well as many others can possibly have legit reasons such as hypogonadism, testicular failure, testicular cancer, etc, to use testosterone and messing up the timing of the blood test could look suspicious. Vice let’s say Stanazolol or its metabolites which have no legit uses unless your name is Secretariat…

    • bsbiz says:

The only thing about Sonnen was that his ratio was four times the legal limit. That’s not “messing up the timing”.

      • RAMDOC says:

well, I guess it’s a matter of semantics. First off, I don’t have the slightest clue as to how the athletic commission does its business or what levels they use as cutoffs. The normal range of serum testosterone is 300 to 1000-ish ng/dL so if they mean 4 times the upper limit, i.e. 4000 (!) yes that’s ridiculous. But depending on Chael’s dosing regimen yes, blood test timing absolutely matters. Typical regimens are 100mg every 1 week, 200 mg every 2 weeks or 300 mg every 3 weeks. If his blood was drawn shortly after (1-3 days) getting 300mg instead of at day 15 like it was supposed to be, then his level could be 1200 to 2000ng which is 4 times 300-500 by my math. But this is not news to the commission I’m guessing and I’m sure they know most of the tricks athletes use to “game” the system.

  • Tup says:

Yea RAMDOC!!! Thanks for putting the shiny one in their place… She got nabbed and that’s that.. Am sure the only thing she is surprised about is that she got caught- Taking PEDs in a sport like boxing/mma not only gives an athlete an unfair advantage (as it does in any sport) but puts their opponent at a much greater risk than baseball, basketball, track and field and even football (team sport/pads/helmet etc) does not put an opponent in as vulnerable a position as does a one on one full contact sport like boxing or mixed martial arts… Her penalty is lenient in my opinion..then again Antonio Margarito got even less for loading his mitts…

    • RAMDOC says:

No prob. ;<) Lots of misinformation out there and I cringe every time I read some inaccurate garbage about testosterone, PED's, supplements, etc. Def dangerous stuff when it comes to combat sports. Also, agreed she is backpedaling to save face which is exactly what she has to do to get back in the cage eventually.

    • Rynoman says:

haha that retort was brilliant. I love watching cyber bullies gets pwned. Way to go RAMDOC!! Made my day….probably my week.

As for Cyborg, I think the incedent will help womens MMA in the fact that there will actually be competition for the 145 belt now. Not just people lining up for the slaughter house. Im not a fan of failed drug tests. Not performance enhancing drugs anyways.

  • amped says:

Just a little fyi as well, Victor Conte of Balco chimed in on this specific incident and said that there has never been a documented case of stanazol found in dietary supplements.

  • Devin says:

Not to state the obvious but damn ramdoc you just told that dude so bad. Yes many cheat, but only a relatively few get caught. So when it happens, its even more embarrassing and insulting. And It’s one thing for men who have been training for their whole lives being short on natural testosterone (and admittedly, they are taking advantage of the rule which allows them to be 4 times the normal amount (and on top of that their all messed up in the first place likely due to previous steroid abuse earlier in their lives)), but I mean she’s a woman! (allegedly.) She doesn’t even have testosterone naturally in her system. And on top of that she looks like she straight up is getting the sex change dosing. I mean its absurd.

    • RAMDOC says:

Thanks man. A lot of internet bullies out there. Frantz is right, females do have testosterone in their systems just a very little amount. To be clear, Stanazolol is NOT testosterone or a testosterone derivative. It is used (illegaly) specifically because it supposedly does not have the virilization side effects (deepening voice, hair growth, clitoral enlargement) of testosterone yet has most of the anabolic properties (maintaining muscle mass during severe calorie restriction, increased vascularity, strength gains without weight gains, etc). I would say it’s likely she is on something else or her bodyfat is just soooo low, she has started appearing a tad more masculine than she should be.

  • frantzfanon says:

Actually, everyone has testosterone, males just produce it ten times more tban females…

  • Devin says:

Ah good knowledge thanks. Well with what you said sounds like she’d be wise to take that option and prob did. But you can’t rule out that she didn’t take testosterone, in fact she prob took her fare share off man roids. I mean her head, neck, and face are totally manly. Not to mention her voice. Anyway I’ve just set a record discussing woman’s sports. I’m so ashamed. I think the true story here is how that dude sounded to sound, and on point, with his knowledge and attacks, and then you just virtually pimp smacked him with truth right in front of us all. That was amazing. Just goes to show you can’t listen to.everything you hear on the internet.

  • Devin says:

Lol. Look its smeegle turning into gollum! Ok now I’m done.

  • Simplify says:

Just have a Natural Division & an Enhanced one-prob solved. “Stand in your Truth”-Suze Orman! LOL!!!

  • erik says:

I’m schocked! I though Cyborg just naturally started to get a deeper voice, larger & squared jaw, man-muscles, etc. There’s got to be an explanation, right? (the explanation is that home’boy’ took ‘roids, and everyone knows it)

  • Jan May says:

when I was young I would have loved to get in the ring with her that would have been an awesome fight. cyborg is awesome. I think it is bull what they came up with. I cant believe they did tat she is the reason I watch strikeforce. I hope they let her come back
