UFC on Fox Results Recap: Dos Santos KOs Velasquez in 64 Seconds to Win Title

Junior dos SantosJunior dos Santos knocked out UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez in just 64-seconds to win the title as the UFC made its network debut on Fox on Saturday night from Anaheim, California.

Dos Santos caught Velasquez with a punch to the ear that sent the champion stumbling to the canvas and followed up with unanswered punches on the ground that forced referee “Big” John McCarthy to stop the fight just over a minute into the scheduled five-rounder.

Dos Santos improves to 14-1 overall and 8-0 in the UFC following the win, while Velasquez falls to 9-1 after suffering his first loss.

In the UFC on Fox co-main event, lightweight contender Ben Henderson outpointed Clay Guida for a unanimous decision win to earn the next shot at champion Frankie Edgar.

all that hype for a crap fight!

  • Sgtrocknroll says:

So much for ‘Brown Pride’! Lolol

  • fcfighter says:

Thankfully, that punch hit Cain’s shoulder before it cracked his egg. He may not have regained his wits…

    JDS is the man.

  • garrule says:

@sgtrocknroll “So much for ‘Brown Pride’! Lolol”

I hope you’re simply referring to Cain by his nickname and not Velasquez’s pride in his heritage. If so, find another sight, dude….there is no place for that BS here.

  • KEVSMITT says:

Amazing finish. Great debut for UFC on FOX. Great production by FOX and well done by the UFC to stay true to their traditional form as well.

    • DrDoom says:

if thats your way of saying it was a dud sarcastically .. well put …….. but you cant be serious that it was an amazing finish .

      • fcfighter says:

        @DrDoom

I’ll bet the reported 60 million loud and proud in Brazil thought it was an amazing finish.

I can’t speak for anyone else but I jumped out of my seat at the sound of that shot. The silence of the crowd was awesome as well.

Then again, I probably got my war-fix from the Bendo/Guida fight.

I can see why fight fans were disappointed, but Jr’s accomplishment (KO’ing an undefeated Cain), for me, overshadowed the brevity of the match. I prefer what I saw over a screwy decision. At least the fighters decided it – and the price was right.

        Just my pov

      • KEVSMITT says:

There was not a bit of sarcasm in my comment.

How could you say that was a dud or question that it was an incredible finish? Two of the best finishers in the HW division went at it, one connected and capitalized. Who cares that it was short, if it was exciting and decisive? If you need more fighting you should have watched the prelims or ordered the boxing PPV after this ended, but you can’t question the quality of the finish.

      • Ok, I understand that it was decisive…but exciting? A few leg kicks then a lucky hook that hit the “Randy spot”?

        That wasn’t exciting.

  • Johntron says:

the first time i saw JDS fight was against cro cop and right after that fight, i said this guy will be the champ one day and here it is

congrats to JDS, a great human being with all the right attitude and a great fighter!!!

  • DrDoom says:

To the hardcore fan , “yes” it was a finish ……… to the newbie or casual fan , “Thats It ? ” and since you need those newbies to expand things ….. not good at all .Even Dana looked kinda pissed afterwards trying to make it all seem cool .

  • Kevin Carroll says:

I can’t imagine anyone is happy with this. It is what it is. NFL games that should be good – aren’t. World Series are sometimes 4 – 0 sweeps. I’m surprised that it was as short as it was. It had to be stopped but it would have been nice to see if Cain could recover. JDS is going to kill Brock if he wins against Overeem. He might not be able to do that. The heavyweight division doesn’t look that competitive anymore. I’d rather see this matchup again. I would think this still has the most potential to be a good fight. This doesn’t prove much as to whose a better fighter. Proves that hitting in the temple / side of the head (behind the ears) is as effective way to win a fight as any other method. It always has been. This fight sucked. Too bad.

    • fcfighter says:

      @Kevin Carroll

I respect your opinion, you were not impressed.

However, I disagree whether or not this proves who is the better fighter. If someone trains and plans to knock out their opponent, and, subsequently, does that – give the man his due. He did something no one else has done which was beat Cain, and do it in relatively short order.

I’m not sure what Jr. did to not deserve to be the #1 HW. He threw a legal punch and finished his opponent.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a rematch, but Cain needs to get in line.

      • Kevin Carroll says:

It’s not that I’m unimpressed – just would have like to see a longer, more complete fight. I was pumped for this fight and wished it was different. I bet there is a lot of MMA newcomers that were sitting in front of the TV saying ‘THAT knocked him down?’. We all know better. Isn’t the answer from Cain about ‘the shot’ is that the fight didn’t last long enough? It would have come. I still can’t believe after all these fights and nobody’s seen JDS on the ground. He could go from workdbeater to very beatable in short order. I’m just saying that it wasn’t a very good showing to showcase what the UFC is. It’s nobody’s fault. Just unfortunate. Anyone feel Rogan’s ‘unbelievable’ felt forced? Welcome to the Machida era.

    • t-rozzy says:

exactly. he got caught in the temple. thats a knockout in mixed martial arts. the fight might not have been as long as people would have liked but it is mma and thats why it is always so exciting and you can never blink. it was a good fight, not a great fight but still entertaining for fight fans.

  • fcfighter says:

I believe I heard Dana saying whether or not the fight was 30 seconds or 30 mintues (I know there’s a 25min max) it would be a great fight. So he was fully aware of the risk.

I’m sorry to the newbie fans. My job is to throw my hands. I cannot be held responsible for the consequences of those actions. – my version of Jr’s message to the populous

“I’m sorry to the newbie fans. My job is to throw my hands. I cannot be held responsible for the consequences of those actions. – my version of Jr’s message to the populous”
      FUUUUUNNNNYYYYYYY!!! Hahahaaha

      Way to go Cignoooo!!!!!!!

Dana seemed visably upset. Couldnt hide his emotions, and what was all that talk about JDS always gassing??? Outside of Cain every heavyweight gasses after the 3rd round, Jr hasn’t had a problem with gassing in his fights!! Sure his KO power isnt as powerful as it is in the 1st but whose is? And preFight Brock saying JDS HAS NOT fought top contenders before was ridiculous! Well Brock if if if you can beat the REEM without turning into America’s Best Dancer, then you are next….!

      • quad says:

I caught that gassing out comment as well and was a bit puzzled by it. I imagine he was talking about the roy nelson fight where jds kinda punched himself out the first round.

      • amped says:

I think that Dana was pulling for Cain. To be fair, we can’t comment on cardio, because NEITHER fighter has gone 5 rounds. I’m dumfounded by Dana’s comments about JDS having cardio issues; if he does, they’ve never caused him to lose.

In regards to the fight, it pretty much went the way I thought it would. I think Dana was hoping for a rehash of Bonner vs Griffin for the “casual” or “newbie” fans, but fortunately in retrospect this was an mma fight and not an unskilled barroom brawl.

      • bsbiz says:

No, he said JDS had not fought the best wrestlers in the division.

      • JDS gassed bad against Nelson. That’s where the comment comes from. any fighter used to finishing quickly will gas in later rounds.

WTF was Cain thinking standing with him? Brock and Dana were 100% accurate on that. Idiotic move that cost him a belt.

  • wm says:

Cain looked flat and out of shape at the weigh -ins and entering the ring. A 14 mo layoff hurts even the best of them despite Brock and Dana’s pre-fight denials.

  • hee haw says:

This may be way out there in left field buy I see a rematch of Congo and Cain a possibility and the winner getting a shot at the winner of JDS and Lesnar/Overeem

  • Brod says:

    Cain will be back
And regain his belt and that’s a fact. He got caught and it
Wont happen again. Good job on jds tho

  • learntoread says:

It will be interesting to see who they give Cain to next…Possibly the winner of Barnett / Cormier? (*that’s if their Grand Prix fight even goes down).

  • skdrcr says:

Cain got caught, it doesn’t matter how long of a layoff you have. You can’t train your jaw to take hits like that. If you ask me, Cormier has the best chance of giving JDS a run for his money. Great fight even if it only lasted a minute. DW did look pissed which was awesome to see! Cain should fight the winner of MIR/NOG.

    • Gee, if only Cain got hit in the jaw your comment might make sense. He got Randy’d.

      • skdrcr says:

Whether he got hit it the jaw or behind the ear doesn’t make a difference either way his knees buckled. I’m sure you wouldve found it exciting if JDS was on the receiving end of the exchange. I’m a fan of both fighters, it simply wasn’t Cain’s night. He did try to take him down when he caught Juniors leg. Maybe the plan was to work the leg kicks and wear him down a little. Then take him down in the later rounds.

  • uso says:

yeah J.D.S IZ THE MAN GOOD FIGHT HEAVY HITTER…………….

  • amped says:

Dana can be pissed all he wants. You can’t have a fixed outcome unless you script and fix the outcome. It is what it is. It was a great knockout. Hopefully the loss turns into a positive for Cain.

  • russiandoeboi says:

Cain seemed a bit tentative- even at the weigh in’s he looked confused for a split second where to exit after the interview. yet he’s stil seems #1 and will come back stronger. JDS looked his best. i hope they have several rematches. #’s 1 & 2. lame how they extract overeem, and destroy the strikforce GP to give brock a better match up than barnett or now cormier or bigfoot. the phrase ‘world champion’ kind of loses it’s cred when money and match making meet. nothing against brock but i’d love it if overeem comes confident and knee’s brock into unconscioussness proving other orgs will always have top level guys no matter how much of a monopoly the UFC has

  • DrDoom says:

Was just watching FOX NFL and they were making fun of Glazer about last nights fight ………….. so if even FOX is poking fun at it then that just proves it was a dud .

  • t-rozzy says:

If the UFC wanted a real depiction of MMA as their break through into the prime time tv they shouldnt have put in heavyweights. the chances for that kind of quick finish is always higher when you have bigger guys with more power behind those hands. JDS connected and the fight was over. I was entertained and happy i tuned in but thats because I’m a fight fan. To get fans into the sport they should have showed the either the light-heavys, middleweights, or the welters.

  • Aaron Diesel says:

First let me say that exactly 1 minute before JDS caught Cain, I said exactly this: “Cain got hit by Kongo a couple of times, and that fight went to decision, if he gets caught by JDS, there will be no decision.” One minute later he got caught. It was a good fight, between the two top hw mma fighters in the world at that time. I disagree with Cain having to fight Kongo. I think the winner of Lesnar/Overeem gets his shot, the winner of Mir/Nog gets that shot and Cain should have to work his way back through probably lesnar/Overeem loser and Mir/Nog loser back to contention. But that might make too much sense for the organization.

That being said, JDS has some of the best hands in the MMA HW world, hands. Although he should be pretty damned good on the ground (simply because of his camp and training partners), once you put him in that cage against arguably the fastest hw shot in the world (Lesnar) with crazy wrestling and power, or one of the greatest true Thai kickboxers in the world (Overeem, sorry to the haters, just my opinion) things become much more complicated for JDS. Cain is a great wrestler, he did not really use it vs JDS and got hit. He could not have though he could outbang JDS after the average strikfest we saw against Kongo, and against Nog when even Nog thought he should retire.

Of course we will not know for sure who he will fight next until December 30th, although my gut says Overeem should kick the crap out of Lesnar, Brock has actually earned a bit of respect from me for actually fighting as hard as he does and to keep coming back. The only other monster wrestler to hype up and bring it was Bobby Lashley, who may not even fight again after a single loss. Overeem on the other hand, only needs to prove his takedown defense against Brock, he has proven that he is a fighter over the years. Junior Dos Santos has an interesting future ahead of himself with that Belt in his hands. Mir/Nog (longshot, but if Nog gets a title shot while JDS holds the belt?) Lesnar/Reem, and hell, I say logic suggests Nelson/Kongo and somewhere lurking Cain will get into the mix. So to suggest that the HW division is not competitive, that last statement suggests otherwise, and that there will be a full on year of great hw fights in the 2012 UFC Season.

  • Sgtrocknroll says:

Cain’s a great fighter, but i’ve seen him take shots before and he weathered it. Just like Lesners knockout of Coulture, right behind the ear. New sweet spot!

  • jcohl says:

Had awhile to think about this and both Fox and the UFC got what they deserved by building an entire show around 1 fight between hardhitting HWs.
Velasquez looked timid and to be following a sh!t-awful fightplan, and JDS came to the cage ready to KTFO someone.
That usually yields a quick end to someone’s night, and thats what we got.
Dana White has no one to blame but himself for not more strongly communicating to Fox how incredibly fu<king stupid this idea was, regardless of how many tune in.
He can indirectly disrespect me all he wants in the post-fight presser, but it won't make me any less right.
More eyes on a bad fight doesn't help MMA, the UFC, or Fox moving forward trying to get this thing going.
People as always will disagree but unfortunately said disagreement won't change how things actually are.
In this case though I really wish it would…
