Franca To Return To The UFC Against Edgar at UFC 87
Former lightweight challenger Hermes Franca (18-6) will return to the UFC in August to face “The Answer” Frank Edgar (8-1) at UFC 87 in Minnesota.
NBCSports.com reported the bout over the weekend.
The bout will be Franca’s first since being suspended for one year by the California State Athletic Commission after testing positive for steroids following a loss to then-champion Sean Sherk at UFC 73 last July. Franca was cut from the UFC at his request but he has since re-signed with the promotion. Prior to the July loss, Franca had won eight-straight bouts including three-straight UFC victories over Joe Jordan, Jamie Varner, and Spencer Fisher as well as a WEC win over “The Ultimate Fighter 5″ winner Nate Diaz.
Edgar, a collegiate wrestler at Clarion University, suffered his first professional loss in April at UFC Fight Night 13, losing via unanimous decision to Gray Maynard. Prior to the defeat he had won eight-straight bouts including UFC wins over Tyson Griffin, Mark Bocek, and Spencer Fisher.
UFC 87 “Seek and Destroy” takes place at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Saturday, August 9th, and airs on pay-per-view. In the main event welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre takes on top-contender Jon Fitch. In other featured bouts lightweights Kenny Floran and Roger Huerta will clash for a 155-pound title shot and Brock Lesnar will look to notch his first win inside the octagon against Heath Herring.

i got hermes franca in this one
Why is Edgar getting a big named fight and not Gray Maynard? I havent heard much about him since he beat Edgar….has anyone else?
I know what you’re saying Jason but we still have to see who Gray’s next opponent is. In my opinion this will be a tough match for Franca. He’s fighting Edgar who has been on a warpath and still in action over the last year. Franca might get a wrath of $h!t from the fans over his steroid controversey like Sherk did and I do not believe that favors him at all. We’ll see….looks to be a good fight unless Hermes is rusty from lack of action.
Oh im not doubting this fight nor am I doubting Edgar….hell I didnt think Gray stood a chance vs him….but Gray should get a big name like a Franca…..because he doesnt want to be like Nate Diaz and dominate in his fights…then get stuck with lack luster fights…like a Kurt Pelligrino and a Josh Neer!!
this is shaping up to be a sick fight card, one definitely worth paying for. it definitely makes this weekend’s card look like a “UFC fight night” card.
Lay off this weekends fight card. Everyone bashed it so bad I almost started getting mad but then I stood back and took a better look. Truth is $h!t happened and the card took a toll. I understand and still get to see guys I want to see. Anyone not watching will miss out on something. There is too much negativity towards this card for something big not to happen. Can’t wait til Sunday so I can come tell you guys all the great moments you missed by not watching. Don’t act like front runners now. Just because there are not 10 big names on the card or titles on the line doesn’t make it a bad card.
I agree Kelvin, this card is looking great. I am looking forward to a lot of the match-ups. GSP-Fitch, I’m picking GSP but should be a good one. Guida-Danzig, Edgar-Franca, Lesnar-Herring (a chance to see if Lesnar has improved his game over the past few months). And I am especailly looking forward to the battle between Florian and Huerta, both past winners of ‘fight of the night’, and one I believe could be FOTN.
This weekends card (in my opinion) pales in comparison, but I am looking forward to Vera’s return and I think his fight with Werdum should be good.
Man this card is becoming better every week. Fitch vs. Gsp I wanna see fitch win this fight man he is an awesome fighter but so is gsp I how this turns out to be a war. Franca vs. Edgar I think franca will dominate edgar like gray did. Guida vs. Danzig man this one is also going to be good but got danzig winning it.
A very good rumored card indeed…
hey KOuch we must be the only 2 people on here that are looing forward to this sat night, i think this is going to be a sick card with some great fights, i cant wait to watch davis an swick, im not swicks biggest fan so im going to be hopeing davis knocks him out but swick also has good hands so its going to be intresting, always good to see how fellow brit the count gets on so the blood will be pumping for this fight, cant wait to see vera bounce back this guy fights with kicks punches knees the lot so will be intresting, then we got matt who will be looking to prove a point to everyone but as we saw in alves last match hes no mug and will be looking for an upset. hope ive changed a few peoples mind about this card,
on to the story franca will kick edgars ass big miss match for me this one, hope we see some more flying knees like the ones that nearly put away sean sherk.
Johnboy,
I believe we stand alone. Davis vs Swick is a stand up war I cannot wait for. I really expect a KO or ref stoppage/TKO in that fight. I am excited for Vera’s comeback because I believe he has the potential to be a future HW champion. Hughes vs Alves should be a good one as well. Alves could start climbing the WW ladder into contender position or Hughes could string together a few wins for a title shot and retire. As far as Franca I think you’re forgetting he’s been out of action for a year. I’m sure he has been training but coming back after a year to fight someone like Edgar is a big challenge. In any case John, I cannot wait for Sunday when you and me will be the only two here talking about Saturday’s event because no one else wants to watch.
Johnboy & KOuch, I didn’t say I wasn’t interested in Saturdays card, just that I thought 87 was looking to be a great card, I am just looking forward to that event more than this one. I will still be watching this Saturday, and I agree that it should be a good night of fights. Anybody who has been watching MMA for a while knows that sometimes even the undercard fights are better than the main events, so it could turn into a hell of an exciting night. And it’s a UFC card, will definitely be better than the elitexc circus last weekend. Go Vera, I think he has the potential to be a champ someday too, one of the most exciting HH I’ve seen.
The reason you’ve not heard anything from Gray since he beat Edgar is he was one of Forrest Griffin’s coaches on this most recent season of The Ultimate Fighter. Now that filming has wrapped up for the show, you’ll see Gray fighting again soon.
This is a really good match up! I think Edgar will pull this one out!
Jason’s right though, why aren’t they putting Maynard in a big name fight. He deserves it! Maybe he sill get the main event of the next Fight Night which I think will probably be September.
This may not be that big of a name, but I would love to see Gray Maynard-vs-Spencer Fisher…..or Gray Maynard-vs-Rich Clementi
from a sherdog post
group of investors led by Dana White have agreed in principle to purchase the UFC from Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta for an undisclosed amount. Included in this investment group is WWE’s Vince McMahon who will now own a minority stake in the company. They also have plans on taking the company public by years end.
At the press conference also expect Dana to announce that with the help of McMahon, who has extensive connections in the New York State Athletic Commission, they were able to get the UFC sanctioned in New York, and plan on having a show sometime in the winter at Madison Square Garden. That is all I have right now.
