UFC on Versus 6 took place tonight in our nation’s capital, where UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz defended his title over Demetrious Johnson, as “Might Mouse” proved to be a game challenger but Cruz was just a little better in each round.
Cruz nearly finished the fight with a rear naked choke to neck crank chain, but Johnson fought through it and lasted the full five rounds.
In the co-main event, Stefan Struve used his striking to set up a second-round submission of Pat Barry. Barry tried to escape the triangle choke with a power bomb, but Struve held on for the finish.
Elsewhere on the card, Charlie Brenneman’s dream year ended violently with a first-round headkick knockout to Anthony Johnson and Mac Danzig and Matt Wiman’s rematch more than made up for the controversial stoppage in their first bout as Wiman again secured the victory, only this time by decision.
The complete UFC on Versus 6 results included:

I think Pat Barry is gonna be on his last leg in the UFC soon. I actually thought he looked pretty good up until it hit the ground, but he’s gotta improve his sub defense. I think he should move down to 205 where he would be much more effective. He would definitely make some down there.
It was a very good card for a non ppv think your right benny about Barry don’t think there’s much left for him at heavyweight but would he have trouble making weight at lighthw?I think he might if I’m honest
I want to like Barry, but he does whack stuff that just turns me off. Stop spitting water all over the octagon and stop wearing your sunglasses (if you must wear them inside) upside down.
Yeah I see your point there, lol @ the sunglasses. Speaking of whack, there’s gotta be something done about the officiating in the cage. It’s one thing when a ref doesn’t see a low blow once in a blue moon, but when it begins to directly interfere in the outcome of a fight, it’s going too far. Fernando Yamasaki is unqualified to do his job at the level of the UFC IMO.
On top of it, Mario Yamasaki allows a fighter to take about 10 shots too many before stopping the following fight. Two brothers, two blunders, go figure. Every ref IMO should strive to be like Josh Rosenthal and Herb Dean. They’re PERFECT. They let the action flow, they stop fights whenever a fighter is in danger but always give them time to fight back provided they’re defending intelligently. they don’t overtly show their preferences for one fight style over another, and they don’t stand people up from dominant positions to appease the “slugfest” fans.
Fernando Yamasaki has to be nuts if he thinks what he did was anywhere near justified. I said it before, not only did he cheat Shane Roller by not letting him tap, he cheated Grant out of a hard fought victory too. As a result the fans end up booing him for something that’s not even his fault instead of cheering him on for giving them the finish they wanted to see and that awesome and flawless display of transitional technique.
It was just pitiful.
Oh and just on a side note, I’m extremely impressed with Mr. Paul Sass. He’s a true ground specialist and a really dangerous guy off of his back. Perhaps another guy to keep an eye on in the near future at 155.
I think a strong striker wouldn’t allow it, but just as that strong striker has one punch power, Sass has a similar quality on the ground, as Johnson found out.
The Cruz johnson monotony was due to the 5 minute round limit.
Even the deep rear naked turned out to be a false alarm – johnson in a sense got the better out of it because, once out he launched a good pace/offense.
Without the interruption of the 5 min. horn maybe cruz would have done some real damage, or maybe the attrition would have left the bigger fighter depleted and KO’d – we’ll never know
Monotony?
Are you sure you know what that word means?
Like anyone else you’re entitled to your opinion, but that fight was anything BUT monotonous.
Cruz-Johnson featured striking, wrestling, and submission fighting at varying percentages. It was contested at a speed and pace seldom if ever seen in the UFC.
He11 Cruz even threw a suplex out there for sh!ts and giggles.
Both men brought it right up until the final bell, previously trained their a$$es off, and worked hard to promote the fight before Saturday.
WTF more would you expect from either the fighters or the fight?
These were 2 combat sportsmen dropping a FoTN performance on a free-per-view.
How were any reasonable expectations not met?
And whats this nonsense about the round ending being an “interruption”?
How would you prefer North American MMA to be contested, as a NHB scrap at some truckstop? Or under PRIDE rules?
How well did that sh!t format work out for PRIDE and now most of Japanese MMA, what little there is left of it?
MMA has been there and done that. Unified rules have helped propel North American MMA into the mainstream, so your criticism seems without basis in fact.
B!tching just to b!tch is pointless, and of course if you didn’t like what you were seeing you could have just changed the channel…
Word up.
That fight was at 100 mph. Joe and Mike couldn’t even speak as fast as these guys were throwing punch/kick combinations. These guys put it down in every way for the ‘35ers. This is what a fight looks like when two well-trained, well rounded professionals enter the cage. The Domina8r did his job, but hats off to a great showing from Mighty Mouse. If the rumored, unpublicized backstage bonuses are true, these two should be at the front of the line.
@jcohl
One edit: SEVERAL textbook Chis Benoit-style belly to back suplexes, one of which was after over 20 minutes of hummingbird-like action
@jcohl
I agree with you, It was an awesome title fight with everything in it. I was not disappointed with it at all. Everyone does have their own opinion but I don’t know how someone would think this bout was monotonous?
a really great card, loved the wiman and danzig fight
IMO Dana White could have given 2 fotn bonuses. I thought the Cruz Johnson fight was a bit closer than 50-45 as 2 judges had it. The 4th round was very close and should have at least been a tie. Either way the right guy one.
I thought the same thing as I was wondering which fight would get it, as I’m pretty sure Dana has done that in the past.
50-45 was the right decision but the rounds were narrow. Using a half point system I’d scored it 50-46.5. Every round was close but Cruz was narrowly winning each.
@chris
I like the 46.5 and you’d know better than I, I just thought the 4th rnd was johnson’s best, I thought he outstruck him and and controlled the oct, and Cruz only took him down once. That being said I don’t necessarily think he(Johnson) won the round but I don’t think Cruz did either.
A great night of fights…that was a great main event.
A. Johnson needs a step up in competition. Diego Sanchez, anyone?
just read on facebook that Cruz fought with a broken hand.
Barry has too much mass to down to 205. His legs are bigger then Jamal Andersons were when he was playing for the Falcons. Hopefully he gets at least one more fight before he gets axed. Paul Sass needs a step up in competition.
no disrespect to paul but a one dimensional game will not get you far in the ufc<
Well it’s gotten him pretty far so far. We’ll see.
Tell that to Royce Gracie.
I think he was referring to modern MMA, not fifteen years ago.
yes definitely modern mma
