* - Lawler-Smith was ruled a no contest due an accidental eye gouge by Lawler. Because it was a championship bout and it had not gone three rounds a judge’s decision could not be rendered and thus the bout was ruled a no contest and Lawler retained the EliteXC middleweight title. Gary Shaw announced after the decision was rendered that Lawler and Smith will rematch for the title at a future event and, due to their performances and the controversial ending, both fighters will receive their win bonuses.

Not a fan of the dancers at all. Busta Rhymes wasn’t so great but tolerable. Baroni is who he is. He’s a major self-promoter and people know who he is because of it. He happened to lose tonight but he’s still a solid fighter.

I’m an MMA writer and that was one hell of a confusing ending. No contest was, in the end, the right call but why Smith wasn’t given time to recover is beyond me. The bout was superb up until that point and the stoppage was controversial at best to down right wrong at worst.
I was glad to hear Shaw announce the immediate rematch and that both would receive their win bonuses.
wow…just wow. I was so much more impressed with that fight than I thought I’d be. if kimbo had any sort of endurance that’d have been a much quicker fight, but that was definitely a great way to end a night.

Gotta admit, not overly enamored with elitexc and this showing. I’d be absolutely livid if i didn’t watch it tonight and go to watch it tivo’d tomorrow only to find out that because they can’t manage time worth a damn ,i missed the main fight. it’s not even something where every fight went to decision, i mean 2 fights were one minute, but they were all too happy to fill that in with commercials or an hour commenting about a ****ty stoppage. I’ll watch the next on cable tv, but don’t ever see myself paying for an elitexc ppv.

This is a joke..plain and simple… starting off with dancers….then trying to bring in celebs (busta)….then not giving smith his 5 minutes…then finally ending it with elite prob yelling in the ref’s ear to stop the fight so kimbo wont lose…which by the way, i had him losing the fight up until then…sure, maybe if he didnt stop it..kimbo would have knocked him out…but whatever…that ref almost ranks up there with mazzagatti…elite is a joke…doesnt even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the ufc or even wec….WEC’s card tomorrow night will destroy this one….
I will watch elite again when its on for free, but like Jeremy said….i would NEVER pay money to see an elite card…not even $1!!!

What a joke. Dumb doctors, dumb refs, fighter comes in 4.5lbs overweight, kimbos gassed after 4 minutes, what a poor excuse for mma’s network debut. Thompson was not going to be knocked out, kimbo was too gassed. As long as Thompson didn’t get knocked out he won that fight. The first time the ref stood them up when Thompson had him in side control was a joke too. Then towards the end of the 2nd he’s telling him he’s not doing anything when he’s landing forearms on the side of Mr. T’s head. They were looking for any way possible to keep Bimbo undefeated. Thompson sucks too, but he deserved the chance to get the win or get ko’d. Dana is right, Tito or even GSP would kick kimbo’s ass on conditioning alone. Big Foot Silva better be next in line for Kimbo.

It was the worst MMA event I have seen since being a fan for the past 3 years. The only good bout was a chick fight. The Lawler stoppage was pathetic. It’s clear that Kimbo is not a good MMA fighter and CBS/Elite want to protect their investment so the fight was stopped. Also, the camera work for the Kimbo fight was crap.
I’ll stick to the UFC PPV.
I have to say that was with out a doubt one of the worst MMA cards I have ever seen. Seriously, I was hoping this would be a step forward for our sport but I feel like it is a complete regression i.e. the NY jack a$$ or the Smith stoppage. Anyways, Kimbo is no where near the elite fighter his promotion makes him out to be and while as a Florida boy I love the story but he doesn’t belong as a main event. Brock Lesnar showed more potential against a quality opponent and he still lost. So why did it feel like this was completely rigged? Kimbo’s fight should have been stopped in the second round. Arlovski-O’brian ended when O’brian didn’t defend himself and O’brian was just stuck and not taking solid shots. Kimbo took what 15 shots to the head and the ref said “you aren’t doing anything”. Excuse me what? Also I’ve seen officials not allow guys to enter a fight with cauliflower ear that bad and yet Thompson was allowed to? honestly it really looked like the entire fight was set up for kimbo to win and when he started losing they wanted it to end ASAP in a win for him. That was garbage.

I will never watch another EliteXC fight…this was horrible. Kimbo lost at the end of the 2nd round. Horrible. They are trying to make this look like the WWF…its not! Keep it simple, lose the dancers and fancy entrances. No more Busta Ryhmes…..jeez. All the stuff that we dont want..they shown on national TV. HORRIBLE!

This will set back MMA for a long time to come…Gary Shaw should be ashamed to have that card on TV…First of all when the Baroni vs Villasenor fight was over he told Villasenor to ask for a title shot…He scripted the damn interview…The Carano fight they were talking to each other during the fight…Bad break for them with the Smith vs Lawler fight should have been good but that was turning into a snooze fest!…Kimbo Slice fight I have never in MY LIFE seen someone get stood up right after the side mount…He just got it and the ref stood them up…I was like what the hell is that!…I feel bad for some of the good fighters with that company get the hell out of there and go elsewhere…That was horrible…They should have made a comment like if you want to see real fighters fighting watch the WEC on VS. cause they sure were plugging the hell out of the UFC…Line of the night…Frank Shamrock…The ? was asked Frank who do you have winning this fight…(in a lazy tone) I really dont know…Yes people that was the main event…

I have to believe that somewhere Dana was watching this event and laughing at the poor quality of the product of the entire show (other than Lawler-Smith), if it weren’t so damaging to the world’s view of MMA. Very sad, but it does highlight that UFC has the best fighters and best promotion!
I’m sorry, but was I the only one who saw Kimbo tap twice with his left hand in the first round when he was getting choked out standing up? You clearly see Thompson tell the ref he tapped.
Then, as Kimbo is still in the choke, they pan out to the crowd (????) and he magically gets out of the choke?
Complete farce, I’ll never watch another one of these events again.
Honestly the best part of the show was when James got his ear blasted by kimbo. It was like destroying a pimple that was ready to pop. Kimbo is one lucky son b*tch. Overall the event was horrible. Gina’s fight was good though, and Robbie’s fight was good up until the stoppage. I didn’t really agree with that, hopefully there’s a rematch. Oh well for Gary Shaw’s attempt to destroy the UFC. Hahahahahahahahahaha.
Pretty terrible. If this was my first time watching MMA it probably would have been my last. A couple overmatched fighters, a couple questionable finishes likely wasn’t a good first impression.
Wow. I’m pretty amazed at some of the opinions as I saw a lot of the event’s action completely differently but we’re each entitled to our own opinions. I’ll reply back to everyone’s comments in the AM.

Every time I try to decide what was worse, the dancers, the 15 minute fighter intros, Baroni’s clown antics, the horrible ignorant crowd, the terrible stoppages….it was all a joke.
I will NEVER again watch an ELITEXC event.
Say what you want about UFC’s monopoly on the industry, at least they aren’t dragging MMA down to pro wrestling status.

Heard the outcomes, read the reviews (here) and now I am going to watch the event (DVR). Still have to think that no matter how bad the event was it was FREE. That people who say they will never watch another EliteXC fight may change their minds as future events (FREE) are announced. Lastly, EliteXC might actually listen to the fans vs. other organizations and build upon this foundation (rocky or otherwise). Still cannot argue with FREE.
Now to watch the fights.
Ok so I haven’t read everyones responces because it’s a lot but I have lost a LOT of respect for EliteXC
Scott Smith was told he’d have 5 minutes. If your the doctor and the rule is to give the fighter 5 minutes to recover, why would you ask multiple times if he can see before the 5 minute mark? That makes the 5 minute rule pointless.
Kimbo was hand fed a victory. The first round was close. The second round he lost flat out. And honestly if that was Kimbo in the mounted position raining down elbows and punches to an opponent just covering up for 2 freaking minutes it would have been stopped. I was also amazed at how fast the ref stood both fighters up. Honestly that ref did EVERYTHING he could to MAKE kimbo win that fight. And the stoppage was complete horse ****.

Well I said I would never watch another EliteXC event but I lied. The womens match was awsome. That was the only good part of the whole event. I will tune in to watch Gina fight again.
I know that there are some UFC Heavyweights that are just DYING to come over to the EliteXC and shut Kimbos mouth. If James “Hands Of Feathers” Thompson could do it, imagin what Mir, Vera, or Nog would do to him. I would pay to see that.
After this, I must as all the Dana White haters…..He doesnt look like such a bad guy thats “ruining” this sport anymore now does he? haha
Anyone whose seen Ginko Sudo knows that an interesting entrance is okay, as long as you can fight. Ginko delivered in the ring.

Dana was criticised heavily for being greedy, controlling, power mad, etc. when he wouldn’t bend to the will of major corporate networks, especially CBS and allow them to dictate the content of UFC broadcasts. Last nights EliteXC debocle may have just shown Dana to be a bit of a genius.
To MMA fans like all of us who come and chat on a website …etc etc the event was embarassing in some areas… I think Elite XC was also trying to capture the attention of a new audience, showing that MMA can be exciting and the explanations Frank Shamrock was giving to certain things, was as if, he was explaining it to a 5 year old.
If I were Dana White, I wouldn’t be worried at all but for the sport of MMA in general, I woudn’t say it set it back, it just reached a new audience that no other organization has touched and i think if anything its gonna help draw some curiosity to MMA in general.
The gys ear fell off how can you call that controversy. I’d want someone to stop it if I was going to end up maimed!
Come on people let’s be real. Kimbo has never been promoted as anything but a street fighter. He’s proven that he has some ground knowledge, it’s been what a year since he came to pro fighting. Let’s give him some time. And by the way those elbows he was taking from Dumbo weren’t doing any damage whatsoever, they will only stop a fight if there’s is considerable damage or knock out, neither of which happened, it’s not Kimbo’s fault Thompson couldn’t finish him. I was impressed with pretty much the whole night except for the unbelievable mess the doctor made of the best fight of the night!!! Well Done Elite XC, next time make sure the doctors know the rules.
All I have to say is thank god Dana White didn’t take the CBS deal!!! Where would MMA be if the UFC ended fights that quickly? No one would watch…I know I wouldn’t. Now we know what MMA mixed with WWF looks like…a joke!!! EliteXC is going under and I hope that it goes under soon, probably right after its golden boy Kimbo Slice gets dominated (which he absolutely will) when he fights someone who has actually won a few fights. He almost lost last night to a handpicked tin can…and the funny thing is that the tin can was winning and Kimbo couldn’t beat him, he needed the ref to do it for him. How many TKOs have you seen where the fighter is still standing at the end?
Kimbo needs to work on his carrrrrrrrdiooooooo and hip movement he was gassed (Then again having a 260 pound man laying on you doesn’t help). I didn’t see the phantom tap I saw a nice thumbs up on a crappy standing guillotine. And beyond being pushed up on the fence and taking some weakass elbows near the end of the second found WHICH you saw Kimbo clearly trying to catch and stop those elbows. To my understanding and knowledge that is intelligently defending yourself, I mean given the position he was in defence of himself…The stoppage WASN’t early Thompson took 5 punches in a row stumbled around rolled on the fence, hell he even tried to swing on the ref LOL…I mean yeah it was sloppy, you had two guys who are known strikers ending up on the ground. The guys ear exploding was no reason to syop the fight. Do you think that’s never happened to his ear before? And the stoppage was definetly premature. When you have 2 guys beating eachother’s azz for 2 rounds they deserve to go the distance. Kimbo needs a whole lot of work, did you see how easy Thompson got out of full mount? Hahahaha . Good thing for us he’s 34, he’ll be on the feak show circuit for a few more years then he’ll bite someone’s ear off and be banned for life. I think everyone is forgetting (Kimbo backers) that he fought a guy that lost to the winner of the opening bout! lol Thompson i a scrub, and ge was winning until the early stoppage.

Thompson’s ear was already the size of a sock and hanging off before the fight started. If Kimbo had knocked it off, he’d have been doing him a favour. Sure Thompson had the look in his eyes as if no one was home but he had the same look in the second round. This was definitely fixxed.
Esactly, they stopped it because if he had got that 1 last takedown he would have won. Kimbo would have been flopping around on the mat like a fish out of water for 4 minutes, and the judges would have still gave him the fight.
EliteXC, wow what at joke, I agree with all of you. I’m glad I didn’t stay in to watch it, but had the dvr set. The Gina fight, as sloppy as she was, was prolly the best fight on the card. I loved this review quote, “The main event showcased two mediocre fighters in mediocre condition, though after listening to Johnson, Ranallo and Shamrock, you’d have thought we were watching the MMA equivalent of Ali-Frazier.”
I had a lot of money on kimbo to win this fight only becuase of thompsons glass jaw. I still say this fight and stoppage was a joke, kimbo should’ve lost. The fight should have been stopped in the 2nd round when kimbo was just laying there getting hit. Thompsons punches weren’t effective but still kimbo was doing nothing. Now that I see where kimbo’s skills are really at I’m betting the house against him next time he fights someone with a positive record.

I’m glad I slept on this before commenting. Last night was not impressive. The doctors seem to have forgotten to not only follow the rules but also forgot this is a combat sport. Smith got screwed. I am happy that Kimbo showed his lack of ground game….though he did show some very impressive strength from his back on 2 occasions. Kimbo was likely going to KO Thompson but I feel the ref stepped in a few seconds too early. I felt the ref and Elite XC were doing all they could to keep Kimbo winning and undefeated. Even at one point the 2 fighters were told to stand up when Thompson still had good control on the ground and though not ground and pounding away he should have been given another minute to work. The dancers are annoying and stupid along with Gary Shaw as usual. I cannot find the words to describe how disappointed I was with this event. The whole atmosphere of Elite XC is just dirty mediocre MMA to me. The fighters are hard workers and I know they train hard but the promotion is a joke. Frank Shamrock did a good job explaining MMA but made me feel very elementary. I understand he had to explain MMA to the masses but it was done in a very childish manner. Thank the MMA GODS that WEC is tonight to give me my proper MMA fix.

I watched this fight card last night and i felt that it was good, but the doctors need to stop babying the fighters because it is on national television. This is what these guys (and girls) live for and they are having some crap doctor stop it…
Worst night of jujitsu and ground game ever. I thought elite had a chance to make a move on UFC, but instead they turned the world off to bad MMA.
I can’t believe the announcer said Kimbo had “great jujitsu” at times.
This night was an embarrassment to MMA and lost it a lot of fans.
The UFC needs to get a real MMA card on primetime network quick to reverse the damage.
I’m not saying this was the best fight event I’ve ever seen, but until you can understand what the fighters point of view is and understand all the things they go through, to bash them like most of us do most of the time is unreal. Yes the unfortunate result is that there are things that need to change period, but to mention one thing that seems to be a big point here for a lot of people is the reference to WWE and the way the fighters were introduced. In the UFC the Japanese fighters all come out with crazy ****e on, (yes I know the Japanese culture is deeply proud of their heritage regarding ninja’s and honor and the like but other than laugh at it,people don’t really make a big deal of it. There’s always room for improvement and I genuinely hope that Elite XC learns from this and we as fans get better shows, because really isn’t this about us as fans having more access to MMA and it becoming more main stream. Yes some of this is going to look poorly on the sport but remember this was on prime time and is subject to the same rules as anything else on t.v. We can’t have the cake and eat it too all at once, it’s gonna take time.

Look Larry I agree with you on the fact that most people do not have the experience of actually going through what these fighters do but, I can honestly say I have been through it and were it not for a neck injury I’d be in some small show trying to break through to a big show somewhere. The truth is Kimbo has been over promoted, yes it is as a street fighter but as the announcers said 10,000 times last night “this is MMA” and you have to show more when this is the main event. People need to lay off Kimbo though cause it is not really his fault he’s been so over promoted but now that he’s shown weakness people are all over him. He should have at least been allowed to finish the fight because Thompson looked the same in the second round and that was the definition of a 10-8 round for Thompson. I do have to disagree with someone who said Kimbo tapped because he did not, he was throwing the thumbs up sign to the ref who asked him if he was good to go(I thought the same until I watched it again). To be honest if Thompson had been able to sit back it would have applied more pressure and taken Kimbo to the mat, but that being said he did not or just couldn’t. This just did not deserve a main event. Kimbo has a lot to prove because of his accumulated prestige(whether deserved or not) and until he has improved his conditioning and started defeating solid fighters he will just be a spectacle. I mean really you’d rather have this as a main event than a title fight? That’s an insult to their title holders.
Hey Chris, a lot of what you say is true and I think that because of the promoting Kimbo to be a street fighter they may be trying to associate him with a more common way of fighting. Let’s be honest, not many people know what BJJ is let alone a Kimora or a GO GO plata and the sort. Kimbo does have some training to do but who doesn’t, everyone loses. As far as being the main event, yeah I agree it should have been the middleweight fight that was made a farce of but Elite is trying to market Kimbo as their hood ornament and build it around him, kind of like a “Franchise Player” only not. WE’re all of us going to have different opinions on these fights but I personally think that Kimbo put a decent show on last night and if the fight hadn’t stopped when it did, Mr Thompson might have a little more to worry about today than a little vertigo. Kimbo said he was going for the ear and on National Prime time TV for the first show do you honestly think someone being possibly disfigured or worse, no I think not. But again, this is only my opinion. And yes I have been in the ring a time or two.

I was watching Womens College Softball (ASU team is HOTT!) on ESPN and that had like a 3 min convo on it after the game and cut over to the ESPN studio. Dana White was interveiwed for a little over a min and he said it was horrible. White did say MMA belongs on TV, but like he said it was horrible. Thompson got hit with punches and staggered back a couple other times in that fight and the ref didn’t stop it. Then Thompson took him down. I think that would’ve happened again. Obviously Thompson still had some fight left he gave the ref a face wash. It was an early stop. Gina’s fight I enjoys and Lawler/Smith I enjoyed.
kimbo tapped at 1:29 of the first round. watch it again! there was no “thumbs up” he claearly tapped. also if he had give the “thumbs up” how would james thompson feel? at 1:29 of the 1st round he taps 3 times and the ref says nothing! then the then mauro and frank say “he is giving the thumbs up he is ok”! bull****! watch it again!
