Strikeforce 10 PosterUndefeated lightweight up-and-comer Billy Evangelista (6-0) will square off against fellow-lightweight veteran Nam Phan (14-4) at Strikeforce “Melendez vs. Thomson” on June 27th in San Jose, California.

The bout was officially announced by the promotion on Monday.

A wrestling and jiu-jitsu fighter, Evangelista has not been defeated in six professional fights. A veteran of both Strikeforce and the WEC, Evangelista, who fights out of Fresno, California, defeated Marlon Sims via third-round knockout in his last fight in March. He’ssecured four of his six victories via knockout with the other two coming by way of judge’s decision.

“I don’t really have a game plan for Nam Phan and I’ve never seen him fight,” said Evangelista. “I know he’s good on the ground, though, so I just need to be prepared for anything that comes.”

A veteran of Strikeforce, the WEC, and King of the Cage, Phan is riding a two-fight winning streak into his matchup against Evangelista and has won nine of his last eleven overall. His two losses over the span were to notables Josh Thomson, who headlines the June 27th event against Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez, and Gesias “JZ” Calvancante. He last fought in February, defeating Saad Awad via second-round TKO.

“It should be a great matchup,” said Phan. “I know (Evangelista)’s pretty good at wrestling and ok at Jiu-Jitsu and he’s got great Muay Thai. I think his striking is better than mine, but my strength is Jiu-Jitsu. I always prefer Jiu-Jitsu and submitting opponents.”
