Brian StannBrian Stann (6-0), who captured the WEC Light Heavyweight Championship with a first-round TKO of Doug Marshall in March at WEC 33, will attempt his first title defense in a rematch against Steve Cantwell at WEC 35.

Stann dispatched Cantwell (5-1) in their first meeting via TKO in just 41-seconds at WEC 26 in early-2007. Following the victory, Stann has defeated Craig Zellner, Jermiah Billington, and Marshall to capture the promotion’s 205-pound title. Meanwhile, Cantwell has rebounded from his first professional loss with first-round wins over Justin McElfresh and Tim McKenzie.

WEC 35 takes place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 3rd and will be broadcast live on Versus.

Other rumored bouts for the event include WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner taking on Marcus Hicks and Carlos Condit defending his WEC welterweight title against an opponent to-be-determined.

I wonder how a guy like Brian Stann would hold up against the UFC LHW class ??????????

  • tony says:

i would like to see that happen.

  • Dale says:

I say this guy and Rashaad Evans

  • 2girls1cup says:

he’d prolly do alright, but by no means do i think he’d be top 5, maybe not even top 10 ufc 205’s. for the most part, he seems like a good striker but i haven’t seen much ground game from him.

  • Jason says:

WEC 35 could be great… Stann vs. Cantwell…Filho vs. Sonnen. Varner vs. Hicks. Condit vs. ? Would they put fpur titles on the line on one card??? I think they have before. I’d say two or three of those will happen for sure.

  • Jason says:

Brian Stann is good. The crowd loves him. I can’t help but root for him, but I don’t know how he’d do in the UFC yet. He could fight a stand up guy and do okay, even a Liddell, Wanderlei, Forrest or Jardine. However against Rampage, Shogun, or Machida or even Matt Hammil, I don’t know how he’d do. I’d like to see Stann vs. Houston Alexander

Totally forgot about Filho-Sonnen, that’s definitely a possibility too. Right now they’re only doing cards every 2+ months so they could put four titles on the line at this event. I’m kind of surprised they went back to Vegas so quick considering the success of the Sacramento event but a stacked card could be very popular in Vegas or elsewhere.

Hey gentlemen.. Brian has agreed to an interview.. I have just had a hard time catching him yet..

I personally think he is a good fighter and with the power in his hands and training with the best in Nevada now I believe he will round out his game just in time for make some noise in the UFC. I believe he has potential to be Top 5.. with some explosive results.

As soon as I get the interview you can check it out here on MMA Frenzy.com
