I agree willis. Hughes comes off as a prick on TUF…I think thats just his way of training. If you dont like it, then leave…thats his train of thought. Thats how Pat Miletich trains so why wouldnt Hughes? Matt Hughes has believes that he sticks to, thats all there is to it. If anything, Matt Hughes is the most original person in the UFC. If they told him to start tanning and coming down to 2pac or sumthing…i bet he would tell them to **** off.

I actually think Matt Hughes is not a prick. He has the typical alpha male cocky side, but then again who doesn’t? He fights in cages and has beaten (soundly) a Gracie! He deserves to be cocky and walk a little taller…!

I see Hughes beating Serra but I am hoping it is a really good fight above everything else. St. Pierre has Hughes’ number while Serra and St-Pierre are split 1-1 (though that last win by St-Pierre was very dominating, not that Serra’s wasn’t too) and I’d like to see St-Pierre fight Serra for the belt in NYC before I see Hughes fight St-Pierre again.

Beyond that I think Fitch earned a title shot. I’m undecided if I really want to see that as I think GSP takes it handily but I he earned it and that is surely next. Beyond that, Karo is definitely still in the picture as is Koscheck and Diego Sanchez. It’s a pretty open division for contenders right now and someone will set themselves apart from the crowd.

Chris – You’re right on. There are a lot of characters in MMA that just rub people the wrong way but if there’s a fighter with the credentials like Hughes has you have to respect that, regardless of their personality.

They are both in very similar situations but both can be really good gatekeepers a still challenge for the title here and there. If their bodies hold up and they continue to have the will to fight like someone like Couture, the could both fight another 10 years. That’s a long time.

Who knows, Silva or St. Pierre could lose the title then either could challenge the new champion before fighting the original champion again or the opponents they just can’t seem to beat may leave and sign elsewhere and all of a sudden they might be at the top of the division again.

There’s definitely reasons for both to stick around between what I outlined or moving weight classes and fighting some new opponents they may not have fought before. I’d gladly watch either of them fight, no matter their opponent.

Dirty I agree! They are both in a weird situation for a fighter. Both are pretty much the #2 guy, and no one wants to see either fight the champ…

I think Hughes and Franklin are in a similar spot right now. The champs in their divisions just have their number.

Great interview! Matt Hughes is one of the greatest fighters in the history of MMA, and as long as he stays in the game he will always be one of the best. Even after that he will be training the next generation of elite athletes. Great article, i cant think of a single question i would’ve asked that you didn’t.
