After successfully making his middleweight debut earlier this month, Eric Schafer will return to the UFC to replace an injured Nick Catone and face Aaron Simpson on short-notice at UFC 136 on October 8 in Houston, Texas, Simpson announced Friday.
Schafer (12-5-2) was released by the UFC for the second time following losses to Ryan Bader and Jason Brilz from 2009 and 2010 before ending a year-and-a-half layoff on Sept. 3 with a submission win in just 1:41 on the regional circuit.
Simpson (9-2) has rebounded from back-to-back losses to Chris Leben and Mark Munoz with unanimous decision wins over Mario Miranda and Brad Tavares in 2011.
UFC 136 is headlined by a pair of title fights, as lightweight champion Frankie Edgar rematches Gray Maynard and featherweight champ Jose Aldo faces Kenny Florian.
