Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir Rematch Set for UFC 140

Posted by on Sep 7, 2011 at 6:40 pm ET14 Comments

Frank MirFresh off his “Knockout of the Night” of Brendan Schaub at UFC 134, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will rematch fellow former heavyweight champion Frank Mir at UFC 140 in the likely co-main event of the December 10 event in Toronto.

Mir knocked out Nogueira in the second-round of their first meeting in 2008 to win the interim heavyweight title.

Nogueira’s (33-6-1) first-round KO of Schaub came a year-and-a-half on the sidelines after undergoing hip surgery following his loss to Cain Velasquez in early 2010, while Mir (15-5) is coming of back-to-back wins over Mirko Cro Cop last September and Roy Nelson in May.

The UFC 140 fight card also includes Rory MacDonald vs. Brian Ebersole, Rich Attonito vs. Claude Patrick, and John Cholish vs. Mitch Clarke.

thats great, im excited… i hope NOG gets real ready for this guy cause frank is good, i like them both :)

  • Frank Mir is going to kick Nogs ass again believe it!

I am not a fan of all of these rematches where there was a previous definitive victor. Rematch Rampage and Machida-that makes sense. But don’t jump to rematches because someone said they were sick, or someone gassed out, like Carwin against Brock, or Shogun against Forrest. Nog got destroyed the first time. Frank deserves another opponent but unfortunately, they still aren’t that deep with HW contenders.

      • KEVSMITT says:

Agreed. Even though I believe Nog wasn’t on his game for that fight, there are still other match-ups that make more sense in the division for both these guys. I wouldn’t want to see this again until it was a number one contemder’s fight. The winner of this could make an argument to be the next number one contender, but they would have to be on the shelf for a long time considering the winner of Brock/Overeem is next in line for a shot. They would likely have to face either the loser of JDS/Cain or Brock/Overeem to make a legitimate claim to a shot.

      • Benny says:

Agreed 100%. I have ZERO desire to see this fight personally.

  • learntoread says:

No surprise here, let’s hope both fighters can come in healthy this time around.

This has been kind of a strange MMA day.
Ever since their first fight MMA fans have been calling for Mir-BigNog 2.
Now that the org has announced the where and when, the social media fan response has been relatively underwhelming.

As a longtime Mir fan and having much respect for what BigNog has accomplished in MMA I’m fine seeing these 2 go again.
But I have to admit to their not being much point in it and I totally understand the fanbase waving this one off.
Mir seems to have most of BigNog’s skillset without having all that PRIDE mileage and recovery baggage.
Mir is physically superior and has been working on polishing his wrestling skills, something BigNog has never really displayed a lot of.

I never want to disrespect and/or discount a legend like BigNog, but this seems like he’s pointlessly signing on for another loss just when his career got a much-needed boost in Rio…

Guys come on theirs is somthing in the mix here but we wont c the big picture till its done matt m.is taking on kongo winners could face eachother that would take enough time for both fights to happen and some im not zuffa or j.s and not dana but their is somthing big happening

  • Jyri says:

I really REALLY hope Big Nog stays in shape.

  • ddavis says:

I dont get how people are saying this fight dosent make sense and they dont wanna see it?? It makes perfect sense! all these heavyweight matchups are perfect and are gonna interwine with each other perfectly, only one question remains……where does shane carwin fit into all this??

    • Newfie says:

Some don’t want to see this fight bc the last fight had a definitive winner and they would rather see both these guys facing someone else. You mentioned Mitrione vs Kongo, well I guess it could have been Mir vs Mitrione (I believe Matt has mentioned Frank a few times) and Big Nog vs Kongo. Personally I don’t mind it, I’m interested in how the fight will go down, if it’ll be any different if Nog is healthy.

  • Avatar of Eldiablo Eldiablo says:

I’m half excited for this. I’m excited to see Big Nog fight, hopefully live, but Mir leaves a bit to be desired these days.

Mir is fresh off back to back snorefests.

Nog’s last 2 wins have been very exciting, throw in a Cain KO, and there’s not a boring fight since Mir/Nog the first.

Mir is essentially now a bigger, stronger version of Big Nog. But Big Nog has that certain “i don’t know what”.

Mir’s more likely to get in a motorcycle accident, Nog’s more likely to get run over by a truck. Trucks usually win vs motorcycles, so I give Nog the sub win.

  • Big Red says:

Personally I’ve been a Frank Mir fan since his first fight with Brock Lesnar. If this is the fight that will get him closer to the belt, I guess he’s going to have to whoop Nog again.

    GO FRANK MIR
