As expected, Josh Koscheck will replace an injured Diego Sanchez and return to the Octagon against former welterweight champion Matt Hughes in the co-main event of UFC 135 on September 24 in Denver, Colorado, UFC President Dana White confirmed Tuesday.
Koscheck, who had been targeted for a middleweight fight with Ed Herman at November’s UFC 139, agreed to the matchup hours after Sanchez withdrew from the bout with a broken hand, but awaited approval from Hughes and the UFC. Earlier Tuesday, Hughes said he had also agreed to face Koscheck’s teammate Jon Fitch.
Koscheck (15-5) hasn’t fought since dropping a unanimous decision to welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre in December after suffering a broken orbital in the bout, while Hughes (45-8) is looking to rebound from a 21-second KO loss to BJ Penn in November that followed three-straight wins.
The UFC 135 fight card is headlined by light heavyweight champion Jon Jones vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
