Popular UFC fighter and former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz has been drug tested by the Nevada State Athletic Commission in advance of his main card bout against Lyoto Machida at UFC 84 on May 24th in Las Vegas, according to MMA Weekly.
Ortiz’s test results were negative.
UFC 84 headliners Sean Sherk, who previously tested positive for steroids following a UFC lightweight title defense in California last July, and BJ Penn have also tested clean in pre-event drug tests.

as a tito fan i hope he kicks machida’s ass but as a bigger ufc fan i hope machida wins this just on the fact that tito is leaveing the ufc and a win for tito would not be good for one of the highly rated fighters the ufc has, knowing that another organization has a fihter that can beat his ass,
ive got tito winning this one by tko round 2 which is bad news for the ufc.
That was Hermes Franca that tested positive NOT BJ. That needs to be corrected.
it would shock me if tito finished machida. tito hasnt finished anyone not called shamrock since 2001. i think titos best shot is decision. other than that i think machida has the edge.
If Tito wins this fight do you think he would really walk away from the UFC, I think Machida is going to win but I’ve grown to like Tito after his TUF coaching performance.
Machida by strikes in the 2nd round.
LOL @ Machida by strikes! He’s 1 of the most boring fighters ever, and has only won once by strikes. If Tito loses by strikes I will kick my own A$$!
I never said BJ tested positive, I said Sherk did.
ya, that read like sherk and bj tested positive. i can see it either way, but if i was new to the sport i’d think it was both that tested positive… until i saw a pic of bj penn, lol. that guy only tests positive for naps. i love him though, prolly top 3 favorites to watch. i hope he stays at 155. actually, it’d be cool if he went up to 185 to kill bisping.
Well the story has since been edited because it did say:
UFC 84 headliners Sean Sherk and BJ Penn, who previously tested positive for steroids following a UFC lightweight title defense in California last July, and BJ Penn have also tested clean in pre-event drug tests.
It previously said “UFC headliners BJ Penn and Sean Sherk, who previously tested positive for steroids following a UFC lightweight title defense in California last July, have also tested clean in pre-event drug tests.”
I see where it could have been confusing but it was referring only to Sherk, not to both of them. I changed it so it’s more clear now that it was Sherk and not Penn/both.
whoopi who cares is it that big of a deal?
Machida is going to own Tito, thats all there is to it. Tito is going to go to another organization where he has a better chance at winning.
Thanks for the correction Kris.
Joel B. I was only letting Kris know so there is no confusion for those NEW to MMA.
It’s all GOOD.
I also agree with JOHNBOY (the first post).
It’s a pretty sad commentary when guys testing clean makes the news headlines.
In response to Java, I think this is important personally because this is the first time the NSAC has used the out of competition testing policy on a Mixed Martial Artist. This will probably continue to be news due to the fact that this is NEW, and should be reported due to the fact that it is activity-related to the mixed martial arts community….Now what I am waiting to see is the first person to fail this testing policy and see how it snowballs from there.
No, I’m aware of the significance of the new policy, I think it’s just indicative of the current state of all sports where juicing has become so “the norm” that someone passing a test is news.
true that. it is a sad state of affairs that the guy NOT on roids is hailed in the headlines instead of the guy who IS on the juice bein the story. Props to all the guys who play by the rules!!
The negative test isn’t really that big of news but the fact that they’re testing before an event, as well as after, says something I think. Personally I love the new policy because I’d rather have a fight scrapped or have the promoter find a replacement fighter than to have a fight go on only to have it erased when someone tests positive.
Lyoto to finish Tito by TKO in the second round. Tito can dodge him for the first to save his pride but the outcome is inevitable. Tito’s days are long over…
tito wants to take it to take it to the ground so i think if loyoto 2nd round submission
