Tatsuya Kawajiri Dropping to Featherweight, Faces Joachim Hansen at DREAM 17

Tatsuya KawajiriFormer Strikeforce lightweight contender Tatsuya Kawajiri will drop to featherweight when he meets Joachim Hansen at DREAM 17 on September 24 in Saitama Japan.

Kawajiri rebounded from a loss to Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez with a victory over long-time MMA veteran Drew Fickett at DREAM: Fight for Japan! 2 back in July. The 33-year old fighter will be looking to revitalize a career after losing in attempts at the Strikeforce and DREAM lightweight championships.

The “Crusher” is known for his dominant ground and pound in addition to his strong wrestling and judo.

The promotion also announced the matchups for its world bantamweight grand prix on Friday, featuring Hideo Tokoro vs. Antonio Banuelos, Bibiano Fernandes vs. Takafumi Otsuka, Masakazu Imanari vs. Abel Cullum, and Rodolfo Marques vs. Yusup Saadulaev.

Marking the promotion’s first event using standard three, five-minute rounds, DREAM 17 does not yet have a North American broadcast scheduled.

DREAM 17 also includes a non-title bout between lightweight champion Shinya Aoki and Rob McCullough, Caol Uno vs. Takeshi Inoue, and Satoru Kitaoka vs. Willamy Freire.
