Mir, Nogueira Possible Coaches For TUF 8
UFC Heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and former UFC champion Frank Mir may be the next set of coaches to participate in the eighth season of “The Ultimate Fighter”, which is set to feature lightweights and light heavyweights. The potential coaching pair are on the short list of candidates according to MMA Junkie, who contacted a source close to the show following rumors that they had already signed on for the positions.
The casting naturally implies that Mir would be getting a title shot at Nogueira once the eighth season wraps up, though it’s a bit of an odd move on the UFC’s part for a couple of reasons. First, I don’t know how camera-friendly Nogueira will be since his English, while understandable, is not exactly crystal clear. Additionally I am not entirely sold on the idea that Frank Mir is the rightful number one contender at this stage in the game. Not to mention the fact that as far as I know, Mir is still scheduled to fight Justin McCully at UFC 86 in July. Also what ever happened to Vera vs. Werdum deciding the number one contender spot? That almost seemed like a reasonable option.
Any how, while Frank Mir has had a few shining moments in the past, I cannot say that he has already earned his place back at the top of the HW division yet again. Since returning to MMA competition after a debilitating motorcycle accident, Mir would definitively lose to Marcio Cruz, beat Dan Christison, get TKO’d in the first minute by Brandon Vera, and defeat Antoni Hardonk. Mir would go on to submit MMA newcomer Brock Lesnar which was fun to watch, but in my opinion it is simply not enough throw him back into the number one contender spot. Though to be fair, I do think that Mir would make for a solid TUF coach as he has always come off as a sharp guy who I imagine would be a very capable instructor.

Mir will be a solid opponent for Nog. Even though I agree that he does not yet deserve it he will match up great and has a great chance of winning. Maybe in a stand up war since both are great submission artists. Nog is know to take a beating but not very impressive in his last couple of fights. Mir has not been that good either. Well the HW division is not the most exciting to watch anyways. Randy where are you when we need you man.
What is up with Arlovski? Is he done with the UFC. Arlovski was always my favourite HW. I wish Couture would get over himself and Dana would stop being a cheap prick. Then perhaps Couture, the Emelianenko brothers, Arlovski, etc… could all be fighting in the UFC. Mir/Nogueira is not a draw that will sell a lot of tickets. Go GSP!
I like Mir and I think he won over ALOT of fans with the Lesnar defeat. I dont like Nog, and I think he is not the greatest fighter in the world.
Mir/Nog would be a good fight but I dont think that Mir could stand with Nogueira.Nog has great stand up and they both rock on the ground.I think it would go into the 3rd with Nog winning with a knock out.I dont see how Mir gets a shot before Kongo,Vera, and maybe even Heath after one or two mroe fights.
boil and bubble I smell trouble, mir would get his neck cracked like a peice of rubble
MIR, although popular, definitely doesn’t deserve a title shot yet, even if he beats McCully…. HERRING doesn’t deserve another shot yet and even if he did, they’ve fought so many times already …. KONGO is boring and just lost anyway…. I think that the winner of VERA vs VERDUM is the only fair choice for a title shot……. pretty sad because Vera lost to Silva and Verdum bored us with his Arlovski loss but also impressed over Gonzaga. the HW division is pretty weak and boring in my opinion……
LESNAR would obviously be an exciting contender but hes got a long way to go …. GONZAGA another popular exciting fighter, has to climb back up the ladder again …
First off Mir would be a great coach. who ever said frank could not stand with nogueira is nuts. nogueira stand up isnt that impressive his ground is top notch but stand up?…not so much. also in a rematch vera would lose to Mir easy. now..i do like vera i just believe he belongs in lightheavy.
im a little bit tired of the title holders being made to wait to defend for the sake of a tv show.
Mir surprised a lot of people with the win against Lesnar, but i think other people should be ahead of him (herring, vera, verdum, kongo, gonzaga). whatever happened to fighting the best guys in the division to earn a title shot. what happens if by some miracle, he justin mcully beats him. is he gonna get a title shot following a loss? that just makes no sense. SIGN MORE HEAVYWEIGHTS!!!
I don’t see how vera could still be a contender he is all talk and I thought he was going to move down to Light Heavyweight.
mir is gonna kick this dudes a** so hard hes gonna kick him in the forehead
I dont see this happening. It might be discussed, but I doubt it will come to fruition.
Mir should hold on and fight the winner of the Vera/Werdum fight. Whoever says whoever wins the Vera/Werdum fight should get a title shot is confused. I’m kinda confused on how everybodys saying that herring, vera, verdum, kongo, gonzaga should get a title shot before frank mir….
Frank mir just beat a man who was looked at to destroy the division.
Herring just lost, vera just lost, gonzaga just lost, kongo just lost, and Werdum doesn’t have enoough fights in the ufc to deserve it.
This is just my opinion, Mir is #1 contender hands down.
Mir is currently the HW with the best credentials to fight, plus his good looks make him a big draw.
First, he lost the title via motorcycle accident. He was never defeated as champ.
Second, I…err…he initially had a shaky comeback, but has beat two opponents via first round submission in his last two fights.
Finally, He IS scheduled to fight Justin McCully at 86 in July. Maybe the UFC will be dramatic and ask him after his win if he’d accept the coaching position and the title shot to which he could happily accept after another 1st round submission victory over “Insane 1″.
P.S. Tim Sylvia deserves a rematch, but he’s got a match with Fedor now so that is null in this discussion.
*Also, Arlovski should be gobbled up by UFC if it is not too late. The could promote the **** out of him, get him a sweet coaching gig. Now that’d be sweet.
*Also, I was at 81 rooting for Mir and Sylvia (not Silva as noted above re: Vera) Mir won and Sylvia lost. Sylvia knew he was done when he lost to big Nog. I have no idea why, but a lot of people boo Sylvia for no reason. He can be fun to watch, but not always, yet he’s one of the best in the world…why ever boo the man. UFC fans, shame on yourself for not appreciating a good thing when you had it. NOW watch Tim beat Fedor and the UFC can cry a river.
I think Mir should get the title shot considering he stepped up, the fought someone that alot of heavyweight would not fight.
Hamster,
Herring didn’t lose he beat Kongo, and the only resin Vera in the list he beat Mir after his comeback.
Mir can beat Nog. stand up game and BJJ game!
To hamsterwheel:
I see your confusion as to most of the names suggested for title shots, EXCEPT for you saying that Herring just lost. He actually pulled off an surprising and hard fought win over Kongo (who you mention losing, so I’m not sure if you were talking about Herring having just lost to Nogeira or what; even then, if he wouldn’t have hesitated he woulda spoiled Nog’s debut big time) at UFC 82, so (sadly) I think he would actually be at the top of that list of people given, even if none of them really deserve it yet. I like the idea of Werdum/Vera winner fighting Mir to determine the spot, unless of course by some miracle Randy returns sometime soon.
Arlovski has already signed with affliction and is on the same card Fedor/Sylvia.that fight card is sick.def better then ufc 83.if you can check it out.def worth renting
the affliction card is not complete yet. arlovski is not official yet. just the fedor and sylvia fight.
