MMA Chatter: Jon Fitch On Getting A Title Shot, Serra-GSP, and Changing Weight Classes

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Apr 17, 2008 at 10:00 am ET18 Comments

Chris Fries and The JDH of Tagg Radio’s The Lights Out Show interviewed top UFC welterweight contender, Jon Fitch on their last show (volume 113). Jon is obviously very interested in this weekend’s Serra/GSP fight, since he will likely be facing the winner. Here are some excerpts from the show.

ON GETTING A TITLE SHOT NEXT

“The only way I could see not getting a title shot is if they push the (Matt) Hughes vs (Matt) Serra fight for a title (if Serra beats St. Pierre).”

ON WHO WILL WIN SERRA/GSP 2

“St. Pierre is going to find a way to put him (Serra) away by the end of the second (round).”

ON MOVING UP IN WEIGHT

Many of you may not know, but Fitch has fought as big as 205, with many of his fights coming in at 185. Here’s what he had to say when asked if he would consider moving up to 185 again when the time was right.

“Yeah. I don’t want to fight the same six guys ten times. A lot of times rematches and trilogies are a waste. You got to mix it up a little bit.”

Jon also speaks out on Karo Parisyan allegedly “ducking” Fitch before and if Karo deserved a title shot had he beaten Thiago Alves.

Just let St-Pierre destroy Fitch so I can stop hearing about him deserving a title shot……..

Give him a shot and then he can go play somewhere else for a while …….

  • Lord Mark says:

Wow Dirty! Counting your GSP eggs before they’ve hatched. Let GSP try to beat Serra before you start runnning your mouth!

    Go Serra!

  • Jason N. says:

Fitch is a good fighter…he would give GSP a match….and it WILL be gsp…Serra got lucky… but hey, if he wins again I will admit im wrong, but I cant see him beating gsp again…BUT if he does, i would not be surprised if its hughes/serra for his next match….but i think regardless – serra’s next fight will be vs hughes which im looking fwd to more than gsp/serra

  • jim danniels says:

So sick of hearing about Fitch earning a title shot. Who’s his biggest win against (Sanchez). Why on earth does he jump over Hughes, Serra, & Kos. I think it’s crap those guys from the same camp refusing to fight each other. That’s an easy way to claim yourself title worthy. I think Swick deserves a title shot, because he can jump Kos & Fitch (same team) than just say GSP is scarred to get punched. Title shot.

  • jim danniels says:

Who in their right mind would pay $50 to see GSP abuse Fitch (saying he beats Serra). Didn’t we just get done watching two far superior wrestlers try to fight GSP. What’s Fitch bring to the table differently?

  • Dirty says:

Bottom line, no matter who wins with Serra vs St-pierre just give Fitch his title shot and shut him up….

  • Jason N. says:

Who has Fitch defeated?!?!? Come on..the list is better than KOS…and KOS is prob my fav fighter… fitch beat – Diego, Roan Carnerio, Fioravanti (who is going to be main even vs diego on fight night…boring), Thiago Alves (who just beat Karo), Josh Burkman, Brock Larson, Shonie Carter…. I believe he is what…12…13-0 in the UFC…something close to that….you cant tell me thats not worthy of a title fight… who should be in front of him?? Hughes? Uh..did you not just see him get his ass handed to him vs GSP in his last fight….KOS? He just lost to GSP then beat a no namer…that doesnt give him a realistic title shot for his next fight… Karo? just lost, so no….Alves? He lost to fitch, so why should he jump over Fitch?

Just use simple logic….Fitch is #1 contender right now whether you want to admit it or not.. will he beat GSP? Prob not….would he beat Serra? Possibly…but regardless…he deserves a shot … i mean, did Serra really deserve a title shot just bc he won on a REALITY show?!? (which by the way…it was a show of has beens and the best has been gets a shot…come on!!)

So if no one complains about him getting that shot, and not getting the benefit of the doubt… then no one should say anything about fitch… people thought serra would get killed….he won.. people now think fitch would get killed…. but thats the beauty of MMA…ANYONE can win…

  • Jason N. says:

What I would like to see is the winner of GSP/Serra (assuming its gsp) is GSP vs Fitch – the winner gets the winner of KOS vs Alves.

The have Hughes fight Serra – winner fights Karo (or possibly Diego) then the winner of that would get the winner of Fitch vs GSP (or Serra)

But you can also throw in the winner of Swick/Davis….have that winner face Anthony Johnson…maybe….he is only 5-1 with 1 notable win vs Speer, but that really isnt saying much… but everyone needs a start somewhere!

  • revjames13 says:

Now that Karo lost to Alves, nothing could be more clear than Fitch being next in line. He should be an easy win for GSP but could give Serra trouble. If Karo was smart he’s start calling out Kos, because he needs a big win over a top 5 to get back in the mix. Swick/Davis is a great idea. I see Swick as a legit contender at 170. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him in there with GSP in about 18 months.

  • mj says:

i do think Fitch is a good fighter but he really hasnt beat anyone to special.I mean the only fighter with any skill would be sanchez.there are alot of welterweights that could deserve a title shot.Fitch needs one more fight before he gets shot.Def has to be a big name figher.someone like KOs would be a huge test of strengh and wrestling.Alves would give hime trouble and others like Karo,Hughes.S o pretty much that means he get whooped against Gsp and maybe have a slim chance with Serra.for all you talking about Serra check out his record in the UFC and watch some of his fights.this dude is foreal and seems like a alright dude. This fight could go the distance.

  • 2girls1cup says:

i think the bottom line is that the 170’s are completely different than they were 1-2 years ago when the class had like 5 people at any given time that were title worthy. i agree with everyone saying that fitch doesn’t deserve a shot next because i really don’t think his record reflects as much as you would think. on the other hand, the class has kinda shrunk in terms of contenders so it might actually make sense to put him in since everyone has a mark against them. but 12 or 13-0 alone doesn’t mean much to me considering how much crap huerta takes and his record is just as good if not better. if gsp wins, i’d actually like to see a rematch with BJ Penn considering how close that fight was. If he still has the 155 belt at the time (and he should) then i think it would be a better fight than the first cuz i feel he’d be more motivated. and when he wants something, he gets it. in case anyone forgot, i hate bisping, just throwin that in there.

  • Brandon says:

I think Fitch does deserve a title shot. He man handled Diego and I was shocked to see it go split dicision. I also feel that GSP would beat him much in the fashion that he beat Kos only fitch isn’t as fast with his hands as Kos is. What Fitch brings to the table that Koschek didn’t is that he is a LOT bigger and stronger. Kos and Diego are near the same size and Fitch dwarfed Diego. I think aside from GSP Fitch is the biggest WW the UFC has size wise. Also he’s a really scrappy fighter. But he’s now what? 7-0 in the UFC, dispite a few of those wins coming from potential noones no one else in the WW division boasts that record. And Fitch did just beat Diego who was concidered title worthy by quite a few people. So in the long story short I do think he deserves a shot, and after he looses it can set up a good fight between him and Karo/Alves/Hughes (if he’s still around)/ Serra and many more that he hasnt fought yet.

  • SOLO says:

go serra!!!! u can do it!!!

  • Jason N. says:

Hey MJ – how can you say Fitch hasnt fought anyone special except for Diego…then a couple sentences later you say “Alves would give hime trouble and others like Karo”

No offense, but you obviously dont know what you are talking about because if you did, you would know that Fitch DID fight Alves and he beat Alves…

Regardless….people need to stop saying anything negative about Fitch…they guy doesnt need to rattle off more wins to become what he already is now, the #1 contender…he doesnt have the big name like Hughes….or even as big as KOS and diego’s name due to the show…but he could beat all of those guys…probably….I dont like saying that since im a KOS fan and he did well vs GSP, but Fitch is very tough….just give the guy his title shot……just like they need to give Huerta his title shot….and why not do that in Aug??? It will be at home for him (well..where he trains) and they already have rumors that Sherk will be fighting then too, so it will be enough time for the winner of sherk and penn to rest and get ready…..thats just my opinion…

  • mman says:

Fitch has earned his chance at the title, but GSP will put him away in a similar fashion as he did Kosh. Fitch is a tough as nails guy but GSP is at another level.

I say let this fight happen and once BJ puts Sherk away let Roger Huerta get his chance at Penn. Once Gsp and Penn defend their belts then let us see a super match of GSP vs Penn!

  • Jason N. says:

That isnt the super fight I want to see… ive seen penn/gsp…wasnt off the charts by any means….i would rather see gsp vs the spider.. anderson silva….that would be great!

  • revjames13 says:

GSP Silva isn’t a real fight, it’s a fantasy fight, while GSP/Penn is practically inevitable. Now that Penn is at the top of his game, the rematch could be one of the greatest fights in MMA history. It would be five rounds this time, for conceivably the P4P title. I wouldn’t put either ahead of Silva right now, but you never know what could happen between now and then, Silva could lose a lot of luster if someone found a way to beat him. He looks invincible right now, but I can’t seem to get the image of a dehydrated Lutter mounted and raining down punches on him. I think he’s potentially vulnerable to two guys he’s already beaten: Marquardt and Lutter. Henderson, not so much, because he doesn’t have the submissions either of those guys have. If BJ and GSP remain undefeated until they face off it could very well be for the P4P title. And that’s the very definition of a superfight.

  • 2girls1cup says:

I’d prefer a 3 way latter match between the prodigy, the spider and rush. winner takes all the belts!!
