Report: Tim Sylvia To Face Fedor Emelianenko In July

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Apr 8, 2008 at 4:15 pm ET24 Comments

From Sherdog:

“Top ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will fight Tim Sylvia on July 19. The Russian mixed martial arts champion confirmed the bout to Sherdog.com on Tuesday.

HDNet Fights CEO Andrew Simon declined to comment on the report, however sources indicate the bout will air on the Mark Cuban-owned network and is rumored to be promoted by Affliction, a clothing brand closely tied to MMA.

“[Sylvia] is a good fighter, a strong fighter, the former UFC heavyweight champion, which is important,” Emelianenko said via telephone from Stary Oskol, Russia. “I am looking forward to fighting him and training hard for this fight.”

While Emelianenko was short on details, Sherdog.com has learned through sources close to the negotiations that Fedor-Sylvia would headline a card tentatively scheduled for the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, the home base of HDNet Fights.”

While this bout is certainly no Coutre vs. Emelianenko, I’ll happily take it. Fedor-Sylvia should prove to be a very interesting and very marketable match up, though to be honest I don’t give Sylvia much of a chance. It’s also nice to see Fedor Emelianenko return to decent level competition, which could do wonders for his teetering pound-for-pound ranking.

F****** get in there now big tim has got the chance to show the world what a **** fedor is cant wait to watch this fight sylvia to win via knock thef*** out in round 1. thank you for makeing this fight mark or who ever made it haha GO TIM KNOCK THIS PRICK ON HIS ARSE!!!

  • tony says:

fedor would beat sylvia on an off day.

  • Nico says:

Wow how the hell did Tim manage to get this fight. Dana White is probably pist that it did not happen in the UFC. Even though Tim is not my favorite heavyweight I hope he knocks him the f*$# out. This will be a good indication about how well Randy will do with Fedor. Randy might build ring rust if he does not fight soon.

  • M3 says:

Alright We get to see the great one fight again!
JOHNBOY how do you think that Fador would ever lose this fight! look at record man on paper Tim Has no chance! but in mma 1 lucky punch could turn the tided but not likely… Im glad he got this fight hes one of the ufc’s top 10 hw fighters time for Fador to cut though them all even if its not in the ufc.

  • Eddyr92806 says:

This fight is not going to happen. Doesn’t Tim’s Mgr run want ever M-1 Global is call now? And didn’t they just release Fedor? And did’t they just sign Tim to fight that IFL kid Ben Rothwell? So now they are going to let their best fighter fight the guy that just quit on them? And let Mark Cuban make all the money? Does that make sence you anyone? They could have waited 2 week and made this fight for themselfs

  • brandon says:

Tim Sylvia is the best challenger for Fedor right now. Love or hate the guy he is a tough guy to face. But he also does very poorly against top JJ guys. And Fedor’s Sambo is just as good as any black belt in BJJ. I think Fedor will continue the armbar trend and beat Sylvia.

  • Mike says:

    It’s official, July 19th.
I would like to see Tim win this but if he wins where does that leave Fedor vs Couture? That fight would have been the 2 best HW’s fighting for the #1 world ranking, If Tim beats Fedor than whats the point?

  • sgtrocknroll says:

This is the master plan from Dana. Tim wins and comes back to the UFC and suddenly Couture is nothing!…Mark my words….hooah!

  • MikeB says:

Affliction didn’t sign Sylvia to fight Rothwell; they just happened to sign both of them at the same time. I don’t really see how one can call Fedor a ****. Is it because he hasn’t faced top level competition in 3 years? What about the 27 guys he pounded the **** out of 3 years ago, including Big Nog (current UFC interim champ) twice? Not to mention Fujita, Filipovic, Herring, Randleman, Hunt, Coleman etc. I guarantee Fedor comes back even stronger than before and dispels the idiots who call him a p****.

  • Eddyr92806 says:

Mike nothing is official with fedor till i see him in the ring. I read the thing on sherdog.com and looks like fedor is using Cuban to get more money from Dana

  • Dirty says:

I’m sure thats bothering Randy Couture ! I’m sure he’s so anxious to fight Fedor ! If Tim beats him then Coutures dream match doesn’t really become much anymore. Good for Tim, I don’t like him but Randy jumped on the occasion to take the UFC title from him. Tim is jumping on this one ! Good for him !

  • kelvin says:

never seen one of fedor’s fight, but i can’t stand tim. then again at this point, i can’t stand randy either. no 1 fighter is bigger than the sport of mma.

having said that i hope tim loses so he’ll look like even more of an idiot for leaving the UFC.

  • scotchydow says:

    kelvin-
How can you be a fan of MMA without seeing Fedor fight????? Watch the Kevin Randelman/Fedor fight. By the way……. Couture,Fedor, even Sylvia aren’t trying to be bigger than the sport. They are trying to do what ALL FIGHTERS (and most fans such as myself) want-crown 1 true champ.
    Brandon-
The best fight for Fedor is Barnett or Couture. Sylvia is about to have the steel rod in his arm wrapped around his own neck (sorry FixXer) I say the top three heavyweights in the world are Fedor, Randy, and Josh Barnett- and they need to face each other.

  • FixXeR says:

basically everyone that has talked all sorts of crap about Tim…they need to realize that Tim is a tough mofo. GIVE THE MAN RESPECT! He wanted this fight….trust me. This is the reason he left the UFC. Randy and Fedor are both being ****es and the organizations are the ones being blamed for it. TIM DID EVERYTHING RIGHT! He wanted this fight, left the UFC, and he got the fight. Fedor doesnt want to fight Randy….thats all there is to it, and I question whether or not Randy really wants to fight him. If they both wanted it, it would have happend already.

That being said…..a lot of people dont like Fedor and dont like Sylvia….but I guarantee there will be a lot of Sylvia bandwagon jumpers. I am not saying Fedor sucks at all….and to be honest with you, I think Fedor will probably win…but not as easily as you think scotchy ;) . Just give the man RESPECT….he is a fighter and he wants to fight the best… and YOU CANT SAY THAT ABOUT A LOT OF FIGHTERS!

  • segablack says:

Tim Sylvia will and i guarantee Lose this fight! and just as easily as he did to Randy. Fador is the real deal when it comes to the sport of MMA his record speaks for itself a professional record of 28 wins, one loss, and one no contest its that and the fact hes gone 24 straight. and the fact that tim has not looked good in the last year lossing 2 out of three 3 fight this year does not seem like a wise bet to me that he’s coming out of this fight with the win.

  • Ben says:

fedor wins via armbar round #1

  • kelvin says:

    scotchy,

just started following ufc closely in late ‘05. lately been wacthing wec every now and then, but fedor’s never fought in the ufc and i haven’t ever seen pride…just heard that fedor’s a beast. hell, i’m not gonna fake being a fedor fan when i never seen him fight, i just really don’t like the maine-i-fag! just being honest chief.

  • Thumper says:

Quoting MMA fights from 3 years ago is like talking about a 3 year old laptop. MMA has been constantly evolving and still is; what a fighter did in the ring 3 years ago is pretty much meaning less; you have to look at the recent activity. The fighters last six fights, if they occurred in the last 18-24 months at most.

  • FixXeR says:

i disagree thumper……chuck knocking out randy twice will always be in the back of my head when i see him fight

  • Eddyr92806 says:

Yes i would rather see Chuck v Fedor than Randy V Fedor

  • JAI says:

So I take it Sylvia has left the UFC??????

Fedor-vs-Courture is a much higher profile fight, but it’s still a big fight. Sylvia is no push over and will give fedor fits in this fight. If fedor isn’t careful and if he can’t get inside on Sylvia, he could definitely get knocked out or seriously battered by Sylvia the way “the Snowman” did. Of course I hope Fedor wins and does it impressively, as he is one of my favorite fighters.

  • M3 says:

I dont know about saying that it does not matter what a fighter has done in his past because all fighters are held by a permanent record that is there to show who the best fighters are! thats why we use it to judge them accordingly. but i also agree that you do have a good point in saying that he has not done much since his last good opponent Mark Hunt in 2006 but he has nothing against him that no one can really prove otherwise just personal opinion’s and thats all. because no matter what anyone thinks this man has NEVER been knock-out, submitted or lost a fight in 8 years hes going to be the best till proven otherwise. and the only why anyone can prove it is till he loses.

  • eddyr92806 says:

Not if he fights cans for 2 years…

  • Thumper says:

    FixXeR says:

i disagree thumper……chuck knocking out randy twice will always be in the back of my head when i see him fight

But when those knockouts start being 3-4 years in the past you can’t really use them as factors in a ranking system anymore, there has been too much time past. You still get the cred for the knockouts but their importance starts to fade.
