HDNet To Air Couture-Angle Submission Wrestling Match

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Mar 29, 2008 at 2:00 pm ET13 Comments

HDNet will reportedly air the rumored submission wrestling match between Randy Couture and Kurt Angle, according to MMA Junkie.

Both Couture and Angle are highly accomplished grapplers, though Couture clearly has much more recent experience between his UFC competition, and regular training at his Xtreme Couture facilities. Before embarking on mixed martial arts, Couture was a three time Olympic alternate for the United States Greco-Roman wrestling team, as well as a three time NCAA Division I All American. In 2006, Couture also competed in a submission wrestling match against world class grappler Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. The match ended in a draw.

Kurt Angle was a decorated freestyle wrestler before entering the world of professional or “entertainment” wrestling, taking home a gold medal at the World Championships in 1995, and another at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta,GA. Angle was also a two time NCAA Division I champion, and a three time NCAA Division I All American.

Angle has talked about a conversion to mixed martial arts several times in the past, but recently admitted that, at 39 years old, he has missed his opportunity to switch to MMA and would instead like to try his hand at submission grappling.

The match between Couture and Angle could take place during the summer of 2008, but nothing is close to being official at this time. I suppose it’s nice to know that if this match indeed comes to light someday, we will at least be able to catch it in high definition. After all, this proposed submission wrestling bout might be the only competition Randy Couture sees for a long, long time.

there is a gonna be a big martial arts expo on July 11th, 2008 in Anaheim California…..Randy is affiliated with this expo so that may be the site of the Angle Couture match.

I hope angle beats him…but i don’t know?…angle was know for schooling brock back stage…but who know who would win…remmber guys shoot wrestling (submission wrestling) and show wrestling (pro wrestling) are not that diffent…Pancrase was started by pro wrestlers and people like ken shamrock and Sakuraba were all pro wrestler before they were fighter…so i think Kurt has a 60% chance of winning

  • johnboy says:

i no angel is a very good wrestler i mean the guy has a gold medal to prove it but i can help think that if he beat randy it would be embarrasing for the mma world any thoughts on that people

  • Thumper says:

You would have to give the advantage to Angle in this format as he is an experienced wresteler, or maybe not as submission or ‘Catch’ wrestling is quite different from Greco Roman. By the way Eddy, it is nothing like pro wrestling.
Greco Roman wrestling does not allow holds below the waist so advantage Randy; no ground and pound, advantage Angle.

  • E-ROC says:

If Angle didn’t break his neck several times, I think he would’ve been a great MMA fighter.

Angle vs Couture in a submission wrestling match is something that I’ll watch. I think Couture will win, but Angle will give him a run for his money.

  • ptran says:

Does anyone really care about this?

  • dan says:

Jacare couldn’t submit Randy, what chance would Angle have, he may be a great wrestler, but wrestling does nothing more in submission fighting than allow you to work positions real well. Randy has been training in submission fighting for quite a long time now and has quite a bit of experience, all Angle would be able to do is hold him down, if that.

I agree. Except, you know, for the part where no Greco-Roman favors Randy, since Randy was the Greco-Roman wrestler and Kurt was a freestyle wrestler…

So yeah, I disagree. Although I also don’t care.

  • theMAN says:

i hope randy kicks angles ass, angle is such a dick. wat a frickin punk…

  • JAI says:

Yeah, I’ll watch it as well. Should be very interesting being that both guys are very highly skilled wrestlers. With the striking taken out of the equation, I think I give Angle the advantage.

  • dee says:

Randy better be very careful, with his brittle bones.

  • Eric says:

Yeah, the sad thing is that people will say Angel beat a champion MMA fighter if he wins…and omit that it wasn’t in an MMA fight!

They might as well have a rock, paper, scissors PPV match in my opinion. The match is still in the fighting genre but it still doesn’t prove anything. Also, how big is it of Angel to say that he missed the boat on MMA because of his age…but his opponent for this thing is Randy?!

It’s a shame that all this UFC mess prevents Randy from actually fighting Angel…if Angel would even fight him in the first place.

  • Eric says:

    Angle I meant….damn. <-)
