Tim Sylvia May Leave The UFC

Posted by Kris Karkoski on Mar 27, 2008 at 8:29 pm ET22 Comments

From The Fight Network:

Two-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia could announce his decision to leave the Las Vegas-based promotion as early as Friday, according to a source close to the situation. Sylvia, who has one fight remaining on his current contract with the UFC, submitted to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in a bout for the interim heavyweight championship at UFC 81 in February. The source indicated that Sylvia’s exit was not yet a done deal and left the door open to the possibility of his staying with the UFC.

Yesterday Sylvia promised that a “big announcement” would be made on Friday and this would certainly fit the bill. “The Maine-iac” will be a guest on tomorrow’s edition of “Inside MMA” on HDNet where he is expected to make the announcement, whatever it may be.

Thanks for the good fights Tim, but now, sorry to say, it’s “GOOD RIDANCE”. You were a champion in a time that was just too easy to be Heavyweight Champ in the UFC. Hopefully you will dominate at another promotion, and I have an idea of where (watch out Kimbo, I think Tim can take you) but your game is no good at this level anymore. We will all still see you fight still.

  • Jason N. says:

that makes sense…..bc kimbo needs an opponent.. so that would be a big announcement and would be cool to see…..

  • Napoa says:

he is defintily leaving, like what other anouncment could it be, and i don’t really care he is a good but very boring fighter

god riddence tim i will still keep an eye on you tough

  • Joe says:

Couldn’t have put it better. I liked Tim but in such a high level of competition (It has grown over the past couple of years.) But it’s time to go it’s time to go.

  • rivera says:

About damn time!!! I hope this scooter riding, turkey hunting, Hughes nut-hugger finds his way to Elite where he could take on other freakshows . . . Kimbo anyone?? The Hill-Billy against the Thug?? Could make for a good show.

As far as having to make an announcement, nobody gives a rat’s ass if he’s leaving. He got man-handled by one of the most over-rated HWs in Randy and then blames it on his back problem. What a weenie!

By leaving the UFC maybe he can get a fresh start where people don’t already know that he **** in his pants courtesty of Assuerio Silva, got his arm broken by Frank Mir, or just that he’s a boring fighter.

    War Fedor!!!!

  • lee says:

people should back off about tim he steps up every time against the best in the world. tim is pissed that lesner is getting paid more than him and who can blame him lesner is a toy fighter, to quote mr T, LESNER IS JUST A PAPER CHAMPION HE IS NOT A REAL MAN HE JUST FIGHTS HIM SELF

  • aaxer says:

    Agreed he
Is a boring fighter with no one left to lose to. He beat Arlovski twice pretty much playing defense then throwing punches when arlovski would get too close he fought to not lose instead of fighting to win

  • ihatedana says:

    Hopefully he’s fighting Fedor.

More likely he’s gonna announce that he re-signed and will fight Kongo next.

  • Brandon says:

Ok so I hate Tim Syvlia with a burning passion but he was DESTROYING Nog before that guilotine. And I really think in a rematch he would beat Nog. possibly TKO him. Any the only other fighter that may pose a threat to Tim left in the UFC is Brock Lesnar or Heath Herring. MAYBE Chiek Kongo. But any of those could easily go Tim Sylvia’s way. I actually see Brock being his worst opponent. He really can’t handle a world class wrestler with power to put him down. So now the HW Division is even weaker again. No Randy and No Tim means for really weird HW fights that don’t really prove that the champion of the UFC is the best fighter in the world.

  • belly says:

i get that nobody thinks tim is that good to watch.but i dont see how this can be good news to see another hw leave. i would rather he re signs as i still think he has something to offer the ufc.

  • kelvin says:

don’t really care whether he stays or goes, he’s a boring fighter. ever since he got the belt, his fights became so boring. the only exciting fight he was in was when he got pummeled by Randy.

  • HAWAII says:

big tim vs big kimbo thats a big scrap

  • jpm says:

I hope he goes elsewhere, soooooo many boring fights, over here in the uk the ufc & cage rage(which is ****e) are the only mma events which get televised so hopefully i’ll never get to see big tim fight again.

  • Genki says:

kimbo?? there’s no way he would take the fight…kimbo is a smart dude who knows he has to build his skills and not just jump into the water…people aren’t really thinking about Fedor! fedor just left M1 global, sylvia’s manager running the now defunct M1 into a new promotion…i think its gonna be sylvia vs fedor

  • Eddyr92806 says:

This guy is almost a bad to watch as sherk…after he got off roids he became slow and flabby…i hope he ends up in king of the cage and is head lining a bill in a Indian Casino

  • Ben says:

Lesnar is getting paid more because of the amount of hype he brings with him. Unless he puts up some wins his payments will go down after this contract expires. Tim was GREAT…until he got off the roids. He has become a boring fighter and has very few impressive victories in the Octagon. Tim’s prime is over due to fighters who can take his punches and who can get him on the ground. He beat Monson mainly due to the massive size difference, other than that he hasn’t beat a guy who looks to go to the groun (Arlovski wanted to keep it standing). Let’s look to the future…Mir vs. Nogueira for the belt

  • MMAN says:

Tim’s fighting style is safe and boring at times but he has really never recieved the credit he deserves. Regardless of what everyone is saying about him; he has an excellant record fighting against the best the UFC had to offer at that time. People talk trash about him because his image is not that of which the fans accept as a HW Champ. He is in the Top 5 of all HW’s in all of MMA.

I don’t personally like him but his talent in the UFC shouldnt be disputed.

  • FixXeR says:

Tim Sylvia is a tough dude and is in the top 5 in heavyweights…thats all there is to it. He was destroying Nog until he got caught. THe only fighter he did not destroy or put up a good match at all against was Randy…other than that, he has not gone down easily when he has lost. People hate him and I dunno why, but he is a contender and will always be. He is #2 in the HW division in the UFC.

  • JAI says:

I Dana alwasy says he’s not worried about these other MMA Promotions and that they’re just “jokes” and what not. Well, the reason that they’ve been jokes, because they haven’t really had big name fighters on the promotion to valid themselves, or to make a serious pool of competition for the title holders. Well if big name fighters keep bailing out of the UFC that will all change super fast! With the possibility of Tito leaving and now Sylvia, not to mention Couture and a slew of others that are at the end of their contracts, this gives other promotions the opportunity to really beef up there rosters, competition levels and help bring respect to there promotion.

Dana and the ufc had better be careful!

  • zac says:

Tim Sylvia avoids combat, and his fights contribute to an unecessary 1/6th of my $45 PPV fee being wasted (less if we get to see some prelims).
I dont know why so many people are defending him. His size made him difficult to deal with…thats it. If hes a few inches shorter, hes fighting in IFL. The only way he’s top 5 is if there are only 5 HWs being considered.

I’m glad someone mentioned that he blamed his “injury” after he lost to Randy. Tim is a disgrace to MMA. Whoever picks him up should add a contract stipulation that all Sylvia fights are subject to the old Pride yellow-card rule. They would be able to pay him in spare-change.

  • The boss says:

All this coming from guys who paid to see his main events, just like they’ve put down Tito they paid to see his main events. They also would still pay to see either fighter in a main event, whether to see them win or lose. You still wanted to see. By the way fighting to win, and fighting not to lose are the same thing. By the way eddyr92806 sucks like a whore in a crack house.

  • Eddyr92806 says:

that was almost witty the boss…good try keep work on it and one day you may be funny ;-)
